Investigation into marijuana shipping leads to Kelseyville man’s arrest

LAKE COUNTY NEWS REPORTS

KELSEYVILLE, Calif. – The service of a search warrant by the Sheriff’s Narcotics Task Force earlier this month resulted in one arrest, as well as the seizure of marijuana and approximately $6,500.

Arrested in the case was 48-year-old George Kevin Rhodes of Kelseyville, according to Sgt. Steve Brooks of the Lake County Sheriff’s Office.

On Thursday, Aug. 9, narcotics detectives received information from a detective with the Chesterfield County Sheriff’s Office in Virginia regarding a marijuana sales case, Brooks said.

The Chesterfield County investigation led to the seizure of three pounds of processed marijuana, which was reportedly shipped by Rhodes through the United States Postal Service, according to Brooks.

That same day Lake County Sheriff’s narcotics detectives secured a search warrant for Rhodes’ person and home, Brooks said. At 7:30 p.m. that day detectives served the warrant at Rhodes’ home on Gaddy Lane in Kelseyville.

When narcotics detectives entered the home, George Rhodes and his wife, 45-year-old Becky Lynn Rhodes, were detained without incident, Brooks said.

Brooks reported that narcotics detectives located 38 marijuana plants – which all were approximately 7 feet tall – growing outdoors. Detectives also located processed marijuana, digital scales, US priority mail packaging materials and $6,500 in cash wrapped in aluminum foil, vacuum sealed and hidden in a briefcase.

George Rhodes was arrested for cultivation of marijuana and possession of marijuana for sale. Brooks said George Rhodes was transported the Lake County Hill Road Correctional Facility and booked.

Brooks said Becky Lynn Rhodes also will be charged, but was not arrested at the time due to a preexisting medical condition.

The Sheriff’s Narcotics Task Force can be reached through its anonymous tip line at 707-263-3663.

082312norcalfiressatellitesmall

NORTH COAST, Calif. – There was another gain in acreage on Thursday for the wildland fire complex burning in northern Mendocino County.

The North Pass Fires grew to 18,500 acres by Thursday evening, with containment at 10 percent, according to Cal Fire and the US Forest Service, which have unified command due to the fires burning into the Mendocino National Forest.

The fires, burning in the Williams Valley area 10 miles northeast of Covelo, started early Saturday morning as a result of lightning strikes.

Two outbuildings have so far been destroyed, and incident command said another 75 residences, five commercial properties and 80 outbuildings remained under threat.

As a result, mandatory evacuations remained in effect for areas on Indian Dick Road and Mendocino Pass Road near Covelo, the Bauer Ranch subdivision and nearby US Forest Service campsites.

Approximately 1,096 personnel were assigned to the fire on Thursday evening, with 96 engines, 26 fire crews, two airtankers, six helicopters, 34 bulldozers and 21 water tenders on scene, incident command reported.

Elsewhere in the state massive wildland fires continued to burn on Thursday night.

New mosquito samples test positive for West Nile Virus

082312wnvsummary

LAKEPORT, Calif. – Four more mosquito samples collected this week in Lake County have tested positive for West Nile Virus.

All of the positive mosquito samples this week were the same species – the Western Encephalitis Mosquito (Culex tarsalis) – according to Lake County Vector Control.

The positive mosquitoes were collected from four different locations: Clearlake Oaks, Anderson Marsh State Historic Park, south of Kelseyville near Highway 175 and near Upper Lake, the district reported.

A total of nine mosquito samples from Lake County have tested positive for West Nile Virus this year. No other West Nile Virus activity has been reported in Lake County in 2012.

Lake County Vector Control District regularly traps and tests mosquitoes throughout the county to identify the areas that are at highest risk, and targets those areas for source reduction and treatment.

Jamesina J. Scott, Ph.D., the district manager and research director of the Lake County Vector Control District, said 2012 has already been a very active year for West Nile Virus, “and the West Nile Virus season still has at least another month to go.

She reminds residents that the two most important things they can do are: 1) dump out any standing water where mosquitoes develop, and 2) if you must be outside when mosquitoes are active, use a mosquito repellent (and always read and follow the label directions).

One neglected – or “green” – pool can produce more than 1,000,000 mosquitoes per week, and those mosquitoes can fly up to five miles.

The district recommends that residents avoid being outside when mosquitoes are active, especially near dusk and dawn; wear long sleeves and pants and use a mosquito repellent (always read and follow label directions) if they are outside when mosquitoes are active; and dump out buckets, wading pools and other sources of water where mosquitoes develop.

Lake County Vector Control provides free mosquito-eating fish to Lake County residents for use in animal water troughs, ornamental ponds and out-of-service swimming pools.

To report neglected pools or request assistance with a mosquito problem call the district for assistance at 707-263-4770 or visit www.lcvcd.org .

North Pass Fires jump in size, Lake County residents see more smoke

NORTH COAST, Calif. – A wildland fire complex in northern Mendocino County grew by more than 5,000 acres over the past day, sending more smoke south into Lake County.

The lightning-caused North Pass Fires reached 17,820 acres Thursday morning, with 10 percent containment, according to Cal Fire and the US Forest Service, which have unified command of the incident.

Burning since early last Saturday morning in the Williams Valley, 10 miles northeast of Covelo, the fires have burned into the Mendocino National Forest and have headed in the direction of the Yolla Bolly Wilderness area.

Officials said evacuations remain in place in areas east of Covelo.

On Thursday there were approximately 962 personnel assigned to the North Pass Fires, along with 93 engines, 26 fire crews, two airtankers, six helicopters, 37 dozers and 25 water tenders.

Lake County residents were seeing more smoke and haze in the air basin on Thursday, which county Air Pollution Control Officer Doug Gearhart confirmed was coming from the North Pass Fires.

He said the district had set up an air monitor in Upper Lake as a result of the fires.

The latest readings on Thursday morning showed air quality levels were at 50 percent of the state health standard, when normally they are 10 percent.

“It’s elevated but not above any health standard,” Gearhart said.

An area closure has been issued and posted for the area surrounding the North Pass fire. Visit www.fs.usda.gov/mendocino for more information.
