MADERA, Calif. – The second of three North State Modified Series/Madera Hobby Stock Challenge races was held at Madera Speedway Saturday night, and it was Steve Schermerhorn of Oakhurst who drove to victory in the Gone Fishin’ Marine 50 lap feature event to pocket $750 for his efforts.
With points leader Howard Holden dropping out early in the race, Schermerhorn took over the NSMS / Madera Hobby Stock Challenge points lead by four points over Holden. Richard Herzog, who set fast time and finished second in the feature, sits in third place, only three points behind Herzog.
The feature began with pole-setter Chuck Aguirre dropping to the rear allowing Dylan Blanton to power into the lead. But his lead was short-lived as Holden drove by to assume the number one spot on lap four. Then four rounds later Holden’s car lost power and stalled on the track to bring out the only yellow flag in the event.
When racing resumed Schermerhorn took control followed by Mark Blanton and Mike Nicks. Herzog worked his way through traffic, passed Nicks on lap 14 and drove under Blanton two rounds later. Meanwhile Schermerhorn was pulling away and had a half-lap lead on Herzog.
Aguirre retired to the pits on lap 22 as Herzog was reeling in on the leader. But Herzog did not have enough laps to catch up and settled for second behind Schermerhorn. Mark Blanton finished third followed by Nicks and Dylan Blanton.
The Buckhorn Bar & Grill Dash for Cash was won by Holden.
The next NSMS / Madera Hobby Stock Challenge event will be back at Madera Speedway on Aug. 3.

The senior division is boys and girls ages 13 to 16.
There are two leagues competing: Middletown-Cobb and Southshore.
This is the first time in a long time – maybe ever – in the 60-year history of Southshore Little League that it has hosted an all-star tournament. Both teams are excited to be playing locally.
The first game is Friday, June 21, starting at 5:30 p.m.
It is a double-elimination tournament so the next game will start at 9 a.m. Saturday, June 22. If a third game is necessary, it will start at 1 p.m. Saturday.
Please come and support both leagues. You'll see lots of community pride on display – right along with good baseball and outstanding sportsmanship.
The Southshore Snack Shack will be open for all to enjoy – breakfast sandwiches, super nachos, of, course hot dogs, burgers and tri-tip sandwiches. There will be plenty of water, soda, teas and Powerade. Oh and then there's candy, too. Please do not bring food or drinks to the games (they are not allowed at tournaments).
Support Southshore's fundraising efforts. They are working on field lights and the tournament is the league’s "Light the Night" fundraiser.
Come down to the ballfields and enjoy a little home-grown baseball. Support these young people. Bring your community pride with you.

MADERA, Calif. – Coming off a victory at Stockton 99 Speedway two weeks ago, Robbie Knittel of Lodi drove the Ferrari Farms #24 modified to his second straight $1,000 victory at Madera Speedway Saturday night as the North State Modified Series, presented by Protect the Harvest, completed race #5 of the 2019 Driving Out Cancer Awareness Tour.
Knittel also set fast time of 15.117 seconds and took over the NSMS points lead by two points over Cameron Austin of Santa Rosa.
Knittel drew the number six pill for the starting position inversion putting Kelseyville driver Darrin Sullivan and Brian Collins of Camino in the front row. Sullivan forged ahead at the start with Darrin Knight driving under Collins for second. Austin swapped places with Collins on three and Knittel joined the top four on lap four.
Austin moved to the high side and assumed second on lap five. Knittel also drove the outside groove around Knight, and for the next 13 laps Knittel and Austin raced side-by-side, swapping places with each pass. Knittel finally won the battle when they caught lapped traffic and Austin was forced to settle into third place.
Meanwhile Sullivan was enjoying a healthy lead, but his car started to push sending him higher and higher into the turns. This gave Knittel a chance to catch up, and once again Knittel took advantage of slower traffic and made the winning pass on lap 31.
Sullivan’s car bobbled slightly on lap 46 allowing both Austin and Knight to gain ground. With only 11 laps to go, Sullivan lost control and spun in turn four to bring out the yellow flag.
The final laps went caution free with Knittel holding off Austin for the win. Knight finished third followed by Jason Philpot, Keith Bloom and Brian Collins. Sullivan raced back to finish seventh ahead of Ian Elliott, Sal Lopez, Dale Didoha and Rick Avila.
Austin won $100 in the Lucas Oil Dash for Cash. Elliott collected $50 for second. They both took home Lucas Oil products as well as the Scribner jugs. Austin also won the Naake Shocks certificate.
Knittel was named the Keyser Hard Charger for passing the most cars. Frank's Radios gift cards went to Collins, Elliott and Lopez.
The North State Modified Series moves north to Shasta Speedway in Anderson, CA on June 22.

Applications for SHARE elk hunts will be available for purchase as of Sunday, June 16.
New additions to the program include 24 elk tags, 16 hunts and three properties. A total of 72 elk tags will be available during 47 hunts, with six of those tags going to junior hunters.
SHARE elk hunts will occur at various times between Aug. 15 and Dec. 24, 2019 on 31 select properties in Colusa, Del Norte, Humboldt, Mendocino, Shasta and Siskiyou counties.
Specific details for all 47 elk hunts can be found at www.wildlife.ca.gov/hunting/share#elk .
Applications will be accepted through Wednesday, July 24.
All elk tags will be distributed through a random draw process. While hunters may take only one elk per year in California, hunters may apply for more than one SHARE hunt.
These hunts offer additional opportunities to apply for an elk tag if you were unsuccessful in the elk tag opportunities provided through the general Big Game Drawing.
SHARE hunt applications can be purchased by anyone 12 years of age or older, with a valid 2019 California Hunting License from any CDFW license office or online at www.ca.wildlifelicense.com/internetsales .
An $11.88 non-refundable application fee will be charged for each hunt application. Applicants may look up their draw results and download their hunt packets on July 29 by entering their customer information on CDFW’s Web site at www.ca.wildlifelicense.com/internetsales .
The SHARE program was created to provide additional hunting, fishing and other recreational access on private lands in California by offering incentives to private landowners. Participating landowners receive liability protection and compensation for providing public access to or through their land for wildlife-dependent recreational activities.
