MENDOCINO COUNTY, Calif. – Caltrans said Wednesday that a portion of Highway 101 will be under traffic control and speed reduction through the summer due to a landslide.

The area of Highway 101 impacted is five miles north of the Mendocino-Sonoma County line, just north of the Korean War Veterans Memorial Bridge (post mile 5.0) and near the large rock outcropping that's also known as “Lover's Leap.”

Caltrans said traffic has been reduced to one lane in each direction of travel 24 hours per day, seven days per week, with a reduced speed of 25 miles per hour in response to rough road conditions caused by a slide.

Those special conditions will remain in effect until summer when the hillside dries out and crews can grind and repave the highway, Caltrans reported.

LAKEPORT, Calif. – The Clear Lake High School Scholarship Club has scheduled a scholarship fair to be held on Friday, March 25, at 6:30 p.m. at Lakeport's Clear Lake High School (in room 122).

The fair will give local organizations that provide scholarships with an opportunity to present their programs and purpose to college bound students.

“Many students struggle with finding motivation to apply for scholarships, while many organizations get limited applications,” according to the group’s president, Rebecca Baker. “It would be inspirational for us, the students, to hear the purpose of a scholarship and its history, as well as information about the organization from the people who founded and support the program. This may in turn encourage more comprehensive and enthusiastic applications.”

The March 25 lineup includes the Lake County Historical Society and the Lake County Association of Realtors. “We still have room for a few more presentations in the fair so if your organization is interested in participating now or at a later date please contact me.”

The Scholarship Fair is open to all Lake County students who are interested in scholarships.

MIDDLETOWN, Calif. – A glimpse into the early history of the Stone House, constructed in 1853 as headquarters for the Rancho Guenoc and the Rancho Callayomi (which became home to Middletown) will be presented at the Tuesday, April 5, meeting of the Stone House Historical Society.

The meeting opens at 10 a.m. in the activity room at the Hidden Valley Lake Association offices, and is open to all.

Non-residents of Hidden Valley Lake can simply leave their names at the Hartmann Road gate and give their destination as the Stone House.

Brief profiles of the several men who claimed the two Spanish land grants, the man credited with construction of the Stone House and a few of its subsequent owners will be highlighted.

Nina Bouska’s talk also will include bits about the village of Guenoc, which sprang up in the 1860s near Putah Creek and was essentially abandoned when most of its population moved to newly founded Middletown in the early 1870s.

The program was originally scheduled in February but had to be postponed at the last minute.

The meeting, which begins at 1 p.m., will take place at McDonald's on Todd Road in Lakeport.

CLEARLAKE, Calif. – The Lake County Rockhounds meets at 6 p.m. on the first Wednesday of each month at the Redbud Library, 14785 Burns Valley Road in Clearlake.

The Lake County Rockhounds is a club for lovers of gemology, mineralogy, lapidary, rocks and fossils.
