CLEAR LAKE STATE PARK – Brad Barnwell will lead a bird walk in Clear Lake State Park at 8:30 a.m., Sunday, Feb. 22. Meet him at the visitor center ramp.

Barnwell has been studying and photographing the birds of the park for several years. He knows the best places to look for them and will share interesting details of the secret lives of many of the sightings.

Many photographers and birders come to this Audubon-designated important bird area (IBA) because of the abundance of birdlife in the park.

Recent sightings include bald eagles, great horned owls, sharp-shinned and Cooper’s hawks, and peregrine falcons. Many songbirds stay in the park all winter. This is also a time when migrating birds may show up at any time.

Binoculars, bird books and cameras are always great for added pleasure when birding. Rain cancels the walk.

Clear Lake State Park Interpretive Association sponsors nature and bird walks in the park on the second and fourth Sunday of each month. There is no entrance fee to the park for participating in walks.

Clear Lake State Park is located at 5300 Soda Bay Road, Kelseyville.

The Rider Report: Changing conditions in weather, fish bite

Details
Written by: Lake County News Reports
Published: 13 February 2009
Rainy days have been the order for the past week or so and we’re darn glad to have them. The rain was accompanied by a cool-down in daytime temperatures as well.

There haven’t been all that many anglers on the water, but those who have braved the winter elements have found the bass are still willing despite the changing conditions. Plus, there’s a hint of a crappie bite starting. The lake remains at about 47 degrees. On with the report …

The bass are cooperating with anglers using live jumbo minnows. Fish the entire water column to find fish that are in transition. We’re still hearing that larger fish are coming from deeper water, but we’ve had a few good reports of bass being taken in as shallow as 4 feet of water.

Before this series of storms hit, we were starting to hear a bit about artificials turning on again. I believe that this signals the very leading edge of a spring bite. Now don’t get me wrong, this is still winter as our weather would demonstrate, but I believe we’ll start to see swim baits, shaky heads and other springtime patterns taking hold soon.

I had a single, isolated report out of Konocti Harbor Resort yesterday. The caller said that they fished in the rain and caught some nice 2-plus pound crappie. They didn’t limit, but they did catch some nice fish.

Now, I’m far from calling this a “crappie bite” but it does offer a ray of hope. We know that the best crappie fishing here on Clear Lake in recent history has been when the weather is lousy. And lousy weather is what we’ve had. So again, I’ll keep you posted if we get more word on the crappie bite.

And, as usual, I’m keeping plenty of medium minnows on hand for those that want to try their luck with the slabs. Conditions sure seem right to give it a go … Also of note, we’ve seen some pelicans return to the south end of the lake. Typically, where they are the bait is also … and where there’s bait there’s game fish.

Nothing new to report on the catfish front. Jumbo minnows or mackerel in deeper water. My bass angler customers are catching them on the jumbos they’re using for the bass. (Which, by the way, drives them nuts!) I will say that we’ve got 2009 Catfish Derby applications in the shop and this year we can take your registrations right here if you like. The derby will be held May 15 through 17 and offers to be another fabulous fishing event.

In other event news, we’re just a little over a week away from our Ducks Unlimited dinner banquet. The event is on Saturday, Feb. 21, at the Lions Hall in Middletown. Tickets are on sale here at Lakeshore Bait & Tackle in Clearlake. Call 994-3474 for more information or to reserve your seats in advance. Tickets will not be sold at the door. Come join us and help support wetlands conservation in our community.

'Bass Edge' strikes California gold on Clear Lake

Western angler Jamie Cyphers, shown here, filmed an episode of the 'Bass Edge' television show on Clear Lake, California. This episode airs on the Outdoor Channel on Feb 12-14 and May 14-16, 2009. Catch the entire season of Bass Edge in high-definition with host Aaron Martin at 8 a.m. EST Thursdays, 9 a.m. Fridays and 2:30 p.m. Saturdays. Photo courtesy of 'Bass Edge.'

WASHINGTON, Mo. – “Bass Edge” is out west on Clear Lake.

Western angler Jamie Cyphers and host Aaron Martin identify several patterns that catch fish on the episode to air Feb 12 to 14 and May 14 to 16.

“Bass Edge” can be seen weekly on Outdoor Channel at 8 a.m. EST Thursdays, 9 a.m. Fridays and 2:30 p.m. Saturdays.

The Bass Edge crew was hosted by the waterfront Skylark Shores Resort in Lakeport (www.skylarkshoresresort.com).

“This is possibly one of the best lakes in the western United States,” Cyphers said. “While we were fishing in a tougher time of year with low water conditions and heavier than normal grass density, we were still able to show that with a little versatility anglers can use about any technique they want and have a tremendous day on the water.”

He added, “I believe anglers all over the country will get exposed to some new baits and cutting edge presentations that will work on their home waters as well.”

Also on this episode, Elite pro Pete Ponds shares tips for fishing crankbaits and the Pond Boss, Bob Lusk, explains how the spawn works. Mike Webb shares his thoughts on when and how to throw soft stickbaits.

Catch more “Bass Edge” on World Fishing Network HD and WildTV in Canada, bassedge.com, “The Edge” (the top bass fishing podcast on iTunes) and the “Inside Edge” monthly e-newsletter.
