Youth invited to enter National Red Ribbon Week contest

Published: 24 October 2012

The National Family Partnership (NFP) announces the national contest for its 27th annual Red Ribbon Week, Oct. 23-31.

Red Ribbon Week is the oldest and largest drug prevention campaign in the country.

In 1985 after the murder of a DEA agent, parents, youth and teachers in communities across the country began wearing Red Ribbons as a symbol of their commitment to raise awareness of the destruction caused by drugs.

This year, families can get involved by entering a contest to promote awareness in their neighborhoods and win a drug prevention grant for their schools.

The odds of winning are good because families can generate their own online votes from friends, colleagues, schoolmates and family members (and the entries with the most votes win).

To participate in the contest families and students will decorate the front of their homes with this year’s message: “The Best Me Is Drug Free.”  Here’s how students and their families can enter to win $1,000 for their local K-12 school and a new iPad for their home:

Students bring the Red Ribbon Week message home by working alongside parents to decorate their front door, mailbox, fence, etc. with this year’s theme “The Best Me Is Drug Free.”

Take a photo with the family and their Red Ribbon Week decoration, then upload by Nov. 2 to www.redribbon.org/contest or www.facebook.com/RedRibbonWeek (must be parents or 18+ to upload photos).

Ask family and friends to vote for your entry at www.redribbon.org/vote Nov. 2-16. Ten lucky winners from regions across the U.S. will win. Winners will be announced at events at their winning schools in December.

“Students will once again take Red Ribbon Week’s message of prevention home to their neighborhoods with this national contest,” said the NFP’s Volunteer President Peggy Sapp. “By decorating their homes together with this year’s Red Ribbon theme, families carry the message to their communities.” The nation’s oldest and largest drug prevention campaign reaches more than 80 million people nationwide.

The DEA is co-sponsoring this year’s national contest. “DEA is excited to partner with the National Family Partnership on this contest that empowers communities to come together to talk about the drug problem,” said DEA Administrator Michele M. Leonhart. “Red Ribbon Week is also when we honor DEA Special Agent Enrique ‘Kiki’ Camarena, who made the ultimate sacrifice to keep our communities safe.”

Adds the NFP’s Peggy Sapp: “Take the Red Ribbon Week pledge across America to help children grow up safe, healthy and drug free.”

KELSEYVILLE, Calif. – The Taylor Observatory in Kelseyville hosted a Space Exploration Workshop on Saturday, Oct. 13.

Thirty Lake County decathletes and their coaches attended the workshop to help prepare them for their competition on Russia and the Great Space Race later this year.

Students were treated to a classroom presentation, full dome planetarium movies and rocket demonstrations.

Barbara McIntyre and Ed Giannelli led the classroom presentation detailing the chronology of the moon race and the top Russian rocket scientists.

Student volunteers led the discussion in the planetarium showing the movies Rocketman and Interstellar Boundary Explorer (IBEX).

Students finished up their day tracking the altitude of a variety of rockets lead by Bill Bordisso with the assistance of Angie and Josh Wade.

This workshop was offered free of charge to decathletes with the help of the Taylor Observatory and the Lake County Office of Education College-Going Initiative.

Earlier this year students were treated to a movie night at Jellystone RV Park and Camp Resort on Cobb Mountain.

Decathletes bundled up for a chilly evening showing of the 1968 movie “The Sea Gull” directed by Sidney Lumet on the outdoor screen. The two and a half hour movie was chosen by the coaches of the decathlon.

“Not only is this an example of Chekhov's style, but is a commentary on the time before the revolution, and as such is related to ‘Dr. Zhivago,’” said Coach Jim Rogers.

In their quest to learn about Russia, students are required to read the novel “Dr. Zhivago.”

Decathletes from Lower Lake, Upper Lake, Clear Lake, Middletown and Kelseyville High Schools will continue to learn about Russia as they prepare to compete for the opportunity to represent Lake County at the state finals in March.

Students are invited to participate in a scrimmage in November and will start their official testing in January.

Testing begins in January as they write their official essays and  compete in front of community volunteer judges for speeches and interviews.

Testing concludes on Feb. 2 followed by the Super Quiz Bowl and awards ceremony.

For more information on the Academic Decathlon or to be a speech/interview judge, contact Tammy Serpa at the Lake County Office of Education, 707-262-4164 or This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. .

Carlé Chronicle: A great Back to School Night, upcoming contests

Back to School Night was held on Thursday, Oct. 11, here at Carlé. It was a hit!

Plenty of parents and students came to listen, eat and have a general good time supporting the school.

As stated before students and parents showed up which is always a good thing to see, but as an added bonus the food was the best it’s ever been. To quote our math teacher Steve, “The food was fantastic!”

We’d like to list some students that brought some of the best food along with them: Cassie Garrett with pulled pork sandwiches, the family of Summer Gunn, Luis and Rosie brought homemade “churros,” Marla Mitchell a very special meat loaf. Thank you to all of you that brought such good food with you, it really enhanced the evening.

Here is what our principal, Dr. Jim Burger had to say about his first Back to School Night at Carle: “I really enjoyed it. It was a good turn out and it was very nice to see school connect to home. Having parents come out and show their support is very inspiring, I really enjoyed seeing that. Also, great food too, and plenty of it.”

For those of you that don’t know, we here at Carlé are having a mug contest where students can submit a design for a mug, and then get a free mug made by the students in the media class.

I personally like how that sounds. The only catch is that you have to design your own mug and sit down with another student to produce it. All Carlé students are welcome in this contest as well as every other contest we’ll have throughout the year.

In addition to the mug contest the media class has started designing and producing over 100 individual bookmarks that will be given to each and every student as well as all staff as a holiday present. We are aware that many students have a hard time during the holidays and that is why the media class decided that everyone will know that they are appreciated and thought of.

Quick update: At the end of this week we will be halfway through the second grade period which means we are one quarter of the way through this school year and that progress reports will be coming out for each student at the end of the week as well.

Student of the Week last week was Jay Brown. Jay is a kind and intelligent student who treats all those around him with respect. Congratulations Jay, we’re all very happy for you! Enjoy the pizza.

We would like to thank DJ’s Pizza of Lower Lake for their constant support of this important program at our school. They have been sponsoring our student of the week program for many years now. We all truly appreciate it.

Here at Carlé we have achievement levels for the students who are exceptional in their work and attendance.

The students that made our top level (gold) here at Carlé during the first grading period were: Mariah Bernal, Nura Brown, Emilio Gonzales, Ray Green, Kobi Minard, James Mora, Sienna Norton, Sara Peters, Steven Tracy, Charles Trujillo, Levy Venuto and Mayra Pantoja.

Jesse Harrell is a student at Carlé Continuation High School in Lower Lake, Calif.
