New tutor training scheduled for Library Literacy Program

Details

Published: 22 January 2026

LAKE COUNTY, Calif. — The Lake County Library Literacy Program will host its first new tutor training for 2026 on Saturday, Jan. 31.

It will be held at the Lakeport Library, 1425 N. High St. in Lakeport.

The training is free and will take place from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Light snacks and refreshments will be provided, along with training materials at no cost.

Tutors are in high demand at the Library Literacy Program, with more volunteer tutors needed in the Clearlake area, bilingual in Spanish for the English as a Second Language Program, tutors available and willing to tutor at the Lake County Jail, and tutors willing to tutor adults with developmental disabilities.

Hosted by Literacy Program Coordinator, Georgina Marie Guardado, and facilitated by Lake County Literacy Coalition Board Member Pam Klier, participants will learn useful techniques for teaching adults to read and write.

No experience is needed, and ongoing support and workshops are provided for tutors. Upon completion of the training, tutors will be matched with adult learners in a variety of settings around the county.

Those who would like to help adults improve their literacy skills are encouraged to attend.

A recent Survey of Adult Skills indicated 26% of Lake County adults have literacy skills at Level 1 or below. Many adults want to improve their reading and writing skills so they can access better jobs, further their own education, advocate for their children, and overall improve their way of life. Through hard work and perseverance, adult learners can change their own, and their family’s lives, for the better. Becoming a tutor can help someone to a better future.

CLEARLAKE, Calif. — For Clearlake residents living in the 2026 Robin Lane Sewer Spill area, Social Services may have programs to help temporarily pay for a hotel and/or repair your home.

You may be eligible if you are:

• aged 60+,
• a disabled dependent adult,
• an adult getting IHSS, or
• a family getting CalWORKs Cash Aid.

Social Services is actively reviewing our case records and attempting to contact In-Home Supportive Services, or IHSS, and CalWORKs recipients who live in the impacted area. Calls to seven identified IHSS recipients were made Wednesday. Calls to CalWORKs recipients started Thursday.

Don’t wait for Social Services to call you. Contact them now if you want to find out if they can help.

If you or a household member is aged 60+, a disabled dependent adult, or an adult getting IHSS, please call 707-995-4244 and tell them you need help with the HOME SAFE program.

If you or a household member gets CalWORKs Cash Aid, please contact your caseworker directly, or call our main line at 707-995-4200 and ask about the Family Stabilization Program and Housing Support Program.

Every household in the impacted area that contains someone aged 60 or older, a disabled dependent adult or an adult getting IHSS is urged to request HOME SAFE.  There are no income or property limits.

HOME SAFE may pay for repairs to make your home safe, it doesn’t require you to leave your home and stay in a hotel if you don’t want to. If eligible, HOME SAFE pays hotels and repair companies directly. You have earned this service, your tax dollars have paid for it, and the money spent helps to boost our local economy – it doesn’t just help you.
