Published: 18 January 2012
The California Department of Education (CDE) and the State Board of Education (SBE) are recruiting applicants for the Curriculum Framework and Evaluation Criteria Committee (CFCC) to assist with the revision of the Mathematics Framework for California Public Schools: Kindergarten Through Grade Twelve (Mathematics Framework).

The Mathematics Framework will be revised to incorporate and support the Common Core State Standards for Mathematics, adopted by the SBE in August 2010, and to reflect recent research on effective mathematics instruction and current statutes.

Applications will be accepted through April 18, 2012. The Instructional Quality Commission (IQC) will submit a list of recommended applicants to the SBE for appointment in July 2012.

The CFCC will meet up to six times to conduct the work of revising the Mathematics Framework. The meetings have been tentatively scheduled for the following dates: Sept. 6-7, 2012; Oct. 4-5, 2012; Nov. 1-2, 2012; Dec. 6-7, 2012; Jan. 16-17, 2013; and Feb. 13-14, 2013.

All CFCC meetings will be public and take place in Sacramento. The CFCC will work with the framework writers and CDE staff to develop a draft Mathematics Framework that will be submitted to the IQC for field review in March 2013.

The SBE will take final action on the Mathematics Framework in November 2013.

The CFCC will include between nine and 20 members who will be selected to ensure balanced representation of regions, mathematical content knowledge, and grade-level experience.

Please note that there is no stipend for service on the CFCC, but reimbursements for travel costs will be provided by the CDE. Unfortunately, the CDE cannot provide reimbursements for substitute costs.

The application process uses an online application posted on the CDE Mathematics Curriculum Framework Web page at http://www.cde.ca.gov/ci/ma/cf/.

The deadline for submission of applications is April 18, 2012.

SAN FRANCISCO – As part of its ongoing dedication to strengthening communities throughout California, Pacific Gas and Electric Company on Friday announced the launch of its PG&E Bright Minds Scholarship program.

PG&E will award up to $1 million in scholarships to enable high school, community college and “non-traditional” students to complete their higher education paths.

Bright Minds scholarship winners will receive full-ride scholarships of up to $30,000 per year; program finalists will receive $2,500 towards their studies.

“Over the last decade, PG&E has contributed nearly $40 million towards educational initiatives and, with today’s announcement, we are proud to deepen our commitment to education and to the communities we have the privilege of serving,” said Chris Johns, president of PG&E. “By supporting deserving students, we can help them realize their full potential.”

The PG&E Bright Minds scholarships will be awarded based on a combined demonstration of community leadership, personal triumph, financial need and academic achievement.

Eligible students will be enrolled in a full-time undergraduate program at an accredited two- or four-year college, university or vocational-technical school for the duration of the 2012-2013 academic year.

The deadline for applying for the PG&E Bright Minds Scholarship is Feb. 17, 2012.

For more information and to apply, visit www.pge.com/brightminds. Scholarship winners will be announced in the spring.

In addition to the scholarship opportunities available through the PG&E Bright Minds program, the PG&E Employee Resource Groups (ERGs) also are accepting applications for a wide variety of scholarships. In 2011, PG&E’s ERGs awarded more than $255,000 to 153 students.

More information can be found on the “Scholarship” link at www.pge.com/community. The deadline to apply for the ERG scholarships is Jan. 17.

Now that the winter break is over Carlé's third grading period is halfway through.

Jan. 27 will be the end of the grading period and the school year will be halfway complete.

On Jan. 5, Emily Thompson had her portfolio showing and on Jan. 12 Tucker Barnett and Shannika Chandler had their portfolios shown as well. They are now all proud graduates of Carlé High School.

On Jan. 16 Carlé will be off for Martin Luther King Jr.'s birthday.

Once again Carlé will take part in a cotton ball community service. The project is called “Any Positive Change” and they pack sterile cotton balls in the hope to stop the spread of blood born disease such as HIV.

The seventh period class is now mandatory for students with less that 80 percent attendance or less than four credits in a grading period. However any student who wants to boost their credits is welcome to join as well.

In addition any student who has received three tardies will also have to attend a seventh period class.

Last weekend Carlé students helped with a community service diner at the Rebekahs Lodge. It was a great opportunity to help a wonderful cause. The Carlé students and staff are very happy to help an organization like this.

The Rebekahs Lodge is a nonprofit organization that helps the community by holding fundraising dinner every other Friday. Four of Carlé students will be helping them out on a regular basis.

The Student of the Week this week was Jade Fox. Jade is a phenomenal student who takes her role as Carlé's spokesperson through these articles very seriously.  The staff is very proud of her.

That is all for now, have a great week!

Jade Fox is a student at Carle Continuation High School in Lower Lake, Calif.
