Clearlake man arrested for sexually assaulting juvenile

020615kurtnorlingmug

CLEARLAKE, Calif. – Police have arrested a Clearlake man who is alleged to have sexually assaulted a juvenile female last week.

Kurt Adam Norling, 51, was arrested on Feb. 6 on several felony counts, including lewd and lascivious acts, willful cruelty to a child, false imprisonment, harmful matter sent with the intent of seducing child and a drug charge related to him allegedly providing two juveniles with drugs, according to police and booking records.

Sgt. Nick Bennett said Clearlake Police officers were dispatched to the St. Helena Hospital Clear Lake Emergency Room on Feb. 6 on a report of a possible sexual assault victim.

The Clearlake Police investigation revealed that two female juveniles had been hanging out with Norling the prior weekend at his residence at 3620 Vista St., Bennett said.

During that time Norling had furnished the juveniles with methamphetamine, falsely imprisoned them in his room and committed indecent acts on one of the juveniles, according to Bennett.

Norling was arrested by Clearlake Police officers and booked into the Lake County Jail. He remained in custody on Tuesday, with bail set at $100,000.

A search warrant signed by a Lake County Superior Court judge was served on Norling’s residence, Bennett said.

Bennett said that during the execution of the search warrant, evidence was located supporting the information obtained during the investigation.

Anyone with information relating to this case is encouraged to contact Det. Ryan Peterson at the Clearlake Police Department, 707-994-8251, Extension 320.

Patterson said the store had its “soft” opening on Jan. 31.

The store's grand opening event will feature free prizes and special deals. The first 100 adult shoppers at the store will receive a $10 Dollar General gift card and the first 200 shoppers will receive a Dollar General tote bag, among other giveaways.

California Water Service Co. gets grant to help maintain Lucerne water supply

LUCERNE, Calif. – California Water Service Co. announced that it has received a $136,000 grant from the State Water Resources Control Board’s Division of Drinking Water to perform a two-phase improvement project on its intake pump in Clear Lake, the sole water source for Cal Water’s Lucerne area customers.

The grant, which will allow Cal Water to draw water from lower water levels and maintain an uninterrupted water supply for customers, also will enable the company to complete the project without impacting Lucerne customers’ water rates.

“We have been closely monitoring the water level in Clear Lake, and given the severity and duration of the drought, our customers’ water supply would be affected in another dry year,” said Martin A. Kropelnicki, Cal Water president and chief executive officer. “We are also very sensitive to rate increases and understand the potential rate impact improvements like this could have on our small customer base.”

Due to the drought, the lake’s water levels were threatening to drop too low to be pumped by existing equipment.

As a short-term solution, Cal Water crews extended the depth of the pump by 2 feet. The extension enables the company to continue drawing water as the lake level declines further.

For the second phase, Cal Water is designing a long-term solution that includes a floating intake pump structure that is responsive to rising and falling lake levels to draw water from the lake.

The floating structure can also allow water to be drawn from different levels in the lake, which could require less treatment in the water treatment plant and be more cost-effective in the long run.

“I am very pleased that our team consisting of local employees, engineers, and water quality professionals were able to secure grant funding to enable us to make the necessary improvements to help ensure a reliable supply of water to our customers without a financial impact to them,” Kropelnicki said.

Early morning fire burns motorhome

CLEARLAKE, Calif. – A fire early Monday morning destroyed a motorhome.

The vehicle, parked in the area of 19th and Irving avenues, was reported to be on fire at around 7 a.m., according to reports from the scene.

Capt. Dave Deakins of the Lake County Fire Protection District said the vehicle was fully involved when firefighters arrived.

It took firefighters about 10 minutes to knock the fire down, Deakins said.

No one was in the motorhome at the time of the fire, and Deakins said there were no injuries.

He said the fire was attributed to a candle that had been left burning inside the motorhome.
