Yuba College plans ribbon cutting for grand reopening of library

MARYSVILLE, Calif. – The Yuba College Learning Resources Center/Library is reopening on Jan. 13, the first day of the spring 2014 semester, after a 2.5 year extensive renovation.

To celebrate, a ribbon cutting ceremony will be held in the library foyer on Thursday, Jan. 16, at 3 p.m.

Everyone is invited; light refreshments will be served and following the ceremony, guided tours will be given.

The refurbished building houses the adjunct faculty resource center; College Success Center; fine arts and language arts dean and the instructional television classroom; the journalism program, language arts faculty offices; library and cyber lab; mass communications classes; media services offices; training center; and writing and language development center.

The new 44,262-square-foot, $14 Million, Learning Resource Center will be a haven for spring semester students in need of a quiet, learning-driven atmosphere. The cost for the project is shared equally by the Yuba Community college District Measure J Bond Project and the state of California.

The foyer features a new color pallet and the contemporary lighting design. This area has movable furniture making it suitable for artist receptions and special events.

The area also has a café-style data bank where students can connect their mobile devices and laptops for online research.

Upstairs, where the books are housed, there also is soft, movable seating so that students can sit and review their materials prior to checking them out.

Moving into the College Success Center where the majority of the tutoring takes place there will be numerous computer stations and quiet study and meeting rooms so that tutoring can occur in the most optimal environment.

In consultation with the Japanese American League (JAL), a reinvigorated Japanese garden area has been identified.

The location of the previous garden was in an area that was not central to the student’s path of travel; the new location, on the east side of the building, is connected to one of the main entrances and will be a popular thorough- fare for students therefore giving more visibility to the beautiful testament to a long-standing community partnership.

The instructional television and distance education portion of the building will become the central hub for transmitting e-learning classes.

There is a state-of-the-art control room, sound locks which will provide acoustic isolation and a video editing room.

There also are computer training rooms where staff and students can work in a collaborative environment to complete specified training and instructional needs.

The improved library has also expanded its hours. Spring semester hours are 7:45 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Thursday, and 7:45 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. for students and the community.

The library is located at 2088 N. Beale Road, Marysville. There is no charge to park.
