Former Yuba College Vice President for Academic and Student Services Dr. Kevin Trutna was appointed president/superintendent by the Feather River College Governing Board.

The decision was announced Feb. 6.

Dr. Trutna assumed the position of interim president at Feather River College on Aug. 6, 2012.

He earned his Ed.D. in Adult and Higher Education from Montana State University, Bozeman, Mont.

Chancellor Douglas Houston congratulated Trutna on this appointment, and said, “This will be a great move for Kevin who has been very professional in working with the trustees, faculty, and staff at Feather River College to ensure their college continues successfully serving students.”

Lisa Jensen-Martin has been serving as the Yuba College interim vice president of Academic and Student Services in Trutna’s absence.

UKIAH, Calif. – Mendocino College Foundation announced it will award five new scholarships ranging from $1,000 to $1,500 for 2013-2014.

Of the scholarships, three will be for nursing students, one for reentry women and one for a MESA eligible student.

The deadline to apply is March 1 before 4 p.m.

“On behalf of the foundation board, we are very excited and humbled to see our scholarship program growing so steadily. These opportunities were made possible by the generosity of our donors who are dedicated to helping students achieve their dreams,” said Katie Fairbairn, executive director of the Mendocino College Foundation which oversees the scholarship program.

Virginia Martinez Meek has created a perpetual scholarship in memory of her beloved late husband Wallace Meek Perez. This award will be given to students who are MESA (math, engineering, science achievement) eligible.

The Kathleen Kohn Fetzer Family Foundation Nursing Scholarship is named for one of Ukiah’s most esteemed winery families, and will be awarded to a student in the college’s nursing program.

Two additional scholarships designated for nursing students include memorial scholarships in honor of the late Dr. Hugh Curtis and Esther Stirling.

Curtis was a general surgeon and brought modern medicine to the Ukiah valley. Jean Stirling is the lead counselor at Mendocino College and created the Esther Stirling nursing scholarship to honor her late mother’s career as a registered nurse.

Dr. Lillian Vogel, a young at heart 103-year-old, has created a scholarship for reentry women to succeed in college. Vogel, a retired psychologist and author of “What’s My Secret?/Memories and Reflections on a Long Life,” is an inspiration to all women that anything is possible.

Boxer, Murkowski, Murray introduce bill to strengthen afterschool programs

U.S. Senator Barbara Boxer (D-CA), who chairs the Senate Afterschool Caucus, joined with Senators Lisa Murkowski (R-AK) and Patty Murray (D-WA) to introduce the Afterschool for America’s Children Act (S.326) to help children and families by investing in high-quality afterschool programs nationwide.

“When the school bell rings, too many of our children go home to empty houses because their parents work and cannot afford afterschool care,” Sen. Boxer said. “This bipartisan legislation will expand access to high-quality afterschool programs so that our kids have a safe and enriching environment from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m.”

“Studies have shown that afterschool programs are an enormous net-positive for our children, in terms of the best usage of time, but more important than studies are real-world examples like the 21st Century Community Learning Centers program across Alaska,” said Sen. Murkowski. “Afterschool programs fill the time outside of the school day with additional constructive and educational opportunities – instead of idle time, which can prove counterproductive – and provides effective benchmarks to ensure the programs are done responsibly.”

“I am proud to join with Senators Boxer and Murkowski in cosponsoring this bipartisan legislation that will help so many young people across America access safe and enriching afterschool programs,” said Sen. Patty Murray. “Afterschool programs are a proven way to improve academic performance, and we know that students who attend them are more likely to go to college and start off their lives on the right track.”

Senators Mark Begich (D-AK) and Joe Manchin (D-WV) are also co-sponsors of the bill.

This legislation would reauthorize the 21st Century Community Learning Centers (CCLC) program, which over the last decade has successfully provided millions of children with access to afterschool programs.

During the 2010-2011 school year alone, more than 1.6 million children attended afterschool programs at these centers.

While the number of children participating in afterschool programs has been increasing, the unmet need for afterschool activities remains high.

The 2009 report, America After 3pm, found that parents of 18.5 million children not currently participating in afterschool programs say they would enroll their children if a program were available to them.

Reauthorizing this program will ensure that children with working parents will continue to have a safe, well-rounded and enriching environment until the end of their parents’ work day.

The program provides enrichment activities to compliment regular academic activities and helps students, particularly those attending high-poverty and low-performing schools, meet state and local standards for core academic subjects such as reading and math.

The Afterschool for America’s Children Act would modernize the 21st CCLC program to improve states’ ability to effectively support quality afterschool programs, run more effective grant competitions and improve struggling programs.

In addition, it would enhance communication between local schools and afterschool programs to ensure afterschool activities complement the academic curriculum while encouraging parental engagement in student learning and improving the tracking of student progress.

Supporters of the bill include the Afterschool Alliance, National Parent Teacher Association, American Heart Association, National Association of Elementary School Principals, National Association of Secondary School Principals, First Focus Campaign for Children, National 4-H Council and YMCA of the USA.

Senators Boxer, Murkowski and Murray introduced similar legislation in the 112th Congress.

Carlé Chronicle: Bidding farewell to the lunch lady and a busy week ahead

We here at Carlé would like to start out by congratulating our former lunch lady, Annette, on her brand new job.

We all wish you the absolute best with this new position and we are so very happy for you, but most of all we’d like to let you know how much we miss you.

Along with this thank you we would like to add an official welcome to our new lunch lady Brenda, and our new breakfast lady Sabrina. Plaques are being made by our school business welcoming them both.

As I had mentioned in a previous chronicle the Carlé mascot Scabby had to be put down not too long ago. Carlé designer Summer Gunn decided to make a commemorative mouse pad for Alan and Angie with a tribute to Scabby on it. Summer is in the process of making a mouse pad for super secretary Barbara Dye as well.

Summer said her reason for doing this project was because Alan “is always doing so much for everyone else.”

The Clearlake Rotary Sea Food Broil Benefit is coming up very soon. The dates for the event are Feb. 22-23. Dan Maes and Ed Zander will be supervising the event and all of the students that volunteer.

The event calls for about 15 students to serve and buss tables. All student volunteers will receive community service hours or extra credit. For sign ups see Mr. Maes at Carlé.

Carlé’s Big Ping Pong Tournament will be beginning this week during lunchtime. This event is being run by our student council. Once again the media class will make the winners and second place finishers special personalized medallions.

It's portfolio time for two of our very best designers and students.

Junior Garcia, a top designer, had his portfolio on Thursday, Feb. 14. Junior has been with us for a while now so we’re happy to see such a fine student and hard worker succeed.

Nura Brown, our head designer and Interact club member, will have her portfolio this coming week. Nura also has been with us at Carlé for quite a while and we’ve really valued our time with her.

This year in particular Nura has taken on a lot of responsibilities for the school itself, so for that we are all grateful for her hard work and dedication.

Nura went above and beyond hosting a special Valentine's Day fundraiser for student council. With the help of Constance Hazelwood and others, Nura created beautiful Valentine gift bags. Thanks to a few anonymous admirers every single student at Carlé received one of these coveted presents.

This week’s CHILY winner was Jesse Harrell. Harrell took home the Dragon Incense Burning Statue and it will find a home up on his dresser.

Jesse Harrell is a student at Carlé Continuation High School in Lower Lake, Calif.
