Carlé Chronicle: School hosts prom, outreach training

LOWER LAKE, Calif. – Carlé High School hosted its annual prom on April 20 at the campus.

The theme was “Fiesta” and had the quad decorated with cactuses, tiki torches, pretty decorative lights, tissue paper flowers, a photo booth backdrop, etc.

We would like to thank the DJ Andre Ari for putting on some of his best music and also to thank his whole family because they have all been disk jockeying our prom for several years.

I would also like to thank counselor Julie Colfax for putting on fantastic activities for everyone that night and also thank our lovely campus security officer Stephanie Green and Leo Flores for their wonderful spirits and presence. Jose Carrillo also pointed out that the decorations at prom were marvelous and very realistic. Thank you to our student council and the decoration committee. Prom looked so beautiful and was a night to remember.

We would like to congratulate Marbella Gabino, Hunter Chadwick and Maria Pizano for receiving student of the week! You guys have been incredible and hard working students.

Last week we had a student outreach training, which was very interesting. First I want to thank Jeff Devoll, Loren Freeman, Robert Rickett, Mason Gizard, and Adam Shipp for coming to our school and making an impact in our lives. Several people talked about their experiences with suicide or a traumatic event in their lives.

One of the stories that took an emotional toll on all of us was when a father got a message on a sticky note implying that something was wrong. His stepkids had gone with their biological father who was on drugs and very paranoid.

They were driving along an icy road and the daughter remembered that her father had told her that he was sorry and drove off the road committing suicide. She survived the car crash but her father and baby brother did not.

Our hearts ached throughout the whole story and prayers go out to the family and hope they heal from that.

The training helped a lot of us out and we are so grateful that they had the chance to come to our school and educate us on these hard to talk about but important things.

My final article will update readers on all the graduates and awards, retirees, the final gold level trip, scholarships that people will be receiving, etc.

UPPER LAKE, Calif. – Mediacom Communications presented Nicholas Warner, a 2018 graduate of Upper Lake High School, with a $1,000 scholarship as part of the company’s World Class Scholarship Program.

The award recognizes the Upper Lake resident for outstanding leadership and academic accomplishments.

Mediacom annually gives $1,000 scholarships to 55 graduating seniors to provide support for the students’ post-secondary education.

Mediacom’s local area operations director, Shawn Swatosh, presented the scholarship to Mr. Warner during the high school’s recognition program held Wednesday.

“As a technology company, Mediacom understands how important it is to invest in future leaders like Nicholas Warner,” Swatosh said. “I’m proud that my company supports talented local students with scholarship support, and we congratulate Nicholas on his accomplishments.”

Recipients must attend an accredited two-year or four-year college, university or technical school within the United States.

Mediacom plans to continue funding its World Class Scholarships in all areas where it provides digital cable and broadband services.

SACRAMENTO – The California Community Colleges has announced the expansion of the NextUp program to 15 additional California community colleges.

NextUp, formerly known as Cooperating Agencies Foster Youth Educational Support, or CAFYES, gives current and former California foster youth extra support when pursuing their higher education goals at a local community college.

“Students in foster care often face a more challenging path to higher education than many of their peers,” said California Community Colleges Chancellor Eloy Ortiz Oakley. “Expanding this important program to more colleges will give more foster youth the tools they need to succeed in college and help them accomplish their higher educational goals.”

NextUp was initially established through the enactment of Senate Bill 1023 (2014). Senate Bill 12 (2017) allows the Board of Governors of the California Community Colleges to expand the number of community college districts operating NextUp, depending on available funding.

NextUp promotes academic success by using an in-person, individual approach when offering support and services, including books and supplies, child care, counseling and career guidance, educational planning, emergency housing assistance, food assistance, health services, life skills, financial literacy, mental health services, transportation assistance and tutoring. Support and services vary by college.
