CLEARLAKE, Calif. – The Lake County chapter of the NAACP honored St. Helena Hospital Clear Lake and its Chief Executive Officer David Santos for improving access for those with disabilities.
On May 12, Santos was presented with a Silver Life Membership to the NAACP in recognition of his leadership, collaboration and commitment to civil and human rights.
Chapter President Rick Mayo and Roger Scuitto, life membership chairman, presented the award to Santos.
Mayo and Santos worked with the chapter’s ADA committee closely over the past two years to remedy access issues at the hospital and its affiliated clinics.
These improvements included changes at the outpatient lab, admissions area, rehabilitative services clinic and at the St. Helena Family Health Center-Clearlake.
With the installation of power doors, wider entrances and accessible equipment, these services are now more accessible and comfortable for those using wheelchairs, walkers and other mobility devices.
“Our goal is always to ensure that patients have access to our services, especially as we add new programs and welcome new providers,” explained Santos. “When we hear about barriers, we immediately work to find meaningful solutions so that the door is literally open to everyone in our community.”
Mayo appreciates the collaboration and action over the past two years. “Sometimes things don’t have easy fixes,” said Mayo. “However, we’ve appreciated the progress and collaboration with St. Helena Hospital Clear Lake.”
The improvements have already created a better experience for elderly and disabled patients, which reduces stress while providing better access to care. “Where you had no access or were struggling with a barrier, that door is now open,” Mayo said of his experience. “Those with disabilities can get the care they need.”
Though the recognition was presented to Santos, Mayo emphasized that it is given with the greater good in mind. “It isn’t about David, the project manager, me or the local NAACP executive team,” he said. “It’s about the people we’re serving.”

UPPER LAKE, Calif. – A Friday evening fire attributed to a juvenile playing with fire did major damage to two homes in the Blue Lakes area west of Upper Lake.
The incident was first dispatched as a garage fire on Diane Lane just before 6:30 p.m. Friday, according to radio traffic.
Northshore Fire was first on scene, with Cal Fire and Lakeport Fire later responding to assist.
Shortly after firefighters first arrived on scene, they reported that the fire had spread from the first residence to a second one. Utility lines also were down, with the California Highway Patrol asked to help with traffic control, reports from the scene indicated.
Northshore Fire Chief Jay Beristianos reported over the radio that the fire was controlled at about 7:30 p.m., with several hours of mop up necessary.
Beristianos told Lake County News on Saturday that the fire started in the garage of the first residence and extended to the rest of the home, causing major damage.
In the second home – a vacation residence – firefighters were able to confine the fire to the attic, although that home also had major damage, Beristianos said.
The fire displaced three adults and one child from the first home, Beristianos said.
He said a family dog got out safely before the fire progressed much, with a second trapped and later found alive in a room that had only minor damage.
In addition to the canines, Beristianos said firefighters also were able to save the family's pet lizard.
He said the cause of the fire was determined to be a juvenile playing with fire in the garage of the first home, where the fire initially was reported.

KELSEYVILLE, Calif. – A boating accident that occurred on Saturday afternoon led to injuries for two people and the search for a third person.
Shortly before 2:30 p.m. Central Dispatch started fire units – including the Northshore Dive Team – to Braito's Marina in Buckingham on the report of a capsized boat nearby.
The initial dispatch reported that two people were injured and in the water, with a third person having disappeared.
Responding agencies included Kelseyville Fire, Lakeport Fire, Northshore Fire, Cal Fire and the Lake County Sheriff's Marine Patrol, according to radio reports.
As the two injured people were removed from the water, Cal Fire's Copter 104 responded to assist with the search for a 70-year-old man who had not been wearing a life jacket and was last seen just north of Anderson Island, based on reports from the scene.
A REACH air ambulance set down at around 3 p.m. at a landing zone set up at Buckingham Golf Course to pick up one of the injured boaters, radio reports indicated. About 20 minutes later the helicopter lifted off for Santa Rosa Memorial Hospital.
Radio reports indicated a second patient was taken by ground ambulance to Sutter Lakeside Hospital.
Shortly before 3:30 p.m., Copter 104 and Cal Fire units were released from the scene, and incident command was terminated just before 3:45 p.m.
Just after 5 p.m., the search for the missing man was continuing, Kelseyville Fire officials confirmed to Lake County News.
Lake County News attempted to contact Sheriff's Marine Patrol staff on Saturday regarding the search status but could not reach anyone.
Additional details will be posted as they become available.
