CLEAR LAKE STATE PARK – Meet retired park ranger Val Nixon at 8:30 a.m., Sunday, Feb. 8, at the Clear Lake State Park visitor center ramp for a guided nature walk in the park.

Through her years of service in the park, Nixon has intimate knowledge of the park. Her insight into the workings of the natural world gives those walking with her an even greater understanding of the importance of Lake County natural resources. With the unusual low lake level, the exposed shoreline may reveal more natural features than participants have seen previously.

Rain cancels the walk. There is no entrance fee to the park for participating in walks.

Walks are scheduled for the second and fourth Sunday of each month. The spring dates are February 22, March 8 and 22, and April 12. Guided walks will be featured as a part of the activities in the April 25-26 Wildflower Brunch and Heron Festival in the park.

Clear Lake State Park is located at 5300 Soda Bay Road, Kelseyville.

Lake County has full roster of fishing tournaments

Details

Published: 06 February 2009
LAKE COUNTY – Lake County has become an increasingly popular site for a growing number of fishing tournaments, derbies and contests – from fun, themed derbies for the whole family to major tournaments where professionals from all over the world compete for points, prizes, and money.

The 2009 schedule of Lake County tournaments features bass tournaments each month and promises an action-packed year of fishing for amateurs and pros alike.

Lake County is home to Clear Lake, California’s largest natural freshwater lake with 68 square miles of surface area and 100 miles of shoreline, and it is truly an angler’s paradise. Clear Lake has earned
a reputation for being home to “monster bass” – the lake record for largemouth bass is 17.52 pounds – and it is often referred to as the “Bass Capital of the West.”

The average tournament-winning weight for largemouth bass can exceed five pounds, a weight unmatched by any other lake in the nation. Clear Lake also boasts a large population of crappie, as well as huge catfish – with a record 33.25 pounds, and 20-pounders not at all uncommon.

Beyond Clear Lake, several other lakes in the area provide opportunities for a wide range of fishing experiences, including the clear waters of spring-fed Upper Blue Lake where several lakeside
campgrounds and resorts dot the shoreline; Lake Pillsbury; located in the expansive Mendocino National Forest; and for those seeking solitude, remote Indian Valley Reservoir.

Two of the most popular tournaments include:

March 14-15, Holder Ford / Lakeport Regional Chamber of Commerce Team Tournament
Considered by some sportsmen to be the most popular event on the lake, the laid-back atmosphere draws pro and amateur teams alike for the past 22 years. A barbecue dinner is served at 5:30 p.m. on Saturday at the Lake County Fairgrounds. Entry fees are $100 per team, plus $50 for the Big Fish Option or add $50 for the Big Bag Option. The teams especially appreciate the 100 percent payback in prizes on the entry fees for the event. The host lodging facility is Skylark Shores Resort, and the teams put in at Library Park, Lakeport. May 15-17, 25th Annual Catfish Derby, Clearlake Oaks / Glenhaven Business Association
“The largest catfish derby west of the Mississippi” and a benefit for community projects, the 26th-annual Catfish Derby features both an Adult Derby, with a grand prize of a new boat, motor, and trailer, and a Kids Derby for those 16 years old and younger, with a grand prize of a new quad ATV. Sponsored by the Clearlake Oaks/Glenhaven Business Association. Held from noon Friday through noon Sunday. Early registration from noon to 11 p.m. Thursday,  for $40. Registration also will be held from 8 a.m. to 11 p.m. Friday for $45. No registrations accepted after 11 p.m. Friday. Registration is $10 for kids. Barbecues, which are included with registration, will be held Saturday and Sunday. 12655 East Highway 20.  (888) CL DERBY, (707) 998-1006, www.clearlakeoaks.org.

The following tournaments will take place on Clear Lake or nearby lakes in Lake County in 2009. Some tournaments are for members only; please contact the organizers for registration information.

The Rider Report: Off the hook bass bite

Details
Written by: Lake County News Reports
Published: 30 January 2009

Solid bass fishing continues on Clear Lake! You know, there’s a lot of talk about the lack of rain, the shortcomings of the crappie bite and the low water level. But for all that it must be said that the bass bite is simply off the hook for this time of year on live minnows. The catfish action has been decent too.

With the lake temperature in the upper 40s and clear sunny days anglers are getting a rare opportunity to fish bass right on through the toughest season of the year. And, while we’re all hoping for rain, we’re also enjoying the fishing. On with the details …

On the bass front, things look great. Catch reports are in the 20s and 30s for a day’s efforts. Live bait rules the roost, but artificials are starting to have some play. As one angler put it to me Friday morning, “About an hour before sunset, things went wild. We could have caught them on almost anything.” Not exactly your typical winter report, but certainly welcome.

One of our popular guides was musing Friday morning that there were boats on all the wholes he went to fish this week. The lake is far from crowded, but folks are catching on …the bass bite is ON AT CLEAR LAKE.

For the crappie, I’m convinced that only with rain will we see any improved action on the crappie bite. The folks I sent out last week worked diligently to bring you a positive report, but to no avail. There just isn’t any action to write about. Keep calling, and keep checking our report, because the moment things change I’ll let you know.

Catfish fans are having a decent go of it with live jumbo minnows. Fish ‘em in all the same places we’re catching bass – deep water, drop offs and transitional areas. Rig them on a 4-foot leader attached to a three way swivel with a half to three-quarter ounce weight on the drop leg (about 14” long). Drift them slowly and pay attention to your rod tip. The bite may be subtle.

In our event news this week, the Clear Lake Ducks Unlimited chapter is hosting a dinner banquet on Feb. 21. The dinner will be held at the Lions Hall in Middletown on Central Park Drive. We’ve got tickets on sale here at Lakeshore Bait & Tackle as well as a preview of many of the firearms that will be available at the dinner. Please call 707.994.FISH (3474) or stop by our store for event information.

Bob Rider is owner of Lakeshore Bait & Tackle, 14913-D Lakeshore Drive, Clearlake, telephone 707.994.FISH (3474). Visit the store online at www.994Fish.com.
