CLEAR LAKE STATE PARK, Calif. – No matter what time of year, the Clear Lake State Park is a special place to experience, but April has to be one of the best times.

Join Brad Barnwell on a one- or two-hour bird walk and experience spring in the park on Saturday, April 2, at 8:30 a.m.

Meet at the visitor center parking lot, bring your binoculars, hat, water and good, sturdy walking shoes and, since it is spring, bring mosquito repellant.

Entry into the park is free for those joining the walk. Rain cancels the walk.

There are still only a few people in the park in April and it is a good opportunity to see many of the migrating birds moving through the park on their trip north or those that have actually decided to make the park their seasonal home.

The ospreys are back and have started repairing the pole nest in the visitor center parking lot.

All of the local raptors have been paired off for some time and are putting the finishing touches on their nests.

The pileated woodpeckers have nests under construction and the wood ducks are paired off and scouring out potential nesting cavities.

Clear Lake State Park is located at 5300 Soda Bay Road, Kelseyville.

SOUTH COW MOUNTAIN, Calif. – The Bureau of Land Management will close the South Cow Mountain Off-Highway Vehicle Area to general recreation use and through traffic from Friday, April 1, through Sunday, April 3, to provide public safety during two motorcycle race events.

The North Bay Motorcycle Club has been granted an exclusive-use permit to use the trails throughout the OHV area for the Crosscut Family Enduro and Sawmill Enduro events.

As many as 200 riders per event are expected.

“With that many riders traveling at high rates of speed, we have to be as certain as we can be that no one accidentally gets onto the race course,” said BLM Ukiah Field Office Manager Rich Burns. “We are restricting access for the safety of both the participants and the public.”

The area will be reopened to the public on Sunday afternoon as soon as the last participant is off the course.

In the event of rain, the races and subsequent area closure will be postponed to April 8 through April 10.

Information about the enduro events is available from the North Bay Motorcycle Club: www.northbaymc.org/ .

For additional information about the Cow Mountain Recreation Area, contact the BLM Ukiah Field Office at (707) 468-4000.
