UPPER LAKE, Calif. – As the full consolidation of Upper Lake's elementary and high school districts moves closer to being completed, the board of the new Upper Lake Unified School District – which ultimately will absorb the two older districts – is set to discuss making two school principal appointments.
The board will meet for a 4 p.m. closed session before the regular public session at 5 p.m. on Tuesday, March 8, in the library/student center at Upper Lake High School, 675 Clover Valley Road.
Documents and background information for agenda items are available to the public at http://www.boarddocs.com/ca/ulusd/Board.nsf/Public .
Two key items on the agenda are the proposed hirings of the middle school and high school principal jobs.
Don Boyd, who now serves as assistant superintendent of the Upper Lake Union High School District, is proposed as the principal of Upper Lake Middle School.
Sandy Coatney, currently Upper Lake High's vice principal and dean of students, is proposed to be the new principal of the high school – a job that Patrick Iaccino has held concurrently with that district's superintendent's job.
If approved, both hirings would take effect July 1, the day after the separate elementary and high school districts formally dissolve and the unification becomes final.
In other business, the board will consider accepting an organization chart that will establish the new district's management and directors.
The board also will receive reports from Business Manager Sue Milhaupt and Iaccino, who continue to fulfill their jobs in the Upper Lake Union High School District while working for the new district.

CLEARLAKE, Calif. – Police arrested an Oregon man on Saturday for attempting to pass a counterfeit $100 bill at a city grocery store.
Christopher Alexander Hedge, 25, of Klamath Falls was taken into custody on Saturday afternoon, according to a report from Sgt. Rodd Joseph of the Clearlake Police Department.
Shortly after 3 p.m. Saturday police were dispatched to Ray's Food Place, located at 15930 Dam Road, on a report of a male subject who had attempted to pass a counterfeit $100 bill, Joseph said.
Joseph said Officer Travis Parson arrived at the store and was notified by employees that the subject had just left on foot. He was described as a white male wearing a blue jacket and camouflage pants.
Officer Parson observed a subject matching this description walking westbound on Old Highway 53 after crossing Highway 53, Joseph said.
Parson contacted the subject, who Joseph said was identified as Hedge, on Old Highway 53 near the intersection with Cache Creek Way.
Hedge admitted to using the counterfeit $100 bill to make a purchase, saying he suspected the bill to be counterfeit. Joseph said Hedge’s statements were not consistent as to where he had obtained the counterfeit currency from.
Joseph said Parson arrested Hedge and transported him to the police department for processing.
During the investigation Joseph said Parson learned that Hedge had successfully passed another counterfeit $100 bill at Ray's Food Place a couple of hours earlier in the day on Saturday.
Hedge, whose occupation is listed as a cashier, was booked into the Lake County Jail on Saturday night on felony charges of second-degree burglary and possession of a forged note, with bail set at $15,000, according to jail records. He remained in custody on Sunday.
Joseph said the case also will be forwarded for followup to the United States Secret Service, which has federal jurisdiction on counterfeit US currency investigations.
Anyone with information about this case is asked to contact Parson at 707-994-8251, Extension 507.

CLEARLAKE, Calif. – A Northshore man was arrested Saturday in connection to a vehicle crash that injured a woman.
Joseph Raymond Pimentel, 25, of Nice was arrested on several charges in connection to the wreck, which occurred early Saturday afternoon, according to Sgt. Rodd Joseph of the Clearlake Police Department.
Joseph said that at about 1:20 p.m. Saturday Clearlake Police officers responded to a report of a two-vehicle traffic collision with injuries on 19th Avenue near Boyles Avenue.
When officers arrived, one vehicle – a silver Nissan Altima – was found blocking the roadway and the other vehicle, a silver Dodge Ram 2500, was found in the front yard of a residence at this intersection, Joseph said.
Lake County Fire Protection District personnel arrived on scene and began treating the adult female driver in the Altima, according to Joseph.
Joseph said several witnesses identified Pimentel as the driver of the Dodge truck. Pimentel was on scene, however, he initially denied being a driver.
Witnesses claimed that after the collision, Pimentel fled from the Dodge truck on foot. Joseph said Pimentel was captured by witnesses and a brief struggle occurred, during which Pimentel sustained several facial injuries.
Pimentel was escorted back to the scene of the collision where he was contacted by officers, Joseph said.
Joseph said Pimentel was exhibiting symptoms of intoxication and ultimately was arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol.
The other driver suffered internal injuries and a broken arm. She was transported by ambulance to St. Helena Hospital Clear Lake for medical treatment and has since been released, Joseph said.
Joseph said both vehicles were towed from the scene.
After Pimentel’s arrest, he was transported to St. Helena Hospital Clear Lake by police for medical clearance. While at the hospital, officers collected evidence from Pimentel showing his blood alcohol content to be more than the legal limit of 0.08 percent, Joseph said.
Once he was medically cleared, Pimentel was transported and booked into the Lake County Jail on felony counts of driving under the influence of alcohol causing great bodily injury and driving under the influence of alcohol over a 0.08 percent blood alcohol content causing great bodily injury, and a misdemeanor count of driving without a license, Joseph said.
He was booked with bail set at $30,000. Jail records indicated he later posted the required portion of bail and was released.
Anyone with information on this collision is asked to contact Officer Mark Harden at 707-994-8251, Extension 503.

