Slaight: The issue remains the same

Details
Written by: Tom Slaight

Thank you to the Lake County News for publishing my letter questioning the information that we are given concerning Lake County air quality.

The comments my letter received, however, were troubling. One comment from a reader alluded to some vague, unexplained notion of a contrail conspiracy. Others took the bait and responded to that diversion, instead of my letter concerning air quality and accountability.

There may be no quicker way to sabotage a legitimate issue than to simply mention the loaded word, “conspiracy.” Having local officials and politicians define their terms and support their statements seems to me to be quite reasonable. That was the issue and it still is.

Gebhard: Committing national suicide

Details
Written by: Dave Gebhard
Published: 26 May 2008
America, the country of creativity and the cradle of innovation, is committing suicide by using voodoo economics. Running negative import/export balances of payments, and paying for a war on the installment plan, is idiotic. A home or business would be in bankruptcy long before now. The deficit can only go so high before the debt service or interest, exceeds the realistic ability of taxpayers to pay. After all, we need money to run the country in the future.

Are our lawmakers public servants or our deciders? Are their real masters the rich and corporate bigwigs? Why else would they pass tax cuts for the wealthy knowing that someone else must pay the freight, which by default is the middle class, because the poor by definition, cannot. Who else benefits when death taxes for those with estates over $3 million are cut? Who benefits more from laws governing business and banking, than the rich? When health, safety and clean air regulations for businesses are made voluntary not mandatory, the public good suffers.

Finally, regarding health care, billions are spent each year without covering 44 million Americans. Those who are not covered are automatically covered by the taxpayers. We need to have a single-payer health care system to include all Americans and their medications. In addition, we need also to include temporary immigrant workers in the tax base. Thus, they contribute and are covered while working here. A precedent is the bracero program of times past. Weed out the criminal element and give temporary work permits to the healthy for a three- to six-month period.

America needs to find a leader who believes in Democracy, the public interest, and the greater good. One who believes in bottom up stimuli and economics, instead of trickle-down or supply side.

Miller and Barrows: Gonsalves doesn't know her neighbor

Details

Published: 25 May 2008
When we read the letter to the editor from HVL resident Terri Gonsalves about a garbage incident, we were in disbelief that our home town paper would print such a personal attack in the runup to an election. Mostly, though, we wondered how Ms. Gonsalves could possibly be talking about our friend, Susanne La Faver.

The Susanne La Faver we know has indeed brought her grieving neighbors (parents, children and concerned adults) together to help heal the hearts of everyone touched by the tragic Walker family incident in early April. The Susanne La Faver we know has spent her career mediating disputes and finding win-win solutions for organizations, their customers, clients, employees and stockholders. The Susanne La Faver we know volunteers endless hours quietly working to improve the lives of all who live in Lake County.

Ms. Gonsalves, it sounds like you really do not know your neighbor, Susanne La Faver. We encourage you to talk to her and get to know her. We believe you will find that she is a kind, compassionate woman.

La Faver: Responding to letter about trash

Details
Written by: Lake County News Reports
Published: 24 May 2008
In response to a letter to the editor from Terri Gonsalves (Gonsalves: Responding to campaign mailer, May 24)

The trash in question was spilled by the refuse company, but on multiple occasions was left in the street along with the trash bins.

Nobody likes dirty diapers and unsanitary garbage left in the street all day where others have to drive through.

The author of this letter was not present when her daughter was asked to pick up their garbage. Her angry letter greatly exaggerates the conversation.

Since this long-ago incident, we now have a clean neighborhood and trash is no longer an issue.

Susanne La Faver lives in Hidden Valley Lake.
