Carlé Chronicle: Updates on testing, school events

It is almost halfway through the second grading period here at Carlé, and there are many exciting things for the Carlé Chronicle readers to catch up on.

This includes good wishes for those who took the CAHSEE, dental screening, progress reports, back to school night, cup contest, Pat’s birthday, Wickersham’s free throw challenge, announcing people who earned perfect attendance, student of the week, and the CHILY winner.

The California High School Exit Exam was given Oct. 1. To those who took it, the Carlé Chronicle hopes you all did well.

Dental screenings were given on the same day to make sure Carlé’s students are taking care of their teeth. Thank you to Marta Fuller and Mari Valdez for taking the time to come to Carlé.

Due to the fact that we are almost halfway through the grading period, progress reports will come out soon to give you an idea on how productive you’ve been so far.

Back to school night was on Sept. 26 and the turnout was considerably better than years past. What a dedicated bunch of students we have this year! Back to school night was also a potluck: everybody brought either homemade food or some food they bought on the way.

There is a mug contest going on here at Carlé currently, the deadline for making a cup is Oct. 18. Students get to design their own cup, somehow incorporating Carlé into the design.

Students who have made cups so far include Roxie Purdum-White, Lance Thurston, Sabrina Farnan, Sarah Terry, Chris Stutz, Lukas Carlson with more coming in every day.

Recently it was our paraprofessional Pat’s birthday. She is a phenomenal aid in many subjects including algebra, the Carlé Chronicle just wanted to make note, wish her a happy birthday, and thank her for all she does to help us.

Students Sabrina Farnan and Marla Mitchell put together a handmade birthday card that the rest of the student body signed.

Vice Principal Mr. Wickersham, maintenance worker Gary Oakes, and teachers Alan Siegel and Dan Maes held a freethrow challenge during lunch at the basketball court. Students got a prize for successful freethrows.

Last grading period, 21 students achieved gold level. Timmy announced those students last week, I just wanted to comment on what a great turnout of gold level students that is and congratulate them.

We also got a great turn out of people who earned perfect attendance! Those people are: Kelly Alvarez, Lukas Carlson, Kasandra Colwell, Kevin Fisher, Cody Hoss, Jeremy Hunter, Kobie Mathies, Timothy McGuire, Malinda Mitchell, DeAndre Morris, Lance Thurston, Blake Von Rekowski, and Amaree Whiley. Due to all this success the student council is holding a barbecue during lunch next week. More info to come on this reward activity.

The CHILY winner this week was Blake Von Rekowski, who claimed a camouflage fleece blanket as his prize.

The student of the week was DeAndre Morris. Enjoy your front of the lunch line pass, free pizza from DJ’s pizza, and your free item from the school business.

Once again, The Carlé Chronicle would like to thank DJ’s pizza for making one of these prizes available to us.

This generous local business has shown kindness to every one of our student of the week’s during the last many years. We truly appreciate this act of kindness.

Gov. Brown signs education legislation

SACRAMENTO – Gov. Edmund G. Brown Jr. on Wednesday signed a package of bills to help improve education in California and continue transitioning to Common Core State Standards.

The governor’s 2013-14 Budget, signed in June, invests $1.25 billion in professional development, instructional materials and technology to support the implementation of Common Core Standards in California.

Wednesday’s action also builds on the historic school funding reforms signed into law by Gov. Brown in July.

The legislation – called the Local Control Funding Formula (LCFF) – replaces California’s overly complex, inefficient and inequitable finance system for K-12 schools and directs additional resources to the state’s neediest students, while restoring local control over how money is spent on schools.

The governor signed the following bills Wednesday:

AB 56 by Assemblymember Shirley N. Weber (D-San Diego) – Requires, by July 1, 2015, the State Fire Marshal to propose for adoption by the California Building Standards Commission, for the commission's next triennial code adoption cycle, appropriate standards for the installation of carbon monoxide devices in school buildings.

AB 123 by Assemblymember Rob Bonta (D-Alameda) – Requires the State Board of Education to ensure that the state curriculum and framework on César Chávez and the history of the farm labor movement in the United States, and the state criteria for selecting textbooks, include information on the role of immigrants, including Filipino Americans, in that movement.

AB 182 by Assemblymember Joan Buchanan (D-Alamo) – Establishes parameters for the issuance of local education bonds that allow for the compounding of interest, including, but not limited to, capital appreciation bonds (CABs) and requires local governing boards to be provided additional information regarding the issuance of CABs and Current Interest Bond that are issued for a period over 30 years.

AB 308 by Assemblymember Curt C. Hagman (R-Chino Hills) – Requires a school district, county office of education or charter school to reimburse the state for any state bond funding received for a building if that building is subsequently sold and the proceeds used for ongoing general fund purposes. Limited to property that was purchased, modernized or constructed within 10 years of the sale.

AB 424 by Assemblymember Tim M. Donnelly (R-Twin Peaks) – Requires the Instructional Quality Commission, when revising the history-social science framework, to consider incorporating the Magna Carta, the Articles of Confederation, and the California Constitution into the framework.