CLEARLAKE, Calif. – A Clearlake woman was arrested last week for stabbing her boyfriend several times while he was fighting her with adult son.
Embree Ternise Vance, 40, was arrested for attempted murder and felony domestic violence in the case, according to Sgt. Rodd Joseph of the Clearlake Police Department.
At about 9:45 p.m. March 3 Clearlake Police Officers responded to a report of a stabbing victim at St. Helena Hospital Clear Lake, Joseph said.
Joseph said the 58-year-old male victim, a Clearlake resident whose name has been withheld, was suffering several stab wounds to his abdomen and was later flown to Santa Rosa Memorial Hospital.
During the officers’ initial contact with the victim, who Joseph said was intoxicated, it was learned that he was stabbed by his girlfriend – identified as Embree Vance – during a physical altercation between the victim and the suspect’s adult son.
After interviewing the victim, officers responded to the scene of the stabbing, the home the couple shared in the 16500 block of Dam Road, Joseph said.
As officers were arriving at the residence, Sgt. Travis Lenz located a male and female subject walking in the road nearby. Joseph said both subjects appeared intoxicated.
Upon contact, the woman was identified as Embree Vance, and the male with her was identified as 18-year-old Shandoah Vance, her son. Both were very intoxicated, Joseph said.
Joseph said Embree Vance admitted to stabbing her boyfriend during a physical altercation he was in with her son Shandoah. Police found her to still be in possession of the knife. Both Embree Vance and her son appeared to be uninjured.
The mother and son were arrested and transported to the Lake County Jail, where she was booked on the attempted murder and domestic violence charges, with her bail set at $200,000, according to jail records. She remained in custody on Sunday.
Shandoah Vance was arrested for public intoxication, with bail set at $1,000, based on his booking sheet. Jail records indicated he later posted the required portion of bail and was released.
Joseph said the case has been submitted to the Lake County District Attorney’s Office for filing.
The victim was last reported to be in stable condition, Joseph said.
Anyone with information on this case is asked to contact investigating officer Leo Flores at 707-994-8251, Extension 542.
LAKE COUNTY, Calif. – Forecasters' predictions of a significant Saturday storm held true, dumping multiple inches of rain on Lake County, which increased creek levels and the lake depth.
More rain is in the forecast, but early Sunday a flash flood warning for southern Lake County – particularly the Rocky, Jerusalem and Valley fire areas – ended, with a general flood warning for the rest of the county set to expire at 6 a.m. Sunday.
The National Weather Service's 24-hour rainfall totals for the period ending at 2 a.m. Sunday showed that an estimated 4 inches of rain fell on Boggs Mountain, while just over 3 inches was recorded at the High Glade Lookout above Upper Lake, 1.35 inches at Lakeport, 1.21 inches at Lower Lake and 2.24 inches in Kelseyville.
The Saturday storm also brought heavy winds, which caused a large oak tree to fall across a vacation home on Mulberry Street in Loch Lomond, according to radio reports.
Along Highway 29 Saturday night there were reports of gusting crosswinds and, in the Glasgow Grade area near Lower Lake, small mudslides were intruding into the roadway.
A fallen tree led to an overnight road closure on Seigler Springs and Red Hill roads, and Bell Hill Road at Adobe Creek Drive was closed due to roadway flooding, according to the California Highway Patrol.
The storm conditions on Saturday also led to numerous small power outages in Cobb, Finley, Lakeport and Kelseyville, with most resolved by early evening, according to Pacific Gas and Electric Co.
Clear Lake's level increased to 5.21 feet Rumsey early Sunday, the highest level since May 2013, and the US Geological Survey gauges on several south county creeks showed rapidly increasing flow levels due to the amount of rain that fell Saturday.
The National Weather Service is calling for more potentially heavy rainfall on Sunday, along with chances of a thunderstorm, and winds with gusts into the mid 20s.
Rain is forecast again on Monday, with a break on Tuesday before rain returns that night and continues into next weekend.
