LAKE COUNTY, Calif. – The Lake County Office of Education will offer two August workshops for those who need to improve their skills in math, reading and writing.

The workshops will be offered from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 10, and Saturday, Aug. 17, at the Clearlake Community School, 6945 Old Highway 53 in Clearlake.

The cost of the one day workshop is $50 and includes enrollment in the computer lab for the remainder of the month of August.

The workshops are open to all adults and high school students.

Space is limited to 15 students per workshop. To allow for maximum participation, community members are asked to only attend one of the dates.

Registration papers are available at the Clearlake Community School, Lake County Office of Education and at www.lakecoe.org .

Whether you need to improve your skills for an upcoming test like the GED, ACCUPLACER and SAT or you just need to improve your basic skills for employment, the workshops will assess your strengths and develop a plan to improve your weaknesses.

Students will take a preassessment that fits their need, learn test taking strategies, develop an individual plan of action for improving their score and receive a month of full access to the computer lab in Clearlake.

Exams such as the GED will be changing come January 2014. Students who have already begun by taking a portion of the battery must complete the process by the end of December or their scores will become invalid.

These workshops will allow students such as those currently attempting the GED to access the information needed to be successful. Regardless of what exam or job you are preparing for, there are resources to help.

This event is hosted by the Career Technical Education and College Going-Initiative Department of the Lake County Office of Education.

For more information or to register please call Kim Boles-Cravea at 707-350-5985 or Tammy Serpa at 707-995-9523, Extension 407.

LAKE COUNTY, Calif. – The Clear Lake Trowel & Trellis Garden Club has awarded former Middletown High School student Lindee Jones a second $1000 scholarship

Last year the club also awarded Jones its annual $1000 scholarship for a student who desires to further their education in the horticultural or agricultural fields.

Jones, who graduated from Middletown High School in 2012, attended Shasta Community College this past year.

During her high school years she was very active in Lake County FFA, 4-H, and High School Rodeo, as well as putting more than 100 hours of her time into community service activities.

She intends to complete her AA degree in environmental horticulture at Shasta Community College and is also taking classes to prepare her for the pest control advisor exam.

As part of Jones’ scholarship application to the CLT&TGC, Leimone Waite, a horticultural instructor at Shasta Community College, wrote, “Lindee lives in our farm dorms and is assigned as the student worker to our Horticulture Program’s five greenhouses. She is responsible for the watering and care of the greenhouse plants. Lindee … is always willing to pitch in and participate in the many activities we hold on our college farm. She is a welcome addition to our Horticulture Department and I recommend her highly.”

The CLT&TGC members raise funds for their yearly $1000 scholarship award by making beautiful holiday wreaths out of local, fresh foliage.

“We are thrilled to again award this scholarship to such a hard working and competent young leader,” said club President Carol Dobusch.

The Clear Lake Trowel & Trellis Garden Club welcomes new members and more information can be found on their website, www.clttgc.org .

The club meets on the third Tuesday of every month (except July and August) for a lunch and garden-based program at noon at the Scott’s Valley Women’s Clubhouse, 2298 Hendricks Road, Lakeport.

CLT&TGC is a member of Mendo-Lake District, California Garden Club Inc., Pacific Region and National Garden Clubs Inc.

LAKEPORT, Calif. – The Lake County Chapter of California Women for Agriculture (LCCWA) is offering Lake County classrooms the opportunity to apply for mini-grants to fund agriculture-related educational projects.

All Lake County classrooms from kindergarten through eighth grade are eligible to apply; projects must have an agriculture-focus.

“Our chapter is very excited to be in a position to offer these mini-grants to our community’s classrooms,” LCCWA President Annette Hopkins said. “Kids often have no idea where their food or clothing comes from. We hope that these grants will provide the spark that will enable our community’s classrooms to show local kids how important agriculture is in their daily life.”

LCCWA incoming president, Sharron Zoller, added, “So far this year, we’ve awarded mini-grants to the Kelseyville Kids Garden Club, the Mt. Vista Middle School Garden Project and the Cobb Mountain Elementary School Garden Club. We want to get the word out about this opportunity for the 2013-14 school year.”

The mini-grant application can be found at the chapter's Web site, www.lakecountycwa.org , under the “scholarship” tab.

LAKE COUNTY, Calif. – Nura Brown, a recent graduate of Carlé High School in Lower Lake, was the recipient of the 2013 Frank Meisenbach Scholarship.

Brown received the scholarship award last week and will use the funds to further her education at Yuba College this fall.

She plans to pursue a course of study with an emphasis on water resources.

The scholarship presentation was made by Charlotte Griswold, president of the board of directors of the East Lake Resource Conservation District (ELRCD), Board member Victoria Brandon and Lois Meisenbach.

The East Lake RCD established the scholarship in 2012 in memory of Frank Meisenbach, a long-term Board member in the district, community leader and farmer.

Meisenbach had a special interest and passion for educating youth about the natural resources of Lake County. This scholarship will continue that legacy.

Community members from throughout the county have stepped forward to fund the scholarship that will be awarded each year to deserving students who have an interest in natural resources, agriculture, environmental sciences or a related field.

Meisenbach had made a commitment to educate the community about the importance of agriculture and natural resources within the county, and he believed the best way to educate the community was to start with children and young adults.

The East Lake RCD hopes to continue Meisenbach's vision and mission through this scholarship. He was a true believer in the power of education to create local heroes who will sustain a healthy environment for all citizens. Nura Brown is one of those heroes.

Individuals and organizations wishing to contribute to the Frank Meisenbach Scholarship Fund can contact the East Lake RCD at 707-263-4180.