AB 484 by Assemblymember Susan Bonilla (D-Concord) – Establishes the Measurement of Academic Performance and Progress, commencing with the 2013-14 school year, as the statewide assessment program, aligned with the common core state standards, and provides for a rational transition from the existing statewide assessment system to the new system. In addition, the bill provides direction to the State Board of Education, the Superintendent of Public Instruction and the California Department of Education on the administration and future expansion of the Measurement of Academic Performance and Progress to ensure a comprehensive assessment system that best meets the needs of teachers, students, and parents.

AB 700 by Assemblymember Jimmy Gomez (D-Los Angeles) – Requires the Instructional Quality Commission, when revising the history-social science framework, to ensure that voter education information is included in the American government and civics curriculum at the high school level.

SB 201 by Sen. Carol Liu (D-La Canada Flintridge) – Authorizes the State Board of Education to adopt K-8 instructional materials that are aligned to the Common Core English language arts standards and the Common Core development standards.

SB 247 by Sen. Carol Liu (D-La Canada Flintridge) – Addresses the use of grade 2 diagnostic assessments for use by classroom teachers in the absence of state-required testing of grade 2 pupils.

SB 300 by Sen. Loni Hancock (D-Berkeley) – Requires the State Board of Education, on or before January 31, 2016, to consider the adoption of a revised curriculum framework and evaluation criteria for the Next Generation Science Standards.

SB 330 by Sen. Alex Padilla (D-Pacoima) – Requires the Instructional Quality Commission to consider developing and recommending to the State Board of Education a distinct category on mental health instruction to educate pupils about all aspects of mental health, when the Health Framework for Public Schools is next revised.

SB 490 by Sen. Hannah-Beth Jackson (D-Santa Barbara) – Encourages California community college districts that participate in the Early Assessment Program to consult with the Academic Senate of the California Community Colleges to work toward sequencing their pre-collegiate and transfer level English and math courses to the common core academic content standards.

SB 552 by Sen. Ronald S. Calderon (D-Montebello) – Permits local school district governing boards to provide instruction in grades 1 through 12 on violence awareness, as specified.

Carlé Chronicle: Students take ASVAB, Student Council and Interact plan events

Welcome to the second grade period, Carlé!

Several students took the ASVAB test. ASVAB stands for Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery. The ASVAB is a series of questions that can help you make a good career choice. Carlé is proud to be able to offer this to its students each year.

Students who took the ASVAB were Melyssa Moreno, Cody Perdock, Malia Askew, Marisa Gilbert, Sienna Norton, Lance Thurston, Blake Von Rekowski, Alvin Wilder, Isaac Soto, Craig Stephens, Yasmine Wilcox, Jeremy Hunter and Dane Pearson.

Carlé has had a record number of gold level students this grading period. Twenty-one gold level students got their gold level cards.

Gold level students for the first grade period were Kelly Alvarez, Jay Brown, Lukas Carlson, Kasandra Colwell, Shelby England, Kevin Fisher, Savanna Golden, Jeremy Hunter, Jonathan Lansdowne, Jasmine Mcgee, Timothy Mcguire, Deandre Morris, Dane Pearson, Cody Perdock, Alyssa Peterson, Daniel Salvante, Chenoa Schmidt, Christopher Stutz, Blake Von Rekowski, Amaree Whiley and Alvin Wilder.

Silver level students were Ty Ty Beasley, Gage Beck, Nathan Frigge, Alyssa Garnett, Summer Gunn, Cody Hoss, Troy Lamburth, Michael Lanigan, Jessie Mason, Kobi Mathies, Marla Mitchell, Sienna Norton, Nathan Oakley, Isaiah Piazza, Esperanza Roberts, Steven Tracy, and Yasmine Wilcox.

Student Council: Carlé High School will be having a barbecue on Monday, Oct. 7. Student Council members will decide what activities they want like football, baseball or ping pong.

Advisors will give students a survey to see what kind of music students would like to hear at the barbecue. The Student Council will have a See’s Candy fundraiser.

Student of the week was Jonathan Lansdowne. He came back to school this year with a fire to graduate and has been a real asset to our community.

Interact Club: The club is working on getting the plants in the garden for the safe house. Members of the club will be doing cleaning and landscaping at the safe house. Both of these events will take place in October.

Upcoming events for Interact Club: In November the Interact Club will have lunch with the Rotary Club. On Dec. 14, the Interact Club will have its annual Christmas Dinner. On Feb. 21, 2014, the members will set up tables for the annual seafood boil, which takes place the following day.

Angie Siegel, the science teacher, and Dr. Burger, the school principal, went to a workshop on Monday, Sept. 23. The workshop was called “Restorative Practices.” The workshop is about looking at ideas for discipline other than suspension.

Groups to offer seaplane history display

LAKEPORT, Calif. – A display of seaplane history will be available during the Clearlake Splash-in this weekend.

In concert with the Children's Museum of Arts and Science, Lake County Airmen's Association officers Rick and Dee Dee Long have on display an extensive display of art depicting the history of seaplanes dating back to the 1930s.

Additionally, the Children's Museum of Arts and Science local Rocket Club with club advisor Bill Bordisso will have their rockets and support equipment on display at the exhibit.

The hours of the exhibit are from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday and 9 a.m. to noon Sunday.

The public is welcome to attend this exhibit without charge and to encourage the young rocket scientists to further their quest for the perfect launch.

The location of the exhibit is in the Lincoln-Leavitt Insurance building 650 N. Main, Lakeport, adjacent to the Natural High School where the seaplanes are on display throughout this weekend.
