Black powder class offered in Yolo County April 28

The California Department of Fish and Game’s Advanced Hunter Education Program is offering a black powder hunting clinic Saturday, April 28, in Yolo County.

The clinic is scheduled from 9 a.m to 5 p.m. at the Yolo Sportsmen’s Association Range.
 
Designed for all skill levels, the clinic will include both lecture and live-fire exercises.

The lecture portion will include a short history of black powder shooting, different styles of black powder rifles used today, how to safely load and shoot a black powder rifle, laws and regulations pertaining to black powder hunting and strategies for hunting with black powder firearms.

The live-fire exercise will include target shooting with black powder firearms.
 
All course material and black powder firearms will be provided. Personal firearms shall not be brought to this clinic.

The cost is $45 per person and space is limited to 25 people.

Participants 16 years and younger are free, but must be accompanied by a registered parent or guardian.
 
Participants should register online at www.dfg.ca.gov/huntered/advanced/blackpowder.aspx .

After registering, participants will receive an e-mail with a map to the facility, and a list of items to bring.
 
The Yolo Sportsmen’s Association Range is located five miles northwest of the city of Davis.

Flag football league wraps up season

CLEARLAKE, Calif. – Glory Days Flag Football League’s 2012 Championship game, played in perfect football weather at Haverty Field in Clearlake, was won by Upper Lake with a score of 33-0 over the Angry Byrds of Clearlake.

The event featured pregame and halftime activities produced by Lay’em Down Entertainment.   
         
The league also held an All Star game at Austin Park on Saturday, March 17.

The league thanked the following local businesses for their support throughout the season.

March 17 field trip planned for Middletown Trailside Park

MIDDLETOWN, Calif. – The monthly field trip for the Redbud Audubon Society will be held on Saturday, March 17, starting at 9 a.m.

The outing will be at the Middletown Trailside Park at 21436 Dry Creek Cutoff near Middletown.

Take Highway 175 as you approach Middletown from the north, then turn left on to Dry Creek. The park is on the left as you proceed south on Dry Creek. Meet in the parking lot there.

This is a nice walk on flat terrain on the county’s 107-acre park. Expect to see a variety of songbirds.

H.V.L. Men's Niners Golf Club opens 2012 season

HIDDEN VALLEY LAKE, Calif. – After having been rained out March 1, the H.V.L. Men's Niners Golf Club opened its 2012 season with a low net (sweeps) competition on Mar 8.

The results were:

  • First flight: Randy Brown finished in first at net 33. Al Burrows was second with 35 and Dave Mann came in third at 36.
  • Second flight: Juergen Haller posted the lowest net of the day, 31. Don Dornbush was second, 33. Jeff Markham, Jim Stratton and Doug Healy tied for third at 35.
  • Third flight: Bill Lyon was first, 32. Mason Butler was second with 35 and Pete Gumina third, 36.

Closest to the par 3 pins were Ben Kennedy and Al Burrows.  

Chip-ins were scored by Juergen Haller and Jeff Markham.
