NORTH COAST, Calif. – The Mensa Scholarship Program is open to anyone who will be attending college or graduate school in the United States during the academic year 2014-15
The deadline to apply is Jan. 15, 2014. The fine print notes that applications are due by 11:59 p.m. Central Standard Time.
The scholarship program bases awards entirely on essays written by applicants. No consideration is given to grades or financial need.
Scholarship amounts vary from $300 to $1,000, and essays are submitted online at http://www.mensafoundation.org/scholarships .
Within Redwood Empire Mensa, they will have at least two scholarship awards, the Chod Harris Scholarship ($500) and one of two other scholarships ($300).
In addition, local winners and other applicants are considered automatically for regional and national scholarships with amounts ranging up to $1,000.
Applicants need not be Mensa members, but there are some additional scholarships awarded solely to members.
While many scholarships are unrestricted as to field of study or level of post secondary education, other scholarships are awarded for study in particular fields, such as aeronautics/aerospace, fine arts, liberal arts, journalism, mathematics, mediation, teaching writing and graduate study in history.
Applicants need not know for sure where they will be attending college/graduate/professional school in 2014-15.
They must be planning to enroll (or continue) in an accredited program, but if they don’t yet know
where they may be accepted, they can still apply for scholarships.
The foundation verifies enrollment in an accredited program (full time/part time) during the academic year 2014-15 and sends checks directly to scholarship winners.

NORTH COAST, Calif. – The Mendocino College Foundation Inc. has planned its executive committee meeting schedule for 2014.
All of the meetings will begin at 3 p.m. in the Visual & Performing Arts building lobby on the Mendocino College Ukiah campus, 1000 Hensley Creek Road.
The public is welcome to attend.

CLEARLAKE, Calif. – Yuba College announces and welcomes new faculty member, Billy Gear.
Gear will be teaching in the Philosophy Department.
During the spring semester he will teach the philosophy course World Religions.
“We are delighted to have an instructor on our campus who has so much to offer to our students,” said Yuba College Dean Artemio Pimentel.
Gear earned a bachelor of arts from Sonoma State University and a master of arts in philosophy from San Jose State University.
He has taught in the Santa Rosa Junior College Philosophy Department for six years and lived in Lake County for 12 years.
Gear is an active docent in the local state parks and involved with Lake County Children's Museum of Art and Science (CMAS) doing among other things teaching Lego Robotics to youth around the county.
Gear is excited to teach at the college level in Lake County.
“I think philosophy starts with curiosity, involving everything from physics to metaphysics, and art to ethics,” he said. “It gives us tools to explore abstract ideas as well as to deal with everyday issues in an effort to improve ourselves, our families and our community.”
He added, “This semester we will be applying this curiosity and exploration as we learn about some major religions of the world. We will take an objective look at their similarities and differences, and also attempt to gain some subjective appreciation of individual experience. I am excited about the opportunity to teach and share ideas here in Lake County.”

LAKE COUNTY, Calif. – Congratulations to the recent graduates of the Certified Nurse Assistant Program offered through the Lake County Office of Education Career & College Readiness Department.
On Thursday, Dec. 20, students, families and staff gathered at the new training center in Clearlake to celebrate the course completion of six students.
This session’s graduates include Elizabeth Cornell, Denisse Herrera, Julia Johnson, Taylor McKissick, Katelin Miles and James Ramirez.
Brock Falkenberg, senior director for student services and human resources for the Lake County Office of Education, addressed the students with words of wisdom and encouraged them to strive for success as they enter the medical field.
Instructor Shirley Hardy presented the certificates to the students and raved about the natural compassion of this small group.
A new CNA class will be starting on Feb. 24, 2014.
The 13-week course will take place at the LCOE Workforce Training & Career Center located at 14092 Lakeshore Drive in Clearlake on Monday and Wednesday evenings and Saturdays.
