LAKEPORT, Calif. – Charles (Charlie) Courtland Herren died suddenly Oct. 1, 2015.

He completes his journey, at 59, where it began on July 17, 1956, here in Lakeport with his twin sister, Sue.

He and Sue were the youngest children of Roy Douglas and Cleora Herren and joined their daughters Donna and Wanda.

Charlie grew up working and exploring the land with his father, where he learned to farm and shoot. He was a true son of Lake County and left no trail unturned.

With the skills and work ethic he learned from his father, Charlie found his way in many different trades: tree falling with Davey Tree, welding supply and sales at Lake County Welding Supply.

He also explored many of his own ventures: C&R Firewood (which he owned with his father), Herren Drilling, and finally American Pumping where he served this community for 10 years.

It would not be wrong to say he was a man of many talents and there were so many people in his life that benefited from his skilled hand. One is hard pressed to mention his name and not be flooded with stories of his selfless deeds.

For all of his skills none compare to his ability to talk. Always ready with a story or anecdote to listen and give advice.

He was a true master of the 45-minute goodbye and no one could escape, nor would they want to. It was a welcome gift, for many caught up in the hustle and bustle of life to slow down for a moment and share sometime with him.

He was a rebel, a rascal and a mischief maker from the beginning. He leaves a trail of smiles and stories as well as an arrowed foot and a misplaced bowling ball.

His antics and love will be remembered by everyone fortunate enough to share in his life. The rumble of a Harley will now and forever contain a little bit of him.

As a man he brought so much strength to the people around him. As a brother and son he brought support and pride. As a father he was generous, warm, openhearted and understanding. As a husband he was tender, loving, protective and a king. As an uncle he was supportive, caring and fun. As a grandfather he was a playmate, a teacher, a disciplinarian, and proud to be grandpa.

He lived true, he rode free and he loved big.

He leaves behind his wife of 11 years, Donna; son, Justin (Kat); daughter, Jamie; sisters, Donna and Florence (Sue); three grandchildren; and 12 nieces and nephews.

There will be a private celebration of life for Charlie on Sunday, Oct. 11.

LAKE COUNTY, Calif. – Beverly Nina Ballance, born February 12, 1930 in Salina, Utah was a woman who lived fully, often choosing the scenic route for the beauty and adventure it offered.

Artist, business owner, friend, wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, she was a cheerleader and comforter for countless who were part of her life.

She enjoyed traveling, painting, hospitality, letter-writing, dancing, golfing, long walks and picnics with her husband, Jack.

Her life began in Utah but years were spent in Idaho, Oregon, and California.

She worked tirelessly as a hairdresser for decades, gaining respect and a committed following. Eventually she opened Nina’s of Oakmont, a salon in Santa Rosa, and not only will she be remembered as the personality behind this gathering place, but as a strong, caring, creative presence in whatever community she was part of.

A significant chapter of her and Jack’s retired life was spent in Parkdale, Ore., where they made life-long friendships.

They led Stevens Ministries out of Parkdale Presbyterian Community Church. As a natural extension of her generous, loving and empathetic presence, this ministry cared for the emotional, spiritual and physical needs of the church community.

Just before her 70th birthday, she and Jack moved to Lake County, Calif., where her children reside.

Her final chapter was spent at Rocky Point Care Center in Lakeport, where many residents, staff and worship leaders became extended family.

After being surrounded by family for several days, she peacefully passed Monday night, August 31, 2015, in the presence of her husband.

She is survived by husband, Jack Ballance; son, Don Hunter; daughter, Barbara Carlson, and son-in-law, Carl Carlson; grandchildren, Roxanne Gibbs, Jordan Carlson, Joni Evans, Jonathan Carlson and Sara Ichtertz; seven great-grandchildren; as well as her brothers, Babe Hiskey (wife Eunice, and family) of Galveston, Texas, and Jim Hiskey (wife Lorraine, and family) of Annapolis, Maryland.

Per her request there will not be a formal memorial service, rather a family gathering at a later time.

Arrangements by Chapel of the Lakes Mortuary, 707-263-0357 or 707-994-5611, or visit www.chapelofthelakes.com .

LAKE COUNTY, Calif. – Marilyn Hoberg Angelley was born Oct. 14, 1931, and passed Sept. 20, 2015.

Marilyn was the daughter of George Hoberg Sr. and Gertrude Suhr Hoberg, beloved sister of George Hoberg Jr. and dear wife of William Angelley.

She is survived by her daughters, Pamela (Ken) Hook and Butchie (Doug) Knowles, and dearest life-long friends, Jack and Diane Gilford.

