Larsen: Helping students want to be their best

Imagine my surprise when on Friday morning my 9-year-old daughter shared the thing she was most looking forward to on this day of Halloween parades and parties.

She stated it was not the costume wearing, parades or parties. She shared it was a “Perfect Attendance” reward her class was to receive that day.

In the utmost detail, she described the delicious, nutritious and homemade meal she and her friends would share in the comfort of their classroom with Mrs. Facey.

She explained to me that not only were they getting this delicious meal, but that it was homemade by the cafeteria workers. She stated they make it with their own hands because they care.

She described the fruit platter, the salad and the homemade pizza that each student would eat together. It sounded like a meal I would want to eat!

Here’s what this young student so magnificently pointed out: At Kelseyville Elementary they care if she’s there or not, they care about her health, and they make her feel special, everyday!

Thank you to Enrico Frediani, Michelle Malm, the talented chefs and to our community for modeling how a caring school can make a student want to be their best.

Lunt: Thompson is running scared

On Friday, Oct. 8, our group caravaned down to Yountville to witness a debate between Congressman Mike Thompson and challenger, Loren Hanks. Thompson was a no-show and was represented by an empty chair.

In fairness, Thompson had not agreed to this debate; he had been branded a “no-show” by the Hanks group because he had avoided all debates except two, very late in the campaign. Hanks and the Libertarian, Mike Rodrigues, were exciting, articulate and humorous.

It had taken months for Hanks to get Thompson to agree to appear at two debates, both in very liberal territory. For ages Thompson has been relying on rigged telephone “town hall meetings” with no hard questions and no follow up. Back when he would personally appear, he responded with goofy answers. Example: Question – “What will you do about illegal immigration?” Answer: “We must make Mexico rich so they won’t want to come.”

When George Bush tried to repair Social Security, Thompson came here to speak in opposition. The Record-Bee requested a rebuttal to his positions. Thompson stood for a minute or so and said, “If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.” A woman then spoke. No questions for Thompson. How does one rebut that?

His only public debate with an audience was in Woodland on Wednesday, Oct. 20, at 7 p.m. at the Woodland Community Center and I was surprised that he didn’t dodge it.

Thompson is kept in office mostly by extreme liberals out on the coast and he knows where his political bread is buttered. After last census his district was expanded to include a block of super liberals down in Yolo – the idea being that he could safely vote as leftists pleased. Businessmen here would be horrified to learn they have supported a congressman who voted 98 percent with Pelosi.

But this time he is running scared. “Pelosi’s Puppet” signs are appearing in Thompson’s district, and Obama’s and Pelosi’s chickens are coming home to roost. Furthermore, Air Force Major Loren Hanks is a very credible challenger.

Ridgel: Republicans support Brooks

We, the members of the Republican Party of Lake County, endorse Karen Brooks for state Assembly.

Karen Brooks is a third-generation Californian who grew up in Southern California and eventually moved to Bayside, where she has worked and raised a family for the past 30 years.

As the former spokesperson for the Humboldt County Tea Party Patriots, she ensured the group's message and call for new, independent leadership in Washington, D.C. and Sacramento.

She is highly committed to her community with her involvement in the local Trails Trust of Humboldt Bay.

Her love of horses includes her 25-mile and 50-mile endurance horse competitions throughout the region.

She is a constant steward of her environment and understands the need to preserve the land and to be mindful of the footprint we leave on nature.

For more information and to view Karen's platform, “Vision 20/20” – which addresses environmental, educational, tax reform, budget and other issues, go to her Web site, www.karenbrooks2010.com.

Her bid for the Assembly seat in District 1 is against a career politician with a large reelection war chest at his disposal.

Vote for Karen Brooks on Nov. 2.
