CLEARLAKE, Calif. – Three Clearlake men were arrested Saturday for a beating and stabbing that stemmed from a property dispute.

Jayson Wolfe Alvarez, 18; Giovanni Phillip Steffen, 22; and Jacob Thomas Steffen, 20, were arrested for felony assault with a deadly weapon, according to Sgt. Tim Hobbs of the Clearlake Police Department.

Hobbs said Alvarez and the Steffens went to the 3700 block of Robinson Avenue at around 4:30 p.m. Saturday to confront 27-year-old Clearlake resident Bret Gilliam.

The Steffens' sister is Gilliam's girlfriend, Hobbs explained. A dispute had arisen over property that had belonged to the Steffens' late mother, which they said their sister and Gilliam had taken.

Hobbs said Alvarez and the Steffens admitted they went to beat Gilliam up, and during the ensuing fight all three hit Gilliam.

Jacob Steffen then pulled a knife and stabbed Gilliam three times – in the upper and lower back, and the buttocks, Hobbs said.

The Steffens and Alvarez then fled the scene in a vehicle. “We were actually arriving when they were leaving, but we didn't know it was them,” Hobbs said.

Hobbs said Lake County Fire Protection District responded to the Robinson Avenue address, transporting Gilliam to a landing zone set up for a REACH air ambulance at Austin Park.

Gilliam was flown to Santa Rosa Memorial Hospital. Hobbs said he spoke with an emergency room nurse at the hospital Saturday and was told Gilliam is expected to survive.

Clearlake Police officers went to the 13700 block of Austin Drive where they contacted and arrested the three suspects, Hobbs said. Booking logs showed the men were arrested shortly before 6 p.m.

Bail for each of the three men arrested was set at $25,000. Jail records indicated that all three had posted the required percentage of bail and were released as of Sunday afternoon.

Court appearances for all three are tentatively scheduled for May 5, based on booking records.
