Assemblyman Dodd takes aim at closing gender pay gap in California

NORTHERN CALIFORNIA – Assemblyman Bill Dodd (D-Napa) on Monday introduced legislation requiring companies that do business with the state of California to provide the state with data on employee income by gender and race.

With the introduction of Assembly Bill 1354, Dodd is taking an important step towards gender pay equity in California.

“While California is often a driving force for social change, one area that has been greatly overlooked has been the promotion of equal pay for women,” Dodd said. “Income inequality is not a problem anybody should have to bear, and AB 1354 begins to address this challenge.”

Dodd was joined in introducing the bill by co-authors Senators Lois Wolk, Holly Mitchell, Connie Leyva, Loni Hancock and Cathleen Galgiani, and Assemblymembers Susan Bonilla, Lorena Gonzalez, Susan Talamantes Eggman, Rob Bonta, Rocky Chavez and Patty Lopez.

Over the last decade, full-time working women in the U.S. have continued to earn an average of just 77 cents for every dollar a man earns.

For women of color, the disparity is even greater. In 2013, the pay gap between men and women amounted to an average annual of $10,876 in lost income.

“Current and future generations, including my granddaughters, are relying on us to do the right thing to ensure they have equal opportunity and equal pay,” said Dodd. “If we fail to bring change, women will continue to lose hundreds of thousands of dollars over their lifetimes to income inequality.”

“This issue needs attention and it needs it now,” said former Lake County Supervisor Denise Rushing, who was recently selected as the Assembly District 4 Woman of the Year. “It’s time we treat pay equity as a right, not a luxury, and I appreciate Assemblymember Dodd addressing this issue.”

While aggregate data on the gender pay gap is available, more nuanced data breaking down job category wages by gender and race has not been widely gathered.

In order to appropriately target efforts to reduce and eliminate the wage gap, this data needs to be collected.

In 2014, President Obama directed the U.S. Department of Labor to collect the gender and race pay data from federal contractors to fill in the same sort of missing pieces. AB 1354 seeks to do the same for California.

Dodd represents the Fourth Assembly District, which includes all or portions of Yolo, Napa, Sonoma, Lake, Solano and Colusa counties.

Lake County Department of Weights and Measures marks 'Weights and Measures Week'

LAKE COUNTY, Calif. – Civilization hangs in the balance … so to speak.

The process of buying and selling goods by weight or measure has been going on for thousands of years.

From a pound of grain to a gallon of milk, the importance of accurately weighing and measuring goods being bought, sold and traded, has been a cornerstone in marketplaces throughout civilization.

“Weights and Measures Week” began on Sunday.

If you get a chance, look for a county seal at your local gas station or supermarket.

The seal is a small round sticker with the year the scale, gas pump, etc., was last tested.

Once a year a county inspector tests each and every weighing or measuring device in the county to make sure they are accurate.

If they pass a series of tests then they receive a county seal.

Here in Lake County the Department of Weights and Measures works to ensure the consumer is getting a fair deal and businesses are operating on a level playing field.

From making sure items are correctly priced, advertised and packaged, to testing scales and gas pumps, Weights and Measures is there for the consumer.

Please contact The Lake County Weights and Measures office at 707-263-0217, if you suspect a weighing or measuring device to be out of order, or if you discover other mislabeled or deceptively packaged goods or sales prices.

Middletown High School Mock Trial Team receives $1,000 donation to attend state competition

022515mhsmocktrialcheck

MIDDLETOWN, Calif. – After winning the third annual Lake County Mock Trial Competition last month, Middletown High School Mock Trial Team can now look forward to attending the state competition in Southern California, thanks to the donation from a local businessman.

The team, which will head to Riverside March 20 through 22 for the state competition, has received $1,000 from Dan Nelson, vice president of Hoberg's Resort and Spa on Cobb Mountain.

Nelson presented a check to Middletown High School teacher Danielle Bruns, who coaches the team, and her students at Wednesday night’s Middletown Unified School District Board meeting.

“I’m thrilled to reward all the hard work these students put into developing and executing their mock trial prosecution and defense,” said Nelson. “It’s gratifying that I’m personally able to help them represent Lake County at the state competition in Riverside.”

Middletown High School has won the mock trial competition three years running.

“Dan’s donation really helps the team,” said Bruns. “Without donations like Dan’s, the team wouldn’t be able to get to the state competition in Riverside where they get to argue the mock trial case against the best teams in the State of California and represent Lake County.”

Nelson personally made the donation and plans to further help educational programs in Lake County in the future.

He also will be contributing to the community through partial proceeds of 2015 and 2016 Cobb Mountain Concert Series at the Hoberg’s Resort and Spa amphitheater.

Three Clearlake men arrested for beating, stabbing

022815stabbingsuspects

CLEARLAKE, Calif. – Three Clearlake men were arrested Saturday for a beating and stabbing that stemmed from a property dispute.

Jayson Wolfe Alvarez, 18; Giovanni Phillip Steffen, 22; and Jacob Thomas Steffen, 20, were arrested for felony assault with a deadly weapon, according to Sgt. Tim Hobbs of the Clearlake Police Department.

Hobbs said Alvarez and the Steffens went to the 3700 block of Robinson Avenue at around 4:30 p.m. Saturday to confront 27-year-old Clearlake resident Bret Gilliam.

The Steffens' sister is Gilliam's girlfriend, Hobbs explained. A dispute had arisen over property that had belonged to the Steffens' late mother, which they said their sister and Gilliam had taken.

Hobbs said Alvarez and the Steffens admitted they went to beat Gilliam up, and during the ensuing fight all three hit Gilliam.

Jacob Steffen then pulled a knife and stabbed Gilliam three times – in the upper and lower back, and the buttocks, Hobbs said.

The Steffens and Alvarez then fled the scene in a vehicle. “We were actually arriving when they were leaving, but we didn't know it was them,” Hobbs said.

Hobbs said Lake County Fire Protection District responded to the Robinson Avenue address, transporting Gilliam to a landing zone set up for a REACH air ambulance at Austin Park.

Gilliam was flown to Santa Rosa Memorial Hospital. Hobbs said he spoke with an emergency room nurse at the hospital Saturday and was told Gilliam is expected to survive.

Clearlake Police officers went to the 13700 block of Austin Drive where they contacted and arrested the three suspects, Hobbs said. Booking logs showed the men were arrested shortly before 6 p.m.

Bail for each of the three men arrested was set at $25,000. Jail records indicated that all three had posted the required percentage of bail and were released as of Sunday afternoon.

Court appearances for all three are tentatively scheduled for May 5, based on booking records.