She has four wonderful grandchildren, Kate (Ken) Goldfine, Marilyn Hook, Kory Hook and Dylan Knowles. Marilyn also leaves behind many cherished nieces and nephews.

Marilyn was the fourth generation of her family to live on Cobb. Some of her fondest memories were of growing up at Hoberg's Resort during its “heyday” with her cousins Jane, Beverly and Richard Hoberg, and Don and Anne Marie Hoberg.

Marilyn met her future husband, Bill, at the Pine Bowl where you could "dance the night away under the stars." They were married for 52 years.

They endured the loss of their first home in a forest fire in 1962, and built a beautiful new home in 1964 in Pine Summit Estates. Marilyn lived there for the rest of her life, until the last few months. She never knew of the devastating losses from the Valley fire, which took her home and her beloved Hoberg's Resort.

Marilyn worked as the clerk of the Lake County Superior Court for 25 years, a job she found challenging and rewarding. She loved to golf at the Hoberg's Forest Lake Golf Course and she was a talented artist.

A celebration of life will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 14, at United Christian Parish in Lakeport, with a reception to follow. Inurnment will be private at Glenbrook Cemetery.

Marilyn's family would like to thank Brookdale Assisted Living Facility for the excellent and loving care they provided for Mama until her death.

The family would prefer donations in lieu of flowers to Hospice of Lake County, Lake County Animal Care and Control or The American Cancer Society.

Arrangements entrusted to Jones Mortuary www.jonesmortuary.com FD311, Lakeport, CA.

HIDDEN VALLEY LAKE, Calif. – Kimberly Dianne Halcomb Dornbush was born on July 26, 1959, in Brush, Colorado. She was called home by her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ on Oct. 1, 2015, in Hidden Valley Lake, California at the age of 56.

She was the youngest of five children born to Laurel Jeannie Pope and Loren Halcomb.

Kimberly grew up “on the go” and always seemed to have something on her daily agenda that she needed to get done from the time she was a little girl up until her death.

Her hobbies were countless, but she seemed to favor cooking, tending to her pets and other animals, traveling, golfing and planting flowers.

She had many endearing qualities, but demonstrated most graciously her value of compassion which she learned at an early age from her mother and grandmothers.

She possessed a strong, unending desire to help others no matter what was on her plate. Helping someone in need gave her the most pleasure and satisfaction in life.

Kimberly is preceded in death by her parents, Laurel Jeannie Pope and Loren Halcomb and both paternal and maternal grandparents, Corwin and Dora Pope and JA and Patsy Halcomb and numerous aunts and uncles.

Kimberly leaves behind many, many friends and family members including her daughter, Cassie (Jake) and grandson, Hayden; three sisters, Deb Halcomb Thompson (Jim) of Cheyenne, Wyo., Dawn June of Victoria, Texas, and Dora Grewing of Houston, Texas; one brother, David (Bonnie) Halcomb of Billings, Montana.

She will be dearly missed.

A celebration of life and memorial will be conducted at the Unity Church of Lower Lake on Saturday, Oct. 10, at 2 p.m.

LAKE COUNTY, Calif. – Robert Lee Kelly, 69, passed away at home after a courageous battle with brain cancer.

Born and raised in Woodside, Calif., Bob moved to Upper Lake in 1977 when he purchased acreage in Scotts Valley, Upper Lake, that would be known as Kelly's Kampground and RV Park for over 37 years.

He met his wife Patti that same year and they were married at the campground in 1979.

Bob operated the business until his illness in 2014.

He is survived by his loving wife of 36 years, Patti; his wonderful son, Matt; and his very caring mother-in-law Josephine Ortega and sister-in-law Pam Ortega.

At 6 feet 5 inches tall, Bob was an imposing man with a gentle spirit. He loved his beer, playing horseshoes, watching football, riding his ATV, and working on his property.

He loved people and he loved life. Many of his campers became lifelong friends, and many families made it a tradition to bring generations to camp at Kelly's. Many said he was “Kelly's Kamp” and couldn't imagine the park without him. We will miss his engaging stories and his larger-than-life presence.

“Good Night Sweetie, I Love You.”

We want to express our deepest gratitude to family and friends that offered support and encouragement during this most difficult time.

We are also grateful for the thoughtful care provided by Hospice and thereby request that in lieu of flowers, contributions in his memory may be made to Hospice Services of Lake County, 1862 Parallel Drive, Lakeport, CA 95453.

Bob requested there be no service.

Arrangements by Chapel of the Lakes Mortuary, Lakeport (FD1336).
