Bass anglers are pleased to see some action, albeit not a hot bite, on lures such as Speed Traps, Shaky Heads, small swim baits like Mavericks hand pours and jigs. Chatter style lures and some spinner baits are kicking in too.
Still, the live jumbo minnow bite rules to roost. We’ve had solid reports of fish caught in as little as 2 feet of water and as deep as 25 to 30 feet. Certainly the bass are feeling the onset of spring as are our anxious anglers.
Crappie anglers are optimistic and finally starting to show up to try their hand. Hopes are that the influx of water to the lake will improve the bite as we move into spring. So far, no positive reports. What it is going to take is for of you diehard slab fishermen to get on the water and find ‘em. They’re here … We just have to get into ‘em.
The catfish action has perked up nicely! Big cats are on the move. We’ve seen whiskerfish in the upper teens and low 20s this week. Mackerel, sardines, live minnows and crawlers with shrimp have all been effective baits. Fish the areas where water flows into the lake, but stick to the edges of the stained water for best results.

NAPA – The Lake County Channel Cats participated in a swim meet in Napa last weekend.
More than 2 inches of rain dropped on them throughout the weekend but, according to Head Coach Agustin Merodio, “The wet weather didn’t slow the swimmers down!”
Both Matteo Merodio and Chelo Lundquist achieved “A” times and the other five swimmers all posted high “B” times.
“We even had one of our youngest swimmers – Roberto Chavez – compete in his first ever swim meet,” said Merodio, adding, “Chavez was able to establish times in the 25 yard Backstroke and the 50 yard Freestyle events.”
According to Merodio, Matteo was the second fastest 15 year old in the 50 yard freestyle event. “Given that some of the best swimmers in Northern California participated in this meet, this was a great accomplishment,” Merodio said.
Channel Cats Sarah Merodio, Allison Hanson and Charlie Adams are mere seconds off from achieving “A” times in various events. Anais Fay and Lauren Rudnick also competed with Fay earning her first “B” time in the 100 yard Individual Medley.
“The most heart-warming aspect of every meet for me is watching our swimmers cheer for their fellow teammates,” said team President Jennifer Hanson. “Almost the entire team will line up at the end of the lane and cheer for the swimmer in the event. Few other teams show this kind of support for the swimmer in the water. It is what I love about swimming – the team camaraderie.”
She added, “Our oldest swimmers will take the youngest under their wings and show them the ins and outs of competitive swimming. When an individual swimmer has a triumphant moment, the rest of the team shares in their glory. There is definitely no 'I' in this team – it is 'all for one and one for all' mentality.”
The swim team will next compete in Vallejo in March.

A fresh load of minnows on Friday virtually guarantees fishing success through the coming weekend. The bass bite continues to be good, the crappie are still pretty much a no show, and catfish are on the bite. Here are the details …
Our bass anglers have been out braving the rain this week to find that the bass are quite willing despite the changing conditions.
We’re seeing some activity in shallow water along docks and walls, but the majority of the fish are coming from the 20 to 25 foot depth.
Live jumbo minnows have been the hot ticket for bass up to nearly 10 pounds this week. Look for bass to be feeding well with the nice weather and improved water conditions on the lake this weekend.
Crappie … Still not much to report here. We’re looking for a few interested anglers to give the crappie fishing a go this weekend and report in with results. We’re all waiting to find out – did the rain bring the bite around? I’ll let you know when we find out!
Catfish are feeding well. The rain washes all kinds of good stuff into the lake to get these fish moving. Live jumbo minnows, nightcrawlers or mackerel are tops this time of year. Look for areas where muddy water turns clear around the creeks and streams to the most activity.
