Community

LAKEPORT – Lake County Community Co-op invites the community to the Spring Fling on Saturday, May 8.

The fling will take place from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Leonardis Organics, 1010 Argonaut Road, Lakeport.

The second annual Spring Fling promises to gather community together in an atmosphere of good food and healthy activities to celebrate the warmer temperatures and the return of sunny skies.

The Spring Fling is one of many ways the Lake County Community Cooperative brings to life it's motto“Cultivating an Evolving Community.”

Activities will include games, dancing to live music, May pole frivolity and assisting the planting a hedgerow.

The food will be potluck, so think about food that is local, healthy, enjoyable and in season. Then, let your imagination go wild.

To maintain an atmosphere of eco-consciousness, the co-op requests that you bring your own plate, cloth napkin, utensils, cup or glass, and a serving utensil.

The gathering also will be a great place to learn more about the co-op and to meet the people that make the Co-op a vibrant and evolving community.

Ongoing co-op projects include the Friday Night Farmers' Market, Community Supported Agriculture weekly produce boxes, the buying club, community gardens and the education series “Lake County Community Co-op Presents.”

To learn more about these and other co-op activities, go to www.lakeco-op.org.

The CSA box for April 22 contained artichokes, English peas, spinach, grapefruit, baby lettuce, sweet potatoes, oranges and chard/arugula mix. All produce included in the box is organic.

There are currently nine drop sites in Lake County, assuring you a site near your community. The cost is $15 per box, paid monthly. Annual membership dues are $24/year.

The Spring Fling, like all co-op gatherings, is free and open to the public. Bring a dish that you are inspired to share. And, don't forget your dancing shoes.

For more information, contact Janine Smith Citron at 707-277-8208 or the co-op at 707-993-4270.

CLEARLAKE – The Lake County Community Co-op's (LCCC) drop point expansion efforts continue.

The drop points, where members can pick up boxes of fresh produce weekly, has recently increased to ten with the inclusion of Bikram Yoga of Lake County, located at 11445 Clayton Creek Road (off Highway 29) in Lower Lake.

They will begin as a drop point in May, as will Darling's Vitamin Connection, located at 3965, Suite 1, Main Street in Kelseyville.

Darling's will replace the Lake Family Resource Center as the drop point for Kelseyville.

“The community's effort to support a local food system is truly inspiring,” said LCCC Chair JoAnn Saccato.

Residents may now pick up weekly boxes in the newly added Lower Lake drop point, as well as the existing drop points in Clearlake, Clearlake Oaks, Lucerne, Upper Lake, Lakeport, Kelseyville, Cobb, Hidden Valley and Middletown.

The new drop points, open between 5 p.m. and 7 p.m. on Thursdays, begin May 6.

For more information on how to order from the co-op, or become a drop point, go to www.lakeco-op.org or call Hileri Shand at 707-995-9054.

Annual membership fees for the co-op are $24 and the CSA boxes are $15 each, paid on a monthly basis. The co-op sources the all-organic CSA boxes first from Lake County farmers, then regionally and beyond from farmers and distributors.

In addition, members can purchase locally baked organic breads from Main Street Bakery in Kelseyville to include in their weekly box.

The co-op's intention is to help support a more sustainable food system through local and organic food sourcing. The co-op is celebrating over two years in existence and envisions cultivating an evolving community by nurturing values of social, economic and environmental responsibility. For more information go to www.lakeco-op.org or call 707-993-4270.

LAKEPORT – Friday night is all right for dancing and singing and playing and even pogo sticking.

Put on your “Boogie Shoes” and come on down to the Marge Alakszay Center at 350 Lange St. in Lakeport at 7 p.m. Friday, May 7, to enjoy “Friday Night Fever,” the Terrace Middle School eighth grade class' annual variety show/silent auction fundraiser.

This isn’t your typical talent show. This year, the students are participating in a spoof of “American Idol,” the 70s version.

Enjoy the “Dancing Queens” and “King Tuts” of Terrace School performing disco tunes while enduring the critiques of “Simon,” “Randy” and “Paula,” with “Ryan” there to keep the show moving at a fast and fun pace, so the audience will be “Stayin’ Alive” instead of snoozing.

And expect the unexpected from the silent and live auctions. Sure they’ll be front row seats for eighth grade graduation to be auctioned off, and the fundraising game of “Heads or Tails” is sure to bring lots of laughs as well as an amazing prize to the winner.

But “Imagine” bidding on a day on the lake and wakeboard lessons from the talented Mr. Figg?

This is sure to be a fun night not only for the participants, but the audience as well. What could be

better than supporting the students at Terrace School, while having a good time yourself?

So make sure you “Get Down, Tonight” on Friday, May 7, in the MAC. And keep a look out for the “Disco Duck.”

Reserved seats for $7.50 are available for pre-sale in the Terrace Middle School office. General admission tickets for $5 a piece also are available at the school office and Linda’s Hallmark, and at the door on the night of the performance.

The evening includes a meal of pork carnita tacos or cheese enchiladas, rice, beans, chips and salsa, dessert and beverage.

There also will be a raffle, silent auction, and dancing to music and visual effects provided by DJ Novel.

The cost for the evening is $20 for the dinner and dance, or $10 for the dance only.

For more information call 707-972-9005.
