Flag football league reports on season's first week of play

CLEARLAKE, Calif. – Glory Days Flag Football League’s 2011-12 season fired up the competition between the two Lake County communities of Upper Lake and Clearlake for the first week’s games.


The Robinson Warriors from Upper Lake razor edged out the Devil’s Aces from Clearlake) with a 38-37 victory.


The Mobb Squad of Clearlake played its first game in the league, but were defeated by Upper Lake, 40-0.

HVL Men's Niners wrap up golf season

HIDDEN VALLEY LAKE, Calif. – The HVL Men's Niners Golf Club held a two-man team (3X3X3 format) Competition on Dec. 1.


This was the final event of the club's 2011 season.


The results were:


  • “A” Flight: The team of Fred Figg/Jeff Markham was first with net 32. The teams of Bob Brossier/Bendi Bendinelli, Dave Mann/Al Burrows, Cliff Hughes/Bill Brewster, and Bill Stricklan/Randy Brown all tied for second with 33.

  • “B” Flight: Jim Wilson/Ed Carver posted the lowest score of the day, 29. The father/son team of Jim Hodges/Jay Hodges was second at 30. Bill Helt/Doug Carter came in third at 31.


Closest to the par 3 pins were Ron Clark and Fred Figg.


Chip-ins were scored by Jim Stratton, Martin Seita and Joe Whitbeck.


Fifty men (25 teams) participated in this end of season event.


Congratulations go to Phil Tyler who became the HVL Men's Niners 2011 points champion last week for the second consecutive year. Well done, Phil.

Take a hike at Boggs Mountain State Forest Dec. 7

COBB, Calif. – The Friends of Boggs Mountain will offer a two and one-quarter mile hike on Wednesday, Dec. 7, at 9 a.m.


The hike will be moderately paced on moderate terrain and will be led by Darlene Hecomovich.


This is an opportunity to get some exercise while you enjoy the outdoors and the wonders of nature.


Some fall colors are still remaining, mushrooms are popping up all over after the recent rains, and the Douglas Firs are a reminder that Christmas is on its way. Come and enjoy it all as the hike takes place.


Wear sturdy shoes, dress appropriately for weather conditions, and bring water and enthusiasm.


Meet at the parking lot kiosk promptly at 9 a.m.


The forest entrance is located off Highway 175, just one and a half miles north of Cobb Village. Turn at the blue State Fire Station/Boggs Mountain Forest sign.

Nov. 30 game raises funds for basketball team

LOWER LAKE, Calif. – The Lower Lake High School junior varsity boys basketball team will square off with the Lake County Fire Department in a fundraiser game on Wednesday, Nov. 30.


The game will begin at 6:30 p.m. in the Lower Lake High School gym, 9430 Lake St.


Students with a student body card can attend for $3 and children under 6 may attend for free.


There will be a halftime three-point contest, with a $3 entry fee, and a free half court contest for all elementary aged students.


The event will benefit th Lower Lake High School junior varsity boys basketball program.
