Five new student scholarships announced at Mendocino College

UKIAH, Calif. – Mendocino College Foundation announced it will award five new scholarships ranging from $1,000 to $1,500 for 2013-2014.

Of the scholarships, three will be for nursing students, one for reentry women and one for a MESA eligible student.

The deadline to apply is March 1 before 4 p.m.

“On behalf of the foundation board, we are very excited and humbled to see our scholarship program growing so steadily. These opportunities were made possible by the generosity of our donors who are dedicated to helping students achieve their dreams,” said Katie Fairbairn, executive director of the Mendocino College Foundation which oversees the scholarship program.

Virginia Martinez Meek has created a perpetual scholarship in memory of her beloved late husband Wallace Meek Perez. This award will be given to students who are MESA (math, engineering, science achievement) eligible.

The Kathleen Kohn Fetzer Family Foundation Nursing Scholarship is named for one of Ukiah’s most esteemed winery families, and will be awarded to a student in the college’s nursing program.

Two additional scholarships designated for nursing students include memorial scholarships in honor of the late Dr. Hugh Curtis and Esther Stirling.

Curtis was a general surgeon and brought modern medicine to the Ukiah valley. Jean Stirling is the lead counselor at Mendocino College and created the Esther Stirling nursing scholarship to honor her late mother’s career as a registered nurse.

Dr. Lillian Vogel, a young at heart 103-year-old, has created a scholarship for reentry women to succeed in college. Vogel, a retired psychologist and author of “What’s My Secret?/Memories and Reflections on a Long Life,” is an inspiration to all women that anything is possible.
