Gebhard: Suffering from the Malthusian theorem

Details
Written by: Dave Gebhard
Published: 06 June 2008
The serious problems of climate change, water and food shortages, and disease, are all exacerbated by overpopulation. With almost six billion people in the world, the availability of arable land, clean water and food is limited. The waste products of modern life is overwhelming our own habitat. We are poisoning ourselves, and suffering from the Malthusian theorem. The one that states that food increases arithmetically and population exponentially.

It is a crime that our administration has tied foreign aid to not giving birth control to their citizens. One of the success stories is Brazil, where they rejected our foreign aid in order to decrease their population's growth rate to a controllable level. That and their use of sugar beets to make fuel has allowed them to be comparatively free of imported oil.

When are our leaders going to wake up and realize that overpopulation is just increasing current problems, especially since we are not dealing with them now.

We need to change course, and disregard the religious sanctions against population control measures, especially tying foreign aid to them. The third world and those who are not well educated are those most in need of birth control information and assistance. Our government needs to take leadership to help reduce unwanted and unneeded births, it is far better than watching them starve or die of disease.

Tie foreign aid and welfare in this country into a program to limit unwanted births to prevent starvation, and worse in the future. The program to tie welfare into Norplant was a bust, but a good idea. Children should not have to be born into families who cannot provide for them, food, shelter, clean water and a basic education. It is cruelty to children, to bear them vicariously, and make them raise themselves.

Konocti Christian Academy (KCA) would like to thank all the generous supporters of their third annual Renaissance Faire and Shakespeare in the Meadow on May 10.

More than 175 guests attended and enjoyed students' presentations of Shakespeare’s “Hamlet” and “Twelfth Night.” Thanks to local artists who demonstrated woodcarving, leather working, era-inspired music, brass rubbing, archery, face painting to kids and adults alike.

Special thanks to Deb Baumann and her horse Sunny for their exciting “Riding for the Rings” and to Joel and Ben Sombs for their trebuchet (catapult) demonstration.

Guest chefs Chris and Kelly Moe and Wes Nelms smoked pork was one of the highlights of the gourmet lunch. The live and silent auctions were a huge success thanks to the many and highly generous donations of:

Wiloth: Thanks for trail ride fundraiser support

The Wiloth Equine Therapy and Riding Center would like to say a sincere “THANK YOU!” to everyone that attended, sponsored, and volunteered at our second fundraising trail ride at the beautiful Langtry Estate and Vineyards.

The Langtry Estate and Vineyards provided a stunning three-hour ride! Valleys, meadows, lakes, and cattle were all viewed along the ride. We are truly grateful to them for allowing us to hold our fundraiser in such a beautiful, secluded environment!

We had nearly 100 riders, making this ride our most successful yet! With the help of many of our local teachers and volunteers, the day went off without a hitch. Middletown FFA provided a delicious meal, and the prizes donated by several local merchants helped to make this event a true success.

This fundraising ride helped us to garner enough funds to not only continue bringing therapeutic riding to the special education students of Lake County at no charge, but increase the allotments as well. Thank you again to all of the participants for helping us to help the children in our county!

Our next fundraising ride will be Aug. 9, at the beautiful Shannon Ridge Winery in Clearlake Oaks. For more details, information, or if you would like to be a sponsor, please visit our Web site at www.wilothenterprises.com or contact Susie Wiloth at (707) 994-5887, (707) 355-1280 or This email address is being protected from spambots. Gore: Sailboat case makes news across the country

Details
Written by: Thomas K. Gore II
Published: 02 June 2008
This case is making news all across the country. It is obvious that when a sailboat has the right of way and is run over by a power boat that the power boat with its greater maneuverability is at fault. Even if it is driven by a sheriff. That the driver of the sailboat is being prosecuted is a travesty of justice.

If you can get ahold of a copy of “Chapman's Piloting, Seamanship, and Small Boat Handling,” I'm using the 62nd Edition, starting on page 134 it discusses the "Rules of the Road" with the pertinent parts being on page 138, "Determining Safe Speed"; page 139, "Determining Risk of Collision" and "Actions to Avoid Collisions"; page 140, "General Right of Way Provisions," "Actions by the Give-way Vessel"; page 142, "Sailing Vessel Rules"; particularly the part on Page 143 titled "Sail's right of way over power."

I think that these sections should give you enough background material to make the case.

Thomas K. Gore II lives in Oxford, MD.
