LAKEPORT, Calif. – Lake County’s own community orchestra has been entertaining music-lovers since 1978.
On Saturday, Oct. 15, the Lake County Library’s monthly free lecture series “Know Lake County” will highlight the Lake County Symphony Association, or LCSA, and the Lake County Youth Orchestra.
The program will be held at the Lakeport branch of Lake County Library at 1425 N. High St. from 2 to 4 p.m.
Greg Bushta, second vice president of the LCSA and a violinist with the orchestra, will talk about the symphony association and the orchestra.
Youth orchestra director Susan Condit will introduce Rafael Contreras, concertmaster of the youth orchestra to talk about the youth orchestra.
The lecture will include a video performance of the youth orchestra.
Condit is a violinist with the Lake County Symphony and teaches a 4/5 combination class, a music class and a violin class at the Konocti Education Center, a visual and performing arts magnet school for grades four through eight in the Konocti Unified School District.
Contreras is an eighth-grade student at the Konocti Education Center. He has been playing fiddle and violin since he was a small child and has won numerous fiddle contests.
The Lake County Symphony is a community orchestra composed of both professional and amateur musicians. Each year the orchestra presents a classical concert in November, a holiday concert in December and a pops concert in May.

The youth orchestra performs at each Lake County Symphony concert and presents its own annual concert in June. The Web site for the symphony association is www.clearlakeperformingarts.com .
The Know Lake County lectures feature speakers from a wide array of organizations and disciplines, each representing some aspect of Lake County.

LUCERNE, Calif. – The first lecture in this fall's “Distinguished Speaker Series” – focusing on Lake County's agricultural history – took place last week at Marymount California University.
Historian and Lake County Museums Curator Tony Pierucci spoke on the topic of “Pastures, Pears and Protests: One Hundred Years of Lake County Farming and Labor,” on Thursday, Oct. 6, at Marymount California University's Lakeside Campus in Lucerne.

The fall Distinguished Speaker Series, the theme of which is “Grape to Glass: The Past, Present and Future of Agriculture in Lake County,” has upcoming lectures planned in November and December.
The program on Nov. 3 will be a panel discussion about sustainable practices in viticulture and vineyard management featuring Christian Ahlmann, vice president of Six Sigma Ranch and Winery; Tracey Hawkins, owner and winemaker for Hawk and Horse Vineyards; and Paul Zellman, director of educational programs for the Lake County Winegrape Commission.
The 2016 series' final program on Dec. 1 will be a presentation by Robert Bath, MS, CHE, professor of Wine and Beverage Studies at the Culinary Institute of America, Napa Valley, and member of the Court of Master Sommeliers, who will feature local sources of food products paired with Lake County wines.

LAKEPORT, Calif. – The Lakeport Planning Commission will consider three different projects when it meets this week.
The commission will meet beginning at 5 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 12, in the council chambers at Lakeport City Hall, 225 Park St.
On the agenda is the continuation of a discussion from Aug. 10 on the architectural and design review for the Westlake Auto project at 2195 S. Main St.
The commission's approval would legalize an existing 1,080-square-foot detached garage/shop to a property with an existing auto sales/retail facilities.
Commissioners also will discuss Jamie Young Child Care's application for a use permit for a large family daycare facility in an existing single family dwelling at 1097 North Tunis St.
Also on Wednesday's agenda is Donald and Mary Einarsson's application for a minor architectural and design review for a new two-story single family dwelling located in the Victorian Village Subdivision, located at 2024 Hampton Park.
In other business, city planning staff will give the commission an update on projects pending planning department approval as of Oct. 3.

