UKIAH, Calif. – The beautiful blue skies and lush green hillsides were the backdrop to Mendocino College’s annual staff appreciation barbecue.

Held on Tuesday, April 30, the end-of-year luncheon included the recognition of this year’s retirees and classified staff who go above and beyond on behalf of students.

This year’s classified staff honorees included Gregory Byard, instructional assistant, ceramics; Lana Eberhard, marketing program specialist; Naoto Horiguchi, athletic trainer; Susan Orozco, assistive technology/alternative media specialist; Cindey Parker, accounting technician; and Dean Vickers, biology laboratory technician.

President Arturo Reyes and College Trustee Joan Ericksen recognized five staff members who are retiring this year. Collectively they represent over 115 years of employment at Mendocino College.

They are Candie Dickinson, Counseling; Betty Antoni, Human Resources; Mark Rawitsch, Dean of Instruction for Willits and Lakeport; Charles Duffy, Institutional Research; and Paula Gray, art professor.

The biggest event of all is coming up on May 10, the Carlé Black-n-White Prom.

The big event is on its way and we’re all very excited! It will be held at Carlé, the tickets are $6 and presale only so make sure you buy your ticket from Secretary Barbara Dye ASAP.

Prom will be semi-formal so make sure to dress up but not too much, and finally there will be several activities to keep you occupied aside from music and dancing.

Our custodian Gary will be hosting card games throughout the night and winners will receive actual prizes so make sure you give the game a try.

Also teacher Alan Siegel will have video games going on his room with some special help thanks to student Camari Onwuasoeze.

Prom will be a huge event and we really want to see as many people there as we possibly can so come on out and support your school Carlé students, and have a bit of fun too!

Open house is getting closer. It is coming up on May 9. Everyone who can come, please do. The event begins at 5:30 p.m. and it is a potluck so please bring a food item with you to share. Every single student that attends will receive extra credit.

For you that don’t already know Open House is Carlé's chance to show off what it’s like to attend our school to parents and let teachers interact one on one with parents to give them as much insight as possible. It’s the chance to get a lot of information you might not be able to get otherwise, and the chance to eat some good food as well. We hope to see you there.

All of the Carlé designers are very, very busy at work creating all different kinds of plaques.

First off there are the Carlé senior plaques which will add up to at least 25 graduating seniors receiving their very own customized plaque. On top of that we’ve been contacted by school likes Lewis to help create plaques for their seniors as well and a couple of other special projects. So all of the Carlé designers really have their hands full!

Thankfully we have some great students here at Carlé so even though there is a lot to do with only a short amount of time, we’re not intimidated.

With that said I’d like to give a thanks to each and every Carlé designer, new and old, that has been such a big help during the easy times and the hard times. You’re a part of what makes Carlé what it is.

James Mora had his portfolio this last Thursday, May 2. James has been at Carlé the past two years and has excelled in sports as well as academics. We’re very happy to see him graduate even though that means leaving Carlé. James is among the proud seniors this year and he certainly deserves everything he has gotten thus far. Congratulations James!

This last week was the start of the sixth grading period which means there is only five weeks of school left to go! These five weeks will fly by very fast so make sure that you use this time wisely, especially if you hope to be a graduating senior this year.

Again, this isn’t the time to slack off and relax – that time is when school is over – so use this time you have to its full extent. Always try your hardest to succeed.

Student of the Week this last week was Carlé student Roxie Purdum-White. Roxie is another student who came just last year, but ever since she’s been here she’s worked hard and diligently. Going from school to a job is not easy but nevertheless Roxie does it with a smile on her face. Congratulations to you Roxie, you deserve it.

Carlé's van project is still going on and so far we’ve collected $1,750. Although this is a lot of money and we’re very grateful to have it, unfortunately it does not make us very close to our goal, which has now been raised to $60,000. The recent raise in funds is because of the necessity of two vans instead of just one.

We’ve figured out that only one van would not be enough to house all of the students we need it to. If any one would like to donate to our van fun please contact 707-994-1033. We’d be most grateful for any of your help of any kind to our fund. Thanks to all that have and will help.

A very big happy birthday goes out to our amazing superhero secretary Barbara Dye! Barbara is always such a big help and consistently goes above and beyond the call of duty every single day.

Barbara’s birthday was this last Monday, April 29. Thanks so much for everything you do for us Barbara and we all hope you had a great birthday and continue to have many more great ones.

Mendocino College Foundation Scholarship discusses plans

NORTH COAST, Calif. – Ukiah High graduate Caitlyn Hallman was one of 38 students to win a $1,500 Mendocino College Foundation Academic Excellence Scholarship last Spring.

Hallman explained that she received $750 at the beginning of the Fall 2012 semester, and the other $750 at the beginning of the Spring 2013 semester.

“The money has been so helpful,” she said. “I used it to pay for my units and also my textbooks, which are extremely expensive.”

Hallman, who is in her second year at Mendocino College, has finished all the general education requirements for transfer to a four-year college. She is now working on the prerequisites for entrance into a nursing program.

While she would love to be accepted into the Mendocino College nursing program, she is also considering nursing programs at Sonoma State University and Santa Rosa Junior College.

To begin preparing for her future career, she plans to enroll in the Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) training, sponsored by the local chapter of the American Red Cross, during the summer of 2013.

“With a CNA, I will be able to work in a doctor’s office or a hospital to help pay for my nursing education,” she said.

Hallman said that she loves the beautiful campus at MC, and she is delighted by the “awesome” professors.

“The profs here actually spend one-on-one time with their students. I have a friend who goes to college in Arizona where there are 300 students in a class! She does not ever get individual time with her professors. We are so lucky here, where the professors are enthusiastic about their work and really care about their students. In my two years at MC, I have not had a bad prof yet!” she said.

Hallman's interest in the health field began while in high school when she took first aid and CPR classes offered by the city of Ukiah. Her training and quick thinking helped save a life while she was traveling with a group of Ukiah High Spanish language students in Portugal.

“A man had fallen near the edge of a cliff and hit his head on a rock,” she explained. “He was taking blood thinners and was bleeding profusely. The teacher, Ezra Post, noticed and ran toward him. I grabbed the first aid kit out of the bus and followed. There was not much in the first aid kit except gauze, so another student and I used that to wrap and compress the wound to stop the bleeding. It took a full 40 minutes for the emergency personnel to arrive. We just used basic first aid, but he would have bled to death in that time without assistance.”

She and her classmate received the American Red Cross Youth Good Samaritan Award in recognition of their courage and resourcefulness. “I still hear from that man,” she said, smiling.

Hallman believes most people would be surprised to learn that she was a national champion roller skater at age 14. “After that, I retired from skating,” she said.

Hallman volunteers at a local nursing home as a companion to a 95-year-old lady “who was one of my favorite customers when I worked at BeBop's.”

She also helps the Kiwanis Club with volunteer activities, such as serving at Plowshares and delivering gifts for the Christmas effort. Hallman says her mother, Jordis, the past-president of Kiwanis, has made it easy and fun for her to help out.

In her free time Hallman enjoys playing guitar and crocheting.
