UKIAH, Calif. – A little over a year ago, when Mike Mari, director of Student Life and Athletics, was asked what he needed to help students succeed at Mendocino College, he quickly replied “A way to quickly communicate with a large number of our student body.”
That discussion led to the purchase of text messaging software. The cost was $2,400, which was funded by the Mendocino College Foundation and the Associated Students of Mendocino College (ASMC).
This new and innovative tool is used to keep students informed about campus events and important reminders about the college.
During a typical week, a student who has voluntarily opted into the program could receive anywhere from three to 10 messages. Messages vary from enrollment and financial aid deadlines to campus activities and events.
The other benefit of the program is that by receiving text messages about their college, students feel more connected to campus activities and are more informed.
According to Mari, many students have said that being informed about activities and events taking place around campus, and particularly in the newly opened Student Center and Library Learning Center Building, makes them realize they are on a real college campus.
The text messages just add to their feelings of belonging to a community within the college.
For the past two semesters, Schat’s Bakeries and Café has generously provided over 50 gift cards as an incentive to get more students to enroll in the text messaging system.
At least once a week students receive a text message which simply states “The first person to show this text to Mike Mari will win a free $10 gift card to Schat’s.” Mari chooses a variety of locations on campus for students to search him out to win the gift card.
The college is incredibly grateful to Schat’s Bakeries and Café for generously supporting the program and doing their part to keep students in school and feeling connected to both their college and community.
For more information about the texting program, Mike Mari can be reached at 707-468-3165 or email

Happy third week of school, Carlé!
This article will discuss some of the goings on around the school.
I interviewed Mr. Wickersham, our new vice principal, on Friday, Aug. 23.
Where did he come from and where did he go to school? He came from Santa Cruz, Calif., and went to school in Berkeley.
He likes the fact that Carlé is small. He likes that our school has more of a family community feeling than a normal high school.
What does he like to do? He likes to play music. He likes rock music. He plays the bass guitar. How old is he? He is 46.
What he thinks would be interesting to the students about himself: He spent a summer working on boats in Alaska. He started a record label. He has traveled the United States with his bands 15 times. He used to skateboard when he was 15. He grew up with a lot of professional skateboarders and surfers.
What kind of sports he likes: He likes the San Francisco Giants, which is a baseball team. His favorite football team is the Oakland Raiders. His favorite basketball team is the Golden State Warriors.
His plans for the future are to work at Carlé High School and to make sure we have the best school in the district. He likes Carlé just as much as Lower Lake High School.
He wants to see students more involved in the community.
Class schedules will be changing this week as the three-week thematic ended on Friday, Aug. 30. Students will receive their progress reports on Tuesday, Sept. 3.
Picture day was Aug. 26. Saul Castaneda, the photographer, took all the Carlé students’ and staff’s pictures.
On Aug. 27, Michael and Starr Skidmore visited Carlé to hold a paintball club meeting. Paintball club’s president is Sienna Norton. The first game will be held on a weekend shortly.
Student of the week this week was Lucas Stickel. Lucas will be the first graduate from Carlé this year.
Carlé would like to welcome new student Desteny Cypert!

Welcome back, Carlé!
Timothy Mcguire and Kasandra Colwell, are writing the Carlé Chronicle this year.
In this week’s Carlé Chronicle, I am going to discuss the beginning of the school year, new students, last year’s sixth grading period’s perfect attendance winner and gold and silver level students, student of the week, upcoming events, and changes to the school.
First I am going to discuss the students who were awarded gold and silver level before summer break.
Gold level students include Kasandra Colwell, Timothy Mcguire, Alyssa Peterson, Roxie Purdum-White and Lucas Stickel.
Silver level students include Aaron Beecher, Jacob Davis, Emilio Gonzales, Jeramy Isom, Kobi Minard, Sienna Norton, Nathaniel Oakley, Dane Pearson, Esparanza Roberts, Chelsea Schloesser, Chenoa Schmidt, Andrew Subjack, Sarah Terry and Lance Thurston.
Congratulations gold and silver level students!
The perfect attendance for last grading period was awarded to Kasandra Colwell.
This school year Carlé is welcoming a selection of new students. These new students are Kelly Alvarez, Gage Beck, Kevin Fisher, Doug Chambless, Cory Gardner, Alyssa Garnett, Savanna Golden, Jeremy Hunter, George King-Walker, Troy Lamburth, Kobi Mathies, Jazmine Mcgee, Fred Miller, Melyssa Moreno, DeAndre Morris, Brittany Parenteau-Larsen, Isaiah Piazza, Ernesto Rodriguez, Daniel Salvante, Isaac Soto, Roman Suarez, Janessa Teixeira, Monica Troche, Blake Von Rekowski, Charles Warren, Amaree Whiley, Yasmine Wilcox and Alvin Wilder.
Welcome to Carlé and we hope you all love it here!
Not only are there new students, there is also new staff.
We have a new morning server named Gail and Mr. Wickersham is now our vice principal.
To help welcome Mr. Wickersham and Gail, plaques were made for them. Sabrina Farnan made a plaque for our new vice principal and Lance Thurston made one for Gail. Welcome to the Carlé family, we hope you feel at home!
On the subject of students: I’m now going to announce student of the week for our first week back at school. Congratulations Sabrina Farnan! Keep up the good work!
Sabrina was also this week’s Chily winner. She chose a stuffed puppy in a tall mug; which she gave to the school’s one on one para Guein Bouscal, who does that and so much more for our school.
Due to changes in schedule in the district, Carlé no longer has an afternoon bus. No need to fear, though! If you have no way home, Carlé can provide Lake Transit bus passes to you. All that you need to do to get these passes is fill out a simple form from the office and give it to Barbara in the office.
If you want to show off your new school to your parents and siblings, show up to open house on Sept. 26.
