Though this test has no effect on their grade, Carlé students did their best on the test so that they could show how well they had been taught this material. Some students disagree with the idea of standardized testing, because a high score on the STAR test does not necessarily mean the student was taught any better.
Some students think that the state should reconsider how they measure a student’s knowledge. Other students disagree and think that these tests can be good for getting a general idea of how students are educated at a school.
Open House was on May 8, and was a wonderful as well as interesting event. It was a potluck, so everyone who could bring a small dish to share, and it was a delicious feast.
May 8 was the date that teacher Alan Siegel announced something that was of great surprise to everyone at Carlé. Our principal, Bill MacDougall has been promoted to superintendent of Konocti Unified School District!
This is exciting news in that he is now able to change the way the education system is run in the entire district, but sad news that he will no longer be principal of Carlé High School. This school will miss him dearly, but we can’t wait to see how he recreates everything good about Carlé throughout the school district.
All of the students had a lot to say about Bill’s promotion. Many wanted to thank him for bringing them out of an unhealthy life in a bad community and into such a great place as Carlé.
Everyone admires his patience in helping kids get through and rise above their problems.
“He’s been there for me and my brother as family,” said Bonny Passley.
Courtney Lawson said this: “He made Carlé into something no other school can compare to.”
Marquice Lamar had this to say: “I’m sad that he’s leaving, but I’m glad that he is taking a step forward … and never forget about Carlé!”
Lavonne Pattee said, “With Carlé, Bill has been able to impact all of its student and now he has the opportunity to do the same thing in a much larger scale.”
So, everyone would like to congratulate Bill on this exciting new achievement!
That is all for this week’s Chronicle. Thank you for reading!

The CHP will fuel that love for literature with several thousand books collected during the seventh annual César E. Chávez Children’s Book Drive.
The campaign was co-sponsored by the CHP, the Department of Housing and Community Development (HCD), the Department of Financial Institutions (DFI) and the Business, Transportation and Housing Agency.
CHP Commissioner Joe Farrow was very pleased with the huge number of books that were dropped off at area offices statewide.
“Californians were incredibly generous in their book donations, and these books will really be appreciated by thousands of children,” said Commissioner Farrow.
More than 9,000 books were collected during the seventh annual César E. Chávez Children’s Book Drive that began on March 31 – Chávez’s Birthday – and concluded May 5.
"Education and housing are the foundation of strong families and vibrant communities," said Lynn L. Jacobs, Director of the California Department of Housing and Community Development. "These books will inspire the dreams of young people throughout the state, which in turn will help their communities thrive."
The César E. Chávez Children’s Book Drive began in 2001 with the idea to honor César Chávez for his humanitarian efforts and to commemorate the first César E. Chávez Day of Service and Learning.
HCD employees originally donated books to farm worker children for distribution to HCD’s Office of Migrant Service Centers throughout California.
The book drive has since expanded to include schools, shelters, and other charitable organizations. Since its inception, more than 60,000 books have been donated.
“Often the simplest of gestures can have the most powerful impact,” Commissioner Farrow said.

Many students are presenting their portfolios this month, being that they will be graduating very soon. David Ochoa and Amanda Long will both have their portfolio on May 5, and Ayla Hummingbird is having her portfolio on May 8. Larissa Spurling and Cody Oudeman are scheduled to have their portfolios on May 12.
On May 8 May both Carlé and Blue Heron will each have their Open House night. Blue Heron’s Open House will last from 5 p.m. until 6 p.m., and the Open House for Carlé will be from 6 p.m. until 7:30 p.m.
During Carlé High School’s Open House, Parents will be able to come see all of the things that students have accomplished. There will also be performances by our school’s talented musicians and drama club. Many of the performances that were shown at our Cabaret will be put on at the Open House.
Angie Siegel is teaching a special hazardous materials class for gold level students from May 12 through May 16. This is an intense weeklong course.
This week’s student of the week was Courtney Lawson. She was voted for by the staff because she does more than is required in everything she does. We would all like to congratulate her in receiving this award!
Prom is this upcoming weekend, and many students are preparing for an incredibly fun night. Prom Kings and Queens are being nominated, decorations being prepared, food being bought and music being picked. It is our last week to prepare for an absolutely wonderful prom, so the prom committee and the student government are both very busy. We are all certain the prom will be a huge success just like the Cabaret that funded it.
That is what is happening this week at Carlé; I hope you have a great week! Thanks for reading!
