Grandmaster-trained chess expert Thomas Southerland is the guest educator at this series. Southerland has written articles for the prestigious European Chess Web site, www.chessdom.com, and also for the Official U.S. Chess Federation Website, http://uschess.org.
Southerland had two games from the Chicago Open 1996 published in the official magazine of the USCF, “Chesslife,” for their brilliance according to Life Master Jerry Hanken.
He also has organized and sponsored the first-ever Online Grand Master Chess Event at Internet Chess Club in 1996, and has remained active partners in organizing and promoting Grand Master Chess Events with ICC to this day.
Southerland has interviewed for radio, Grandmasters Var Akobian, Yury Shulman (2008 U.S. Champion) and Israeli Grandmaster Victor Mikhalevski, and was promoted by Grandmaster Susan Polgar (Former Women's World Champion) during his last event.
He organized the two-day multiple rapid chess matches between Grandmasters Var Akobian and Yury Shulman held in April 2009 at the Lake County Wine Studio and is currently working to organize his next major chess event to be held in beautiful Lake County in the early summer of 2011.
Southerland offers insight into strategy fundamentals of end, middle and opening games to help players improve their games.

UPPER LAKE, Calif. – Shannon Michele of Cache Creek Catering and Lake County Wine Studio are presenting a monthly food and wine series featuring locally produced foods paired with select Lake County Wines.
The series is held from 5:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. on the second Friday of each month. The per person cost is $15 and reservations are required.
April’s event featured Rhone varietals with Shannon Ridge 2008 Roussanne paired with an arugula / mozzarella salad with Lemon Vinaigrette and Main Street Bakery crouton.
Sol Rouge’s Gypsy Rouge (a red blend of Grenache, Mourvèdre, Syrah and Petite Sirah) was paired with Shannon Ranch Clover-fed Lamb kebobs with rosemary, garlic and balsamic drizzle.
May’s event will feature Bordeaux varietals opening with Dusinberré Cellars Malbec paired with seasonal greens, cherry-glazed chicken and toasted almonds, followed by a roasted garlic bisque with Main St. Bakery crouton and Gruyere paired with Dusinberré Petite Verdot, and concludes with a dark chocolate mousse and lavender-dusted chocolate strawberry.
Additional wines will be available for purchase by the taste or by the glass.

The meeting will begin at 1 p.m. at the Clear Lake Riviera Community Association, 9689 Soda Bay Road, Kelseyville.
There will be a light potluck and the showing of a video of a KMEC fundraiser with antiwar activity Cindy Sheehan and Mendocino County Supervisor Dan Hamburg. Yard Sale plans also will be discussed.

NORTH COAST – Caltrans reports that the following road projects will be taking place around Lake County during the coming week.
Included are Mendocino County projects that may impact Lake County commuters.
LAKE COUNTY
Highway 20
– Installation of rumble strips from the Lake/Mendocino County line to Mendenhall Avenue will continue. Work hours are 6 a.m. to 7 a.m., weekdays. One-way traffic control will be in effect. Motorists should anticipate 20-minute delays. Contractor – Traffic Solutions of Redding.
– Slide repairs west of Gravel Plant Road will continue. Work hours are 7 a.m. to 5 a.m., weekdays. One-way traffic control will be in effect. Motorists should anticipate five-minute delays. Contractor – Figas Construction of Eureka.
Highway 29
– Metal beam guardrail repair at various locations from 0.9 mile north of Spruce Grove Road to the Kelsey Creek Bridge will begin Monday, May 10. Work hours are 8 a.m. to 4 a.m., weekdays. One-way traffic control will be in effect. Motorists should anticipate five-minute delays. Contractor – Stewart Dirt and Aggregate of Fairfield.
MENDOCINO COUNTY
Highway 1
– Slide repair near the Schooner Gulch Bridge will continue. Work hours are 7 a.m. to 5 a.m., weekdays. One-way traffic control will be in effect. Motorists should anticipate five-minute delays. Contractor – Mendocino Construction Services of Willits.
– CS/F Productions of Venice has been granted a Caltrans Encroachment Permit for commercial filming from Sea Cypress Drive to Comptche Ukiah Road on Monday, May 9. Work hours are 5 a.m. to 10 a.m. One-way traffic control will be in effect. Motorists should anticipate five-minute delays.
– Storm damage repairs near the Union Landing Viaduct began Friday, May 6. Work hours are 6 a.m. to 5 a.m., weekdays. One-way traffic control will be in effect. Motorists should anticipate five-minute delays. Contractor – Valentine Corp. of San Rafael.
Highway 20
– Highway widening from 2.3 to 3.3 miles east of Gravel Pit Road will continue. Work hours are 7 a.m. to 4:30 a.m., weekdays. One-way traffic control will be in effect. Motorists should anticipate five-minute delays. Contractor – Team Ghilotti Inc. of Petaluma.
– Installation of rumble strips from the eastern Cold Creek Bridge to the Lake/Mendocino County line will continue. Work hours are 6 a.m. to 7 a.m., weekdays. One-way traffic control will be in effect. Motorists should anticipate 20-minute delays. Contractor – Traffic Solutions of Redding.
Highway 101
– A pavement repair project from the Robinson Creek Bridge to Uva Drive will continue. Traffic will be restricted to one lane in each direction of travel 24 hours per day from 8 a.m. Sunday through 3 a.m. Friday. Motorists may experience minor traffic slowdowns. Northbound ramps at Calpella (Exit 555A) and Route 20 (Exit 555B) as well as southbound ramps at Route 20 (Exit 555B) will be intermittently closed. Motorists will be advised to use an alternate route and may experience minor delays. Contractor – Granite Construction Inc. of Ukiah.
– Repair of a slipout from Reeves Canyon Road to Ridgewood Ranch Road will continue. Traffic will be restricted to one lane in each direction of travel 24 hours per day, seven days per week. Motorists may experience minor traffic slowdowns. Contractor – Granite Construction Inc. of Ukiah.
– Installation of rumble strips from Big Trails Drive to the Ten Mile Creek Bridge will continue. Work hours are 6 a.m. to 7 a.m., weekdays. Traffic will be restricted to one lane in each direction of travel. Motorists may experience minor traffic slowdowns. Contractor – Traffic Solutions of Redding.
Highway 128
– CS/F Productions of Venice has been granted a Caltrans Encroachment Permit for commercial filming from 1.0 mile east of the junction of Route 1/128 to Wendling Soda Creek Road on Monday, May 9. Work hours are 5 a.m. to 10 a.m. One-way traffic control will be in effect. Motorists should anticipate 5-minute delays. LC#P128AA
– Slipout repairs 1.2 miles east of Big Oaks Drive will continue. One-way traffic control with a temporary signal will be in effect 24 hours per day, seven days per week. Motorists should anticipate five-minute delays. Contractor – Team Ghilotti of Petaluma.
Highway 222
– Replacement of the Russian River Bridge will continue. Work hours are 7 a.m. to 5 a.m., weekdays. One-way traffic control with a temporary signal will be in effect 24 hours per day, seven days per week. Motorists should anticipate 15-minute delays during work hours and five-minute delays at other times. Contractor – CC Myers of Rancho Cordova.