LAKEPORT, Calif. – The Lakeport Economic Development Advisory Committee will meet this week to discuss project updates and membership recruitment.
The meeting will take place from 7:30 to 9 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 12, at Lakeport City Hall, 225 Park St.
The group will hear project updates on the second and final phase of the Downtown Improvement Project, the Lakefront Revitalization Plan, the Carnegie Library and the hotel feasibility study, along with other public works projects.
Lakeport City Manager Margaret Silveira will give the group an update on Measure Z, a one-cent sales tax measure on the November ballot. The measure is expected to raise $1.5 million annually to go toward police and public safety, roads, parks, business enhancement and youth programs.
Also on the agenda is a discussion of the Lakeport Economic Strategic Plan.
LEDAC also will discuss recruitment of new members, with two vacancies on the committee.
LEDAC advocates for a strong and positive Lakeport business community and acts as a conduit between the city and the community for communicating the goals, activities and progress of Lakeport’s economic and business programs.
It is chaired by Wilda Shock, with the membership including Vice Chair Christine Hutt, Secretary Rebecca Southwick, and members Bill Eaton, Melissa Fulton, Pam Harpster, George Linn, Taira St. John and Panette Talia.
Lakeport City Community Development Director Kevin Ingram and City Manager Margaret Silveira serve as ex-officio committee members.
The next meeting is Dec. 14.

MIDDLETOWN, Calif. – The Acme Foundation thanks all those who donated, volunteered and participated at its 18th Anniversary Celebration of Caring, which took place on Sept. 18, at the Twin Pine Casino and Hotel Event Center in Middletown.
Last year’s event was scheduled for Sept. 13, but due to the Valley fire for the first time the annual “Celebration of Caring” had to be canceled.
The delicious champagne lunch was prepared and served by Twin Pine staff and exceptional service was provided by Twin Pine staff members, Rebecca Henry and Sheryl Bielenberg.
The organization extended thanks to John Zimmerman and wife, Karen for the wide array of wonderful live music they provided.
Jon and Pat Meyers, the Acme Foundation's founders, said the event could not have happened without the help and enthusiasm from Acme volunteers Yvonne Scott from Clearlake Veterinary Clinic, Liz Daugherty, Nancy Oliver, Cathy Wilson, Dennis Gilson, Kristin Speed and volunteers, Jan and Paul Woycheshin from San Leandro.
Pat Meyer’s sister, Ann Aldridge, spent months behind the scenes from her Bay Area home requesting most of the more than 130 auction and raffle items from throughout the United States for the fundraiser which included gift certificates to the San Francisco Ballet, Sonoma Raceway, Atlantis Casino Resort, Aquarius Casino Resort, Disneyland, Sol Rouge Vineyard and Winery, Oregon Shakespeare Festival, home decorator and kitchen items, pet items, jewelry and much much more.
The Meyers also offered gratitude to Lake County auction item contributors including Gregory Graham Wines, Langtry Estate and Vineyard, Kathee Toy Massage, Fultz Winery, Kaz Winery, Smiling Dogs Winery, Twin Pine Casino, Quilts by Jacque Spiker, 2 Women Traders, Carolyn Graham, The Bunk House, Star Gardens, Hardester’s Markets, Clearlake Veterinary Clinic, Photos by KmZ, art by Gene Thompson, and art and books donated by Helen Whitney.
They also thanked friends of The Acme Foundation from outside Lake County, Margaret and Rhys Truman, Bobbi and Freddy Mallace, and artist, Christofer Aven for their auction donations and continued support.
Vendors Joyce Blohm, Phyllis Kelsey, Susan Byrnes and Kristin Speed added variety to the event with their unique creative items that were for sale.
Congratulations to Gary Wilson of Berkeley for winning the Disney raffle which included four tickets to Disneyland and the Disney California Adventure.
One hundred percent of all net proceeds from Acme Foundation events are used to provide grants to Lake County’s low income seniors and the disabled to help with the expenses incurred for the treatment of their seriously ill cats and dogs.

LAKE COUNTY, Calif. – More than six million young people across the country observed National 4-H Week, an annual celebration of 4-H during the first full week of October.
This week provides opportunity to showcase the great things that 4-H offers young people and highlights the incredible 4-H youth in the community who work each day to make a positive impact on the community.
The organization is certainly alive and well in Lake County where nine clubs thrive.
The 4-H youth volunteer at the Lake County Fair, Grilling on the Green, People Services Chicken Q, Veteran's Day Celebration, Pear Festival, Wreaths Across America and more.
The organization emphasizes the importance of young people connecting to their communities; being well-informed and engaged in civic affairs; developing leadership skills; and preparing for college, work, career and life.
