Carlé Chronicle: A busy time of service

The Student of the Week this week was Ray Green. Ray is just about to graduate. During his tenure here he has distinguished himself as an excellent student and an all around good person.

This week the CHILY award went to Lucas Carlson. Lucas chose a large stuffed bear with a heart as his prize, and ended up giving it to his girlfriend who also attends Carlé.

The Carlé Ping Pong Tournament has come to a close and we have a list of the winners. First place boys went to Joseph Sarro, second place boys went to Emilio Gonzales and Travaunn Lowe. First place girls went to Sabrina Farnan, second place girls went to Marla Mitchell. Congratulations to the winners, all of whom will receive special medallions with their names inscribed onto them.

On Feb. 23 Carlé students were offered the opportunity to volunteer for the Rotary sea food boil, and it ended up going very well.

During Friday night the set up at the senior center went smoothly. Carlé students set up the dining tables with all of the proper equipment needed, including cloths and utensils; some were quoted as saying it was the fastest set up they’d seen thus far, only taking two hours.

When the night of Feb. 23 came there was a total of 22 Carlé students who showed up to participate and help out at the event. Not only that, but the event itself was completely sold out.

The students were prepped on the several different courses that were served throughout the event. The students worked fast and hard the entire time, showing much dedication.

Each student was assigned a table, some students having more than one table, and they were very earnest in making sure that every single table had what they needed, when they needed it.

The meal consisted of barbecue tri-tip, followed by fresh lobster with drawn melted butter. When the main course came around it was poured into the center of the table from a five-gallon bucket that consisted of potatoes, corn, shellfish, crab legs and crawfish. For the last portion of the meals, dessert was vanilla ice cream with a special glaze sauce.

All in all, the “Carlé waiters” made sure that every need was met during the event, proving once again how great Carlé students are by being fine examples of hard working and dedicated students. Every student who participated received community service credits.

The following is a list of all of the students who volunteered for the event: Nura Brown, Mayra Pentoja, Cody Perdock, Blossom Niedenbach, Charles Trujillo, Jay Brown, Ray Green, Lucas Stickel, Camari Onwuasoeze, Chris Stutz, Marla Mitchell, Dane Pearson, Steven Tracy, Kasandra Colwell, Lukas Carlson, Chenoa Schmidt, Josh Kennedy, Esperanza, Trauvaun Lowe, Kobi Minard, Malia Askew and Sienna Norton.

Mr. Maes, the organizer of the event, would like to thank these students for a job well done.

UKIAH, Calif. – Mendocino College Foundation Executive Director Katie Fairbairn has been tapped to provide public information and marketing assistance to Mendocino College, announced Superintendent/President Arturo Reyes.

According to Reyes, “The college has embarked on the ‘Enroll 3100 Now’ campaign which if achieved ensures our current level of funding from the state. It is critical that we register an additional 270 full time students at Mendocino College over the next four months to meet our goal.”

Fairbairn has acted as the primary spokesperson for the foundation. “She and her staff have done an exemplary job of providing public relations and marketing materials about the foundation. The college needs that same level of support, and the foundation’s executive committee agreed at their regularly scheduled meeting on Tuesday. The agreement allows Fairbairn to spend approximately 40 percent of her time providing support to the college,” stated Reyes.

A graduate of Ukiah High School, Mendocino College and Sonoma State University, Fairbairn is no stranger to Mendocino College having worked there over 18 years.

Born, raised and educated within the community, she embodies the values, culture and tradition of the community, said Reyes.

For more information about public information at Mendocino College, Fairbairn can be reached at 707-468-3164 or This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. .
