MENDOCINO NATIONAL FOREST, Calif. – The Mendocino National Forest is asking visitors in the Fouts Springs area, west of Stonyford, to be aware that a motorcycle enduro event is scheduled for Sunday, Oct. 23.

The event is being conducted under a special use permit issued by the Forest Service to the Oakland Motorcycle Club.

Additional enduro events are planned for the Fouts Springs area on the Grindstone Ranger District.

These events are scheduled for Sunday, Nov. 13, by the Valley Climbers and Sunday, Nov. 20, by the Richmond Ramblers.

The motorcycle enduro events are being held on designated roads and off-highway vehicle (OHV) trails.

The courses are not closed, meaning the routes will remain open for public use.

However, Forest visitors are encouraged to be aware of the following if they are recreating in the Fouts Springs area:

  • Pay close attention to signs in the event area indicating the route and the direction of travel – the event consists of one-way loops. If you are using part of an enduro route, you are encouraged to travel in the same direction, going with the flow of traffic.

  • Listen for traffic and, if driving in an enclosed vehicle, open the driver side window enough to be able to hear engine noise from approaching vehicles.

  • If you are driving, avoid cutting corners and stay to the right on the roads. For other recreational uses, avoid lingering on roads and watch for traffic.

These events typically draw hundreds of motorcycle riders and spectators to the area. Campgrounds near the event location are likely to fill up quickly.

The water for the Fouts Springs Recreation Area is currently shut-off until further notice.

As a result, the dump station at the site is also closed but will be available from 2:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. on the day of the event.

Forest visitors in this area will need to bring water with them for drinking and any other needs.

For more information, please contact the Mendocino National Forest at 530-934-3316.

The 2011-12 California Hunting Digest, Upland Game and Waterfowl issue will be available online only this year, the California Department of Fish and Game announced Tuesday.

The magazine can be found at www.dfg.ca.gov/publications/digest/.

The digest will not be available in print.

“The digest is a valued magazine,” said Bernadette Fees, DFG’s assistant deputy director for education and outreach. “We are proud of its popularity with California’s sportsmen and women.”

By publishing the digest online, DFG saves taxpayers thousands of dollars in printing and distribution costs.

Publishing online is also beneficial to the environment and is in step with DFG’s initiative on Going Green (reducing DFG’s carbon footprint).

It also allows California’s hunters to access the information on their home computers and on smart phones and tablets while away from home or work.

“This year’s online magazine will be formatted for easier viewing, and efforts will continue to produce future issues using the best publishing technology and most economical methods available,” Fees added.

The award-winning magazine is published biannually, and provides information on hunting opportunities, regulations and licensing, as well as on wildlife conservation.

The digest’s big game issue is produced every spring and the waterfowl and upland game issue is produced each fall.
