BLM offers bald eagle hikes at Cache Creek

Details

Published: 19 January 2012
LAKE COUNTY, Calif. – The Bureau of Land Management will host free guided hikes to look for wintering bald eagles in the Cache Creek Natural Area in Lake County on Saturdays in January and February.

Hikes will be held, Jan. 21 and 28, and Feb. 4, 11, 18 and 25.

Hikes will be canceled in rainy weather.

Those interested in participating should reserve space for a specific date by calling the BLM Ukiah Field Office at 707-468-4000.

Early reservations are requested for the popular hikes, which are limited to 25 participants each and fill quickly.

Participants will meet at the Redbud Trailhead parking area, eight miles east of Clearlake Oaks on Highway 20 at 10 a.m. The trailhead is just west of the North Fork Cache Creek Bridge (38° 59' 13.20" N, 122° 32' 22.50" W).

The four-mile hikes last three to four hours. The trail includes a steep 600-foot climb in the first mile, so hikers should be in good physical condition.

Hikers should wear sturdy hiking boots suitable for wet conditions and dress for cold weather. They should carry water, a lunch and binoculars, as most eagle sightings are at a distance.

Hikers will enjoy scenic vistas of the Cache Creek Canyon, where eagles often soar over the creek or perch in streamside trees.

Participants often spot other wildlife including tule elk, golden eagles, osprey, herons, red-tailed hawks and egrets.

Additional information is available from the Ukiah Field Office at 707-468-4000.

Published: 17 January 2012
CLEARLAKE, Calif. – Glory Days Flag Football League’s week five games were totally different types of competition.

For the fans of football who enjoy being able to watch a team coast to a victory, there was the first game last Saturday.

Upper Lake got control of the game early in the first quarter and ended with a shutout of Mobb Squad 53-0.

For those who prefer some continuous drama, the second game was won by the Aces 33-32 over Robinson Warriors.

There were multiple lead changes in the fourth quarter and ended with a last second chance to go into this season’s first overtime game. The fans really enjoyed both games.

Kelseyville had their second bye and will return next week to finish the season.

The league is still looking for help with the chain crew for the rest of the season. They can provide training and there will be some modest compensation involved.

LAKE COUNTY, Calif. – Redbud Audubon Society will host a field trip to the Colusa National Wildlife Refuge on Saturday, Jan. 21.

The original plan was to go to the Sacramento Wildlife Refuge, but word that a rare falcated duck has been seen at the CNWR has prompted field trip organizers to switch locations.

This duck is a Russian duck and considered an extreme rarity to be seen here. So, here is your chance to add a very interesting bird to your life list.

Carpooling is available. Participants leave Lower Lake around 8 a.m. and meet on the east end of the Main Street to park in a place that won’t interfere with merchants in town.

Don’t miss this great opportunity to view a wide variety of migrating wildfowl with expert Audubon birders, as well as a possible sighting of the falcated duck.

For more information and to make reservations, contact Pat Harmon at 707-263-4977 or Roberta Lyons at 707-994-2024.

Information about the Redbud Audubon Society also is available at www.redbudaudubon.org.
