Forest fire quickly contained

bartlettincidentlisaskeltonb

LAKE COUNTY, Calif. – A wildland fire above Lucerne inside the Mendocino National Forest shortly after 6 p.m. Monday was contained at two acres, Forest Service spokeswoman Tamara Schmidt said.

Initial reports indicated the exact location of the fire was in question but was determined by the Forest Service to be near the Lakeview Campground off High Valley Road between Clearlake Oaks and Nice within the forest boundary.

Shortly after the first firefighters staged, additional resources were cancelled as the fire was rapidly dealt with. Two water tenders were first called in but one was turned back almost immediately.

Helicopters picked up from Lucerne Harbor Park and flew over Lucerne to drop their loads on the fire for nearly an hour.

First responders reported to dispatch that the fire was reported to have a potential of 10 acres but was contained at two acres,

The US Forest Service, Cal Fire and other fire protection agencies responded, according to Schmidt.

The cause of the fire is currently under investigation, she said.

Stabbing suspect arrested

Jason Matthew Sabol, arrested Sunday August 4, 2013 for assault with a deadly weapon.

LAKEPORT, Calif. – Lake County Sheriff’s patrol deputies responded to Sutter Lakeside Hospital Sunday morning for a juvenile assault victim, which has resulted in one arrest.

Witnesses identified 19-year-old Jason Matthew Sabol of Lakeport as the suspect, according to Lt. Steve Brooks.

Witnesses reported that Sabol had walked up to the 16-year-old victim, called him a name and proceeded to assault the victim. Sabol was reportedly intoxicated at the time, Brooks said.

During the altercation Sabol and the alleged victim both fell to the ground and when victim stood up he said he had been stabbed, Brooks said. The victim was then transported to the hospital by friends, who were also at the party.

Early Sunday morning deputies responded to Sutter Lakeside Hospital for the reported assault victim. At the hospital they contacted the alleged victim, who was suffering from what appeared to be a puncture wound and a laceration to the chest, according to Brooks. The victim was unable provide any information as to who was responsible for causing the injuries.

Brooks said witnesses told deputies there was a party on Cow Mountain which was attended by a lot of people, some of whom were drinking alcoholic beverages and smoking marijuana.

Deputies contacted Sabol, who said he was at the party on Cow Mountain with his girlfriend. He noticed a male subject was instigating fights between some of the females who were attending the party, including his girlfriend, Brooks said.

Sabol explained he approached the subject and asked him to stop instigating the fights. Sabol said the subject punched him in the head, which knocked him down to the ground. Brooks said the subject then got on top of him and started to strike him repeatedly in the face.

Brooks said Sabol explained he had never been punched like that before and became scared for his life. Sabol said out of self-defense, he stabbed the subject twice in the chest.

Sabol was arrested for assault with a deadly weapon, transported to the Lake County Hill Road Correctional Facility and booked. Brooks said the stabbing victim was transported by air ambulance to a trauma center located out of the county.

At the time of the transport he was listed in critical condition, Brooks said.

LAKE COUNTY, Calif. – “Celtic Knot,” the 46th quilt block on the Lake County Quilt Trail, has been installed at Mountain Vista Middle School, 6885 Konocti Road in Kelseyville.

This quilt block was placed on the Mountain Vista Middle School gymnasium to honor the memory of Eva Scott, a beloved teacher and coach at the middle school.

The sponsor of “Celtic Knot” is Shannon Fontana, a 2013 graduate of Kelseyville High School.  Deb Ingalls, a Kelseyville High teacher, helped Fontana organize the sponsorship of the quilt block.

Fontana’s life was greatly influenced by Scott during her middle school years. In becoming close friends with Scott, Fontana learned that the Celtic knot was her favorite design.

Scott’s husband Randy and grandson Wyatt were able to join Fontana on the day of the installation of “Celtic Knot.”

The legacy of Eva Scott as a caring educator will be remembered by the stunning “Celtic Knot” design.

The GPS location of “Celtic Knot” is Latitude: 38.97, Longitude: -122.81.

The Lake County Quilt Trail is an agricultural and tourism project designed to promote community pride.

The 8-foot by 8-foot quilt block was drawn and painted by the Lake County Quilt Trail team, a group of dedicated quilters, graphic artists, painters, writers, carpenters and a videographer.

UPDATE: Lucerne fire destroys one home, damages a second; two dogs lost in blaze

LUCERNE, Calif. – A Lucerne family lost its home and some of its pets in a Sunday afternoon fire that also damaged a second residence.

The fire, reported at 2:49 p.m., occurred at 6260 Second Ave., at the corner of Country Club Drive, according to Northshore Fire Battalion Chief Jay Beristianos.

The structure that was destroyed was a mobile home with several additions, Beristianos said.

A second home nearby also caught fire but suffered relatively minor damage, he said.

Beristianos said the second home’s residents were away and had left a window open for ventilation, with the curtains catching fire.

A neighbor, Bruce Higgins, got into the home and pulled down the curtains, which Beristianos said saved the structure.

“If he had not been there we would have had a much different outcome,” Beristianos said of Higgins’ quick actions. “He stopped the fire inside the house, we stopped the outside.”

Dogs were trapped in the mobile home. While some of the pets were saved, Beristianos said two dogs died.

A few of the people attempting to save the dogs were out of breath but were not injured, Beristianos said.

Northshore Fire was assisted by Lakeport Fire in fighting the blaze, which Beristianos said was fully contained at 3:54 p.m.

The fire displaced eight adults and two children, he said.

Beristianos said the cause of the fire was under investigation.
