Ayers joins Westlake teaching staff

LAKEPORT, Calif. – The board of Westlake Seventh-day Adventist School has announced that they have a new teacher, Shirley Ayers.


Ayers has several years of teaching experience, with the last nine years here in Lake County at various school districts.


She is excited to be here and brings a new vision and lots of energy to the school.


Registration will be held on Thursday, Aug. 18, from 2 to 6 pm. at the school and the school year will start on Aug. 29.


Westlake Seventh-day Adventist School is located at 6585 Westlake Road, Lakeport.

Charter school plans Aug. 27 open house

MIDDLETOWN, Calif. – Lake County International Charter School will hold an open house on Saturday, Aug. 27.


The open house will take place from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the school, 15850 Armstrong St., Middletown.


Come on out an join in the fun – including gardening and art activities, a scavenger hunt, live music, games, food, drinks and more.


School starts on Tuesday, Aug. 30.


Lake County International Charter School is a free public school.

Lodge at Blue Lakes offers scholarships to Academic Decathletes

UPPER LAKE, Calif. – The Lodge at Blue Lakes is committed to the development of youth in academics while supporting local communities through the Academic Decathlon.


Last year, the lodge provided college scholarships in the amount of $250 for top-scoring student at each participating school in Lake and Mendocino counties.


Congratulations to Elizabeth Perkins of Lower Lake High, Francisco Sandoval of Middletown High, David Stansberry of Willits High, Rebecca Swaney of Upper Lake High and Shao-Jia Chang of Clear Lake High, who received the scholarships.


The Lodge at Blue Lakes will continue to be a major sponsor of the Academic Decathlon.

LCOE offers workshop for prospective school board trustee candidates

LAKEPORT, Calif. – In anticipation of the upcoming vacancies on district school boards throughout the county, as well as the Lake County Board of Education, the Lake County Office of Education is hosting a workshop/orientation for prospective candidates.


The workshop will take place on Monday, Aug. 8, at 6 p.m. at the Lake County Office of Education, 1152 S. Main St., Lakeport.


“If you’ve ever wondered how you can be more involved in our schools, running for a seat on one of our school boards is a great way to make a difference,” said Lake County Superintendent of Schools Wally Holbrook. “This workshop is designed for individuals interested in running, but who may need more information to make that decision.”


The agenda will include information on the role of a board member, brown act review, and major areas of responsibility.


Additionally, a panel of experienced board members will share their knowledge and advice.


Even though this workshop is designed for interested potential board members, seated board members are also welcome to attend.


Following is a list of Lake County school board vacancies:


  • Kelseyville Unified School Districts: Three vacancies, four-year terms.

  • Lake County Board of Education: Trustee Area No. 1, one vacancy, four-year term; Trustee Area No. 2: one vacancy, four-year term.

  • Lakeport Unified School District: Three vacancies, four-year terms.

  • Lucerne Elementary School Board: One vacancy, four-year term.

  • Upper Lake Union Elementary School District: Two vacancies, four-year terms


Candidate filing documents will be available at the Lake County Registrar of Voters through Aug. 12.
