LOWER LAKE, Calif. – More than 150 people showed up on New Year’s Day to participate in the fifth annual First Day Hike at Anderson Marsh State Historic Park in Lower Lake.
The hike is part of America’s State Parks First Day Hikes Program and has brought out more than 100 people each year it has been held at Anderson Marsh State Historic Park.
The event offers families and individuals an opportunity to begin the New Year rejuvenating and connecting with the outdoors by taking a healthy hike on Jan. 1.
Helping to lead and organize the walk were members of the Anderson Marsh Interpretive Association and local State Park rangers.

The organization has three family-friendly, hiking properties; one being open only on scheduled days and the other two being open daily.
The Rodman Preserve and Nature Center at 6350 Westlake Road, Upper Lake currently has 90-minute, 1.5-mile guided hikes scheduled every second and fourth Saturday of the month, beginning at 9 a.m.
Trained member volunteers from the Lake County Land Trust provide hike leadership, pointing out the interesting flora and fauna along the way, and providing a historical overview of the area.
Mark your calendar for Jan. 13 and 27, with hike leaders Katherine Lindsley and Pam Bordisso, respectively.
Hikers sign in at the Nature Center, where they can learn more about local wildlife and the Land Trust’s conservation efforts in Lake County.
Only in the case of excessive rain will the hikes be cancelled. A light rain can be refreshing, even bringing out some critters that may otherwise hide under bright, sunny conditions.
Bring water; sturdy, comfortable shoes; and a camera to capture the highlights of your hike. Binoculars will be provided.
Bald eagle sightings have been reported on recent Land Trust hikes, as well as varieties of hawks, great blue herons and egrets.
Lake County Land Trust’s Rabbit Hill, located on Stewart Street in Middletown, and Boggs Lake, on Harrington Flat Road off of Bottle Rock Road, are open daily during daylight hours, for self-guided walks and public enjoyment.
Exercise and enjoying the outdoors are activities that promote good physical and mental well-being.

KELSEYVILLE, Calif. – The Kelseyville High School boys and girls wrestling teams participated in separate tournaments this past weekend.
Coach Adam Garcia said the boys Liberty High School Lou Borzan Invitational tournament on Dec. 22 and 23, and the Lady Knights competed in the Brittany David Girls tournament on Dec. 23 at the same school.
Competing for the boys were Michael Beverlin, 126 pounds, 1-2 record, DNP; Jacob Jensen, 132 pounds, 1-2 record, DNP; Alex Garcia, 152 pounds, 5-1 record, third place; Bryan Carrillo, 182 pounds, 3-2 record, fourth place; Javante Gregoire, 4-3 record, eighth place.
For the girls, competitors included Kylie Marlin-Ambriz, 101 pounds, 1-2 record, DNP; Korbyn Marlin-Ambriz, 106 pounds, 3-2 record, eighth place; Elisa Jaquez, 126 pounds, 3-2 record, DNP; Brianna Thomas, 126 pounds, 2-2 record, DNP; Melanie Guerrero, 143 pounds, 1-2 record, DNP.
“This was a good tournament during the Christmas break for our school,” said Garcia.
He said Bryan Carrillo got himself on a lot of NCS coaches’ radar after this weekend. Prior to this season, Carrillo had been relatively unknown to the other coaches in the section but after posting some quality wins at Green & Gold and Lou Borzan, he's definitely an opponent that teams will be preparing for, Garcia said.
Alex Garcia continued his solid season with an overall record of 13-2. Both of his losses have been semifinals matches with both being a one-point loss. The last was to Windsor High School’s Trent Silva, who beat Alex Garcia 5-4 on Saturday.
“We knew going in it was going to be a tough match as Silva is a good wrestler on a good Windsor team. We have been looking for that match since last season as they both competed in the 138 weight class but the brackets never lined up for them to square off,” Coach Garcia said.
Now that Alex Garcia and Silva have wrestled, the coach said they will be better prepared for him next time.
Coach Garcia said Javante Gregoire has been very consistent this season with his strength and mental toughness. He has placed in three of three tournaments this season.
Korbyn Marlin-Ambriz dropped her first match and battled back to the 7/8 place match before losing to a wrestler from Windsor High School to finish eighth place, Coach Garcia said.

LOWER LAKE, Calif. – Anderson Marsh State Historic Park will offer a free community hike beginning at noon on New Year’s Day as part of America's State Parks First Day Hikes program.
First Day Hikes offer a great way to get outside, exercise, enjoy nature and welcome the New Year with friends and family.
The leisurely walk will loop through portions of the Cache Creek, Marsh and Ridge trails.
Hikers will experience grasslands, oak woodlands, willow and cottonwood riparian habitats and a large vernal pool near the end of the hike.
Hikers may encounter a variety of migrating and resident birds and other wildlife.
The hike should take between two and 2.5 hours. Participants are welcome to walk part way and make an early return at their own pace. Because this area is a natural preserve, no dogs may be brought on this walk.
Participants should bring water and snacks and binoculars if they have them, and a hat for protection against the weather. Sturdy shoes that can handle a little mud are recommended.
Anderson Marsh State Historic Park is located on Highway 53, between Lower Lake and Clearlake.
