Pride foundation seeks vehicle donation for Safe House

LAKE COUNTY, Calif. – Lake Community Pride Foundation, a local nonprofit group, is in need of a car for its teen Safe House.

The foundation makes great efforts in the community to provide for the youth by supporting the performing arts of Lower Lake High School and offering shelter to teenagers who do not have the luxury of having a place to call home.

In addition, the organization is responsible for events such as the Power to the Youth and the Safe House Golf Tournament, all of which are events that support the youth.

The Safe House, a homeless teen shelter, currently is at capacity, housing five teenagers.

The shelter's counselors are ensuring the necessary atmosphere and life skills needed to help these teenagers succeed in school and to prepare for their future endeavors.

One recent resident of the Safe House wrote: “The first night that I stayed at the safe house I slept better than all of the 18 years with my parents; each night was as safe and warm as the next.”

Over the past five years, the Safe House has helped more than 50 young adults graduate from high school and move on to their future goals.

Many success stories have been written, proving that it is a beacon of light for those who may have been lost had the Safe House not been there.

Currently, the Safe House requires a vehicle in order to provide transportation to the young tenants for school functions, volunteer activities, job opportunities, grocery shopping and any emergency that may occur.

The Safe House is searching for a reliable vehicle that can used by the counselors of the Safe House.

If you are able to donate a vehicle, the donation will be tax-deductible, and the donor will receive the Honorary Citizen Award from Lake Community Pride Foundation for helping out the youth in Lake County.

If you are interested in donating a vehicle please contact Bill MacDougall at This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. .

CHP secures grant to encourage seat belt safety

In an effort to save lives and help improve vehicle occupant safety, the California Highway Patrol is implementing a yearlong statewide campaign to encourage seat belt and child safety seat usage.

“Seat belts save lives and reduce the risk of injury during a collision,” said CHP Commissioner Joe Farrow. “If you are ejected from a vehicle in a crash, there is a good chance you will not survive. Why take that risk?”

The CHP’s goal with the Vehicle Occupant Restraint Education and Instruction IV grant is to reduce the number of unrestrained passengers - of all ages - killed or injured in traffic collisions throughout California.

To achieve this goal by Sept. 30, 2015, the CHP will host educational seminars, classes and child safety seat inspections.

Seat belts and child passenger safety seats may be the one piece of equipment inside a vehicle that determines whether or not someone survives a collision.

Despite these lifesaving benefits and a law requiring all vehicle occupants in California to be safely restrained, hundreds of people are killed every year in collisions because they did not buckle up.

According to the Statewide Integrated Traffic Records System, 25 percent of the 1,679 vehicle occupants killed in collisions in 2012, which is the most recent year finalized data is available, were not properly restrained.

Funding for this program was provided by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

Fire destroys Middletown home

MIDDLETOWN, Calif. – A Sunday night fire destroyed a home in Middletown.

The fire burned a 1,000-square-foot residence located on Rancheria Road on the Middletown Rancheria, according to Cal Fire Battalion Chief Greg Bertelli.

Bertelli said South Lake County Fire and Cal Fire responded to the call, which came in at approximately 9:16 p.m.

“It was fully involved by the time we got there,” he said.

One person was inside the home when the fire broke out, but Bertelli said the man got out safely and was checked out by firefighters.

Both the home's occupant and his dog were judged to be OK and released at the scene, Bertelli said.

The home was a complete loss, according to Bertelli.

He said firefighters remained on scene for several hours, conducting mop up.

As for what started the fire, “We’re not sure right now,” said Bertelli. “We’re still eliminating causes.”

BOGGS MOUNTAIN, Calif. – A woman who was reported to have gotten lost while hiking on Boggs Mountain Sunday evening was found safe several hours later.

Bertelli said the Lake County Sheriff's Office later took the lead role on the incident, deploying Search and Rescue personnel in the search effort.

He said the woman was found safely at around 11:30 p.m., with sheriff's personnel walking her down the hill.

Both the woman and her dog were OK, Bertelli said.

Space News: Brilliant Leonids meteor shower peak occurs morning of Nov. 18

leonidmeteornasa

This year’s Leonids meteor shower peaks on the morning of Tuesday, Nov. 18.

If forecasters are correct, the shower should produce a mild but pretty sprinkling of meteors.

The waning crescent moon will not substantially interfere with viewing the Leonid shower.

“We’re predicting 10 to 15 meteors per hour,” said Bill Cooke of the Meteoroid Environment Office at NASA’s Marshall Space Flight Center. “For best viewing, wait until after midnight on Nov. 18, with the peak of the shower occurring just before sunrise.”

Cooke also recommends going to a location away from city lights, dressing warmly, and lie flat on your back and look straight up.

No special viewing equipment is needed – just your eyes.

Leonids are bits of debris from Comet Tempel-Tuttle.

Every 33 years the comet visits the inner solar system and leaves a stream of dusty debris in its wake.

Many of these streams have drifted across the November portion of Earth’s orbit.

Whenever our planet hits one, meteors appear to be flying out of the constellation Leo.

A live viewing opportunity is available via Ustream from a telescope at Marshall Space Flight Center.

The Ustream feed will be live beginning Monday, November 17 at 6:30 p.m. Central Standard Time at http://www.ustream.tv/channel/nasa-msfc and will continue until sunrise on Tuesday Nov. 18.
