SACRAMENTO – On Thursday Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger announced the appointment of David Crane to the University of California Board of Regents.

“David’s contributions during his time in my administration have shown his commitment to doing everything he can to make California great,” said Schwarzenegger. “Serving as a member of the Board of Regents, I know that David will devote the energy, tenacity and creativity needed to keep the University of California the finest public university system in the world.”

Crane has served as special advisor to the governor for jobs and economic growth since 2004 and has been a board member of the California High Speed Rail Authority and the Commission on Economic Development since 2007.

Previously, Crane was a partner with Babcock & Brown from 1979 to 2003. Crane is a board member of the David and Carla Crane Foundation, the Jewish Community Center of San Francisco and Building America's Future and an advisory trustee of the Environmental Defense Fund.

“I’m honored to have been selected by Governor Schwarzenegger to become a member of the Board of Regents,” said Crane. “I look forward to working with the Regents to ensure access to a high quality and affordable education for California’s students.”

Crane, 57, of San Francisco, earned a juris doctorate degree from the University of California, Hastings College of the Law and a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Michigan.

This position requires Senate confirmation and there is no salary. Crane is a Democrat.

TAG program a success at Mendocino College

UKIAH, Calif. – This fall, 18 Mendocino College students completed Transfer Admission Guarantee (TAG) applications to UC schools.

Students from Mendocino College have been accepted through TAG agreements into: UC Davis, UC Irvine, UC Merced, UC Riverside, UC San Diego, UC Santa Barbara and UC Santa Cruz.

The program is coordinated through the college’s Career and Transfer Center and its director, Candie Dickinson.

“Not all high school students and parents are aware of this opportunity,” said Vice President of Education and Student Services Meridith Randall. “For students who know which UC they would like to attend, but who cannot enroll at a four-year school immediately out of high school, this program allows them to finish lower-division requirements much more cost-effectively, then move on.”

Dickinson added, “A junior-level community college student actually has priority consideration over other transfer applicants.”

Dickinson meets with students individually about their TAGs and also offers a variety of transfer workshops throughout the school year.

By participating in a TAG program, students receive early review of their academic records, early admissions notification, and specific guidance about major preparation and general education coursework.

Seven UC campuses (UC Davis, UC Irvine, UC Merced, UC Riverside, UC San Diego, UC Santa Barbara, UC Santa Cruz) offer guaranteed admission to California community college students who meet specific requirements.

The TAG application was accepted between Sept. 1 and 30 for any student looking to transfer to one of the seven UC campuses for Fall 2011. The application was available to students July 1, 2010.

For students wishing to transfer in Spring 2012, only UC Merced accepts TAG applications between May 1-31, 2011.

All seven UC campuses offer a variety of programs in support of transfer admission for community college students.

More specific programs and support services are available to help transfer students earn their UC degrees once they have enrolled.

Students had practiced very hard for Dec. 11's annual Christmas caroling with Dr. Heidi Morgan of Yuba College.

“I'm very excited to have had 12 Carlé High School singers for our caroling this year. We sang at Meadowood Nursing Center, the Konocti District Office, Lower Lake Elementary and Yuba Community College's Christmas party. The students were very enthusiastic with extremely beautiful voices to follow. It was an honor to sing with all of them,” said Dr. Morgan.

The students that were involved in this terrific occasion were Ashleigh Short, Emily Thompson, Robert Potter, Kayellia Lansdowne, Stephanie Trout, Tonya Smith, Darren Gasperoni, Holly Brumback, Monica Jackson, Justin Lindsey and Lucas Powell.

Another Lower Lake Community Action Group dinner was held on Wednesday, Dec. 8. Our student team of helpers were Ellie Hackler, Karalena Cole, Stevie Cook, Tyler Sterling, and Aaron Mearns.

“We have the best team working together, and we would all like to send best wishes to Kelly Slater

hoping she gets well soon,” said Carlé team leader Ellie Hackler.

“We really enjoyed helping Rotary this year with the Christmas dinner that took place at Burns Valley Elementary School on Dec. 11. It benefits many families in our community by providing food and gifts for our children. We appreciate Kinene Barzin for being the liaison between Rotary and Carle High School,” said Principal Ed Zander.

Student of the week this week is Leah Davidson for all she does for our school. She helps recycle every day and is a great member of student council.

“Not only is Lisa Davidson an amazing student but she is also is amazingly helpful as my classroom aid,” said teacher Verna Rogers.

Carlé's OM (Odyssey of the Mind) Team has begun their journey together recently deciding the topic they will further explore for this year's competition.

Building a Goldberg Machine one step at a time we have a great team this year, and know it's going to be very exciting. Thanks to Principal Zander and Kim Van Horn for helping start OM this year.

OM tournament members include: Karalena Cole, Stevie Cook, Lisa Davis, Dylan Ward, Tonya Smith, Kayellia Lansdowne and Justin Lindsey.

Finally, Carlé would like to give a big shout out to Middletown teacher Lisa Kelly who was awarded State Teacher of the Year officially this week at a ceremony in Sacramento. Our own teacher, Alan Siegel, was part of the state teacher of the year selection committee and was on hand in Sacramento to

cheer Ms. Kelly. Congratulations on your wonderful award, Ms. Kelly!

Karalena Cole is a student at Carlé Continuation High School in Lower Lake, Calif.
