WASHINGTON, D.C. – VSA seeks outstanding teaching artists with disabilities for the Teaching Artist Fellowship program.

VSA recognizes the value of integrating the arts into education. Teaching artists with disabilities serve as role models of diversity, expression, and inclusive learning in the classroom.

This program identifies, engages, and supports teaching visual and performing artists with disabilities who have demonstrated a high level of mastery in their artistic discipline and who possess educational experience.

Selected teaching artist fellows will attend a professional development retreat in Washington, D.C.; receive subscriptions and memberships within the teaching artist network; engage in networking and teaching opportunities in Washington, D.C., and other areas; enroll in the VSA Community of Practice, a professional development website; serve as facilitators for VSA education programs; and be profiled in VSA’s publications.

Applications must be received by April 23.

VSA Teaching Artist Fellows are selected through a competitive process. Selection is based upon artistic merit, prior artistic and educational experience, professional references, and application responses. Applications are available online at www.vsarts.org/taf . Alternative formats are available upon request. For more information, call 202.628.2800, ext. 3865, or e-mail This email address is being protected from spambots. VSA, the international organization on arts and disability, was founded more than 35 years ago by Ambassador Jean Kennedy Smith to create a society where people with disabilities learn through, participate in, and enjoy the arts.

VSA provides educators, parents, and artists with the resources and tools to support arts programming in schools and communities. VSA showcases the accomplishments of artists with disabilities and promotes increased access to the arts for all people.

Each year, 7 million people participate in VSA programs through a nationwide network of affiliates and in 52 countries around the world. VSA is an affiliate of the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts. For more information about VSA, visit www.vsarts.org .

From June 6 to 12 VSA will bring together artists, educators, researchers, and policymakers with and without disabilities from around the world for the 2010 International VSA Festival, a multicultural celebration of the arts and arts education.

The festival will feature a dazzling array of visual, performing, literary, and media artists. The guest list includes more than 2,000 people, including VSA’s 52 international affiliates, its U.S. network, and audience members from all corners of the globe.

This article marks the end of the fourth grading period, meaning there is only 33 percent left in this school year!

So of course, open house is right around the corner. It will be on April 1 and everyone is encouraged to bring a hot dish. Whether you can bring a dish or not, we would like to have every Carlé student and their families attend and have a good time.

We had our Wyo Tech field trip on March 4 and it went very well. All of the students had a great time and learned a lot of information about the three schools they visited: Wyo Tech, Yuba in Marysville and UTI.

“The field trip went very well, it was very good to see the differences between the schools,” said Principal Ed Zander.

Also, we have Alan Siegel running the Carlé contingent for the Soroptimist Night Live community service event that took place Saturday March at the Clearlake Senior Center. Students will set up, serve, help with the auction and clean up afterwards.

We would like to thank Harriet Rogers for generously donating a fishing pole and a model sponsor boat to any Carlé student with 90 percent attendance or better. We will have a drawing to determine the winner.

Finally, we are all very proud of Jonathan Truax, Phoenix King, Christina Ortega, Rebecca Englander, Lisa Davis, Justin Boyce and Jeremy Burton, the members of Odyssey of the Mind who competed in the regional competition at Santa Rosa High and came in second place! Santa Rosa High came in first.

The Odyssey of the Mind Group said the regional competition was amazing, and it was fun and unique to see how the other OM members acted out their problem solving skills. They said it will be interesting to see them again at the finals.

Next up for our award-winning OM team, they will be going to Brentwood on March 27 and competing in the state finals.

Finally, Carlé High school would like to congratulate student of the week Alyssa England. Alyssa has worked very hard every day to improve her skills and put herself on the track to graduate. Alyssa has been a model of hard work and perseverance.

March 5 is right around the corner, meaning the end of the fourth grading period!

We have two more six-week grading periods left after we are done with this one, and prom is almost here. The date is set for April 24 and the theme is “Masquerade.”

We have also settled on dates for spirit week: it will be the week of April 19. Specific events for each day are not set but will follow.

On March 4 we have Aaron Trammel and Josh Hays' portfolios. Good luck and good job to both of you.

The mouse pad competition is over and we had a lot of great winners, 25 in all. Among the winners were Kara Boyce, Ryan Cumpston, Kodi Burr, Jessie Eubanks, Dikota David, Gerald Stahlmen, Justin Boyce, Chelle Perry-Alden, Kayellia Lansdowne, Jonathan Truax, Ittally Heart, Tyler Gillam, Cierra

Tripp, Christine Mcquown and Mathew Vaughn. All received mouse pads from Carlé's student-based enterprise.

The next contest coming up will be a flag contest where students will be able to design their own flags, with a Carlé theme which will be flown around the quad until the end of the year. Flag designs are due March 14.

The fashion fest went very well, and there were a lot of compliments from the community.

“The students represented Carlé very well, they served food and cleaned up afterwards. Kara Boyce was one of the models and all Carlé students cheered her on,” said our principal, Ed Zander.

The students who participated in this event were Kara Boyce, Anthony Henson, Phoenix King, Erika Streckfuss, Andrea McMullen, Tonya Smith, Daniel Alverez, Allen Weemes, Christine Mcquown and Chantelle Clemons.

We would like to thank all of the students who worked community service events this past weekend and did a great job representing Carlé in the community.

Daniel Alvarez was our student of the week because he always has great attendance, signs up for every community service, does great work and is very dedicated. He has a great attitude and overall embodies what a Carlé student should represent. Congratulations, Daniel, and keep up the great work.

On March 24 René and Michael Skidmore will come to talk with our student council about restarting a paintball club. Of course, this will be done safely and under supervision. René and Michael provide the equipment and a place to hold the paintball tournament and we are all very grateful to them for providing this privilege.

At the school site council meeting, we managed to get the funds to replace Angie's old, slow computers with six new ones. We will also be purchasing two digital video cameras and one new still camera for Carlé students who are doing photography and video.
