CLEARLAKE, Calif. – Burns Valley School celebrated “Read Across America Day” on Friday, March 1.
Special guest Clearlake Mayor Jeri Spittler – complete with a colorful red and white “Cat in the Hat” hat – read to the children as part of the event, which celebrates Dr. Seuss's birthday and encourages reading.
Spittler read to classrooms in grades kindergarten through fifth grade.
After reading she gave them a class set of bookmarks and a book for their classroom library.
Students were excited to have ask questions about being the mayor and also to hear the story by a very beloved author.
For her contributions, Spittler reportedly got to keep the colorful hat.

UKIAH, Calif. – On Monday, March 4, the Mendocino College Foundation Board of Directors honored emeritus directors, trustees and faculty during their annual luncheon.
“Every year the foundation invites emeritus members of the foundation and college boards to a luncheon as a way to keep them informed about what’s happening at the college and to simply say, ‘thank you’ for their years of dedicated service to students and the college community,” stated Foundation President Gary Smith.
For the first time, emeritus faculty members were invited to this year’s event which was attended by over 50 people, including several current Mendocino College trustees.
Among this year’s guests were former college presidents Leroy Lowery and Carl Ehmann and current Superintendent/President Arturo Reyes.
Lowery was president from 1980-1990 and Ehmann served from 1990-2001. President Reyes has been at the helm for a little over two months.
This year marks the college’s 40th anniversary, and the three presidents represented more than 21 years of Mendocino College leadership.
Attendees learned about the new Library/Learning Center and had the opportunity to hear from two scholarship recipients.
Jason Cox, a nursing student, will graduate this May and had received the Karen L. Atkinson Nursing Scholarship.
Dafne Valdez, an Eisenhower Fellowship recipient and Foundation Scholarship recipient, discussed her plans to transfer next Fall to UC Berkeley.
Both students thanked the attendees for their support and stewardship of the foundation’s endowment which provides over $160,000 annually in the form of student scholarships.
The luncheon was graciously underwritten by Foundation Board member and long-time local Realtor Gary Nix.

NORTH COAST, Calif. – “Teachers on Teaching: Creating Inclusive Learning Environments,” a one-day conference for local and regional educators, will be presented at the Mendocino College campus in Ukiah on Saturday, March 9.
Beginning Saturday morning with check-in from 8:30 a.m. to 9 a.m. and ending at 3:30 p.m., the low-cost conference is designed to explore a variety of topics of interest to teachers across disciplines from prekindergarten through college.
“The Foundation Skills Teaching and Learning Community of Mendocino College is hosting this important local event to bring educators together to share ideas, build collaboration, and learn about current practices and projects in our community,” said conference coordinator and Mendocino College English Professor Debra Polak. “If you are a current or prospective teacher or school counselor, this conference is for you. We collaborate with Dominican University to offer Continuing Education Units for participants.”
She added, “It may also meet criteria for professional development ‘buy back’ days for some teachers. K-12 participants should check with their district office about potential credit. It will also qualify as a college flex activity, and we can provide proof of your attendance.”
Building on four previous annual conferences, topics for this year’s sessions include Learning Styles, Cultural Competence, Scaffolding to Reach Varied Learners, and Building Bridges from K-12 to College Learning.
A morning panel will explore the changing expectations of learning and institutional structures occurring in K-12 and College with a range of local educators representing primary school through postsecondary perspectives.
Breakout sessions will also emphasize collaborative communication among local college educators at all levels and strengthening partnerships in the community.
“The conference is organized for a Saturday so busy local educators will have the opportunity to participate,” says conference co-chair Virginia Guleff, Mendocino College Vice President, Education and Student Services.
“Based on past years’ successful format, we’re offering this year’s activities in a central location and at a low cost to help support local educators and their schools. Cost for the conference is just $18 and includes a fabulous lunch,” Guleff explained.
If participants choose to register for units through Dominican University, there is an additional cost.
Preregistration is required. To register or for more information, please contact the Mendocino College Foundation Skills email
