UKIAH, Calif. – A scholarship has been established in the memory of a longtime North Coast couple who were active in the community.

“The late Harry and Joan Bistrin would be pleased to know that deserving Mendocino College students will receive their named scholarship in perpetuity,” said Wilda Shock, a past president of the Mendocino College Foundation board of directors.

The Bistrins, longtime Ukiah residents, served at varying times as members of the Mendocino College Foundation board of directors and were loyal and generous supporters of Mendocino College.

Shock noted that she had the opportunity to work closely with both Harry and Joan and felt privileged to have their kindness, financial support and knowledge benefit the foundation board.

“Harry and Joan were staunch advocates of education and they knew firsthand the value of earning a college degree,” she said.

Harry Bistrin was a well-known political figure, having served as local representative for several North Coast legislators, and a civic leader who cared about education, health care, women’s rights and the arts.

The Mendocino College Foundation recently received a gift from the Bistrin estate and along with other in-memoriam contributions, the $1,000 per year Bistrin Scholarship has been established in perpetuity.

This year’s recipient will be chosen in the coming months and celebrated at the foundation’s scholarship ceremony on May 16.

Carlé Chronicle: Hazmat students get certifications

Credit checks are coming up this Monday. Carlé either gives a full report card or a class to class credit check every three weeks helping students stay on top of their progress and needs. Use the credit checks to make sure you are on your way to earning what you want this grading period.

Congratulations to the students who got Hazardous Materials First Responder Operations certified with Angie Siegel, and welcome back to the regular schedule!

Those that got certified did so by taking the hazmat class with Siegel and passing the certification test. The certification will look great in your resume, so don’t forget to include it.

The students who attended the hazmat class were the following: Ariel Bordessa, Sarah Terry, Chenoa Schmidt, Lukas Carlson, Chelsea Schloesser, Troy Lamburth, Kasandra Colwell, Jay Brown, Kelly Alvarez, Ty Ty Beasley, Kevin Fisher, Summer Gunn, Dane Quintana-Pearson, Cody Perdock, Chris Stutz, Amaree Whiley and Lucas Stickel.

The course went over multiple aspects of being part of first responder operations such as the method in which we should approach a hazardous material incident, how to identify what a tanker is carrying judging by the placards, and how to decontaminate people that have been in contact with hazardous materials.

On Jan. 16, the hazmat students all went to the local firehouse and met the Lake County HazMat team leader Mark Hill. He answered any questions the students had, whether it be about hazmat first responder operations or asking more about what he does as a specialist.

He showed the students many different gadgets he uses in the field such as Draeger tubes, Chameleon wristband, CGIs, the Heintz five-step chemical analysis and the decon drill.

The students then had the opportunity to suit up in level A and level B hazmat personal protective equipment and participate in a faux decontamination drill.

The Carlé Chronicle would like to give a shout out and thank you to Captain Willie Sapeta for making this all possible.

The hazmat class is highly beneficial and gives students an extra advantage in applying for jobs with the certification. The class is extremely valuable and it’s free of charge to the students.  Those who were not in the class this year should definitely consider taking it next year.

The Carlé Chronicle would like to give a warm welcome back to Guein Bouscal.  All of the students are very excited to see her back. Her new job title is student management assistant.

Bouscal will now be in charge of making sure everybody is on task in class, she will help the students one on one if needed, and she will be supervising the campus at break and lunch.

“I said I’d be back the first chance I got, and now I’m back! This is where my heart is and I hope I never have to leave again. With my new title I can officially be there for all of you,” Bouscal told students.

Congratulations to Ty Ty Beasley for getting student of the week! Enjoy your free small pizza from DJ’s Pizza in Lower Lake, front of the lunch line pass and free item from the school business. Ty Ty is a great student. It is about time she has gotten student of the week because she’s been nominated three weeks in a row!

The last CHILY winner was Christopher Stutz who chose a purple fleece blanket.

The next gold level trip is coming up and it will be a trip to Scandia for those who earned gold level during the second and/or third grading period.

The students will have the opportunity to do any of the activities available at Scandia as many times as they’d like. What a fun reward this trip will be!

Remember the goals you have made and stay true to them! If the credits you have left are not satisfactory to you, take charge to make it better! Keep up the hard work!
