LOWER LAKE, Calif. – Guided nature walks followed by a tour of the historic ranch house museum are held on the second Saturday of each month at Anderson Marsh State Historic Park.
The next walk is scheduled for Saturday morning, May 11.
Spring wildflowers are still blooming and the birds and the bees are doing their “spring thing.”
Join them for a walk on the marsh and Cache Creek Trails at the park.
The nature walk will be led by park docents Gae Henry and Henry Bornstein. The tour of the historic ranch house museum will be held immediately after the walk.
Bring your binoculars and meet in front of the ranch house at 8:15 a.m. for time to experience the early morning wildlife to be found in the ranch house and barn complex yard. The walk begins at 8:30 a.m.
Anderson Marsh State Historic Park is located on Highway 53, between Lower Lake and Clearlake.

CLEARLAKE, Calif. – The United States Coast Guard (USCG) Auxiliary, Flotilla 88 of Lake County has been awarded a $1,500 grant from Wal-Mart for the purchase of life jackets to be given away to children on Saturday May 18.
This is the ninth year that the Flotilla has held this life jacket giveaway project and which Wal-Mart has contributed support to this project.
The free life jacket giveaway will be held at Redbud Park Marina located in Clearlake starting at 10 a.m.
All children must be accompanied by their parent or guardian who will be requested to complete a form indicating their full name, child’s name, phone number or e-mail.
The child will be weighed, fitted for the proper size and instructed in the correct way to wear the jacket and how to take care of it.
The life jackets are free and supplies are limited.
Also, Flotilla 88 vessel examiners will be holding free vessel exams for boat owners at the marina on May 18. The vessels can be in the water or on a trailer.
The owners will receive important information regarding safety on the water. Boat owners whose vessel passes the exam may apply for discount on their boat insurance.

COBB, Calif. – Join the Friends of Boggs Mountain docents Darlene Hecomovich and Peg Landini on a fascinating bird hike at 9 a.m. Saturday, May 11, at Boggs Mountain Demonstration State Forest.
Identifying birds in the forest can be more challenging than backyard birding, but the rewards are great.
They will be looking and listening for a variety of birds – the violet-green swallows and Western Bluebirds that are using nest boxes, the six species of warblers that appear in the spring, and the spectacular black-headed grosbeaks and spotted towhees.
Always popular and fun to hear and see are the raucous acorn and pileated woodpeckers.
If you haven’t already discovered the joy of birding, now is a good time to start. Birders of all levels are welcome to observe and delight in the variety of bird life found at Boggs. There will be a limited number of binoculars available to loan for those who do not have a pair.
The hike will be moderately-paced at two miles, and should take approximately two hours. Wear sturdy shoes, dress appropriately for weather conditions, water and enthusiasm.
Meet at the Boggs parking lot kiosk promptly at 9 a.m.
The forest entrance is located off Highway 175 just one and a half miles north of Cobb Village.
Turn at the blue Fire Station/Boggs Mountain Forest sign.

HIDDEN VALLEY LAKE, Calif. – The HVL Men’s Niners Golf Club held a two-man team Pinehurst Tournament on Thursday, May 2.
The results were:
- “A” Flight: The teams of Jim Brown/Jim Wilson, Don Dornbush/Jim Stratton and Fred Figg/Jeff Markham tied for top honors with net 33.
- “B” Flight: Jim Hodges/Jay Hodges scored the lowest net of the round, 30. Olie Smith/Bob Costello was second, 31 and Dennis Day/Hal Weber third, 32.
Closest to the Par 3 Pins were Bob Brossier and Jerry Tamura.
Fifty-two men (26 teams) participated in this event.
