More rain, high winds in forecast; break in the weather expected later this week

010917scottsvalleyclosed

LAKE COUNTY, Calif. – After several days of heavy rain in Lake County, still more is in the forecast for the area on Tuesday along with high winds, with a break in the wet weather expected later this week.

Lake County remains under a flood warning through 9 p.m. Wednesday, with the National Weather Service also issuing a high wind warning in effect through Tuesday night for southerly winds with gusts of 50 miles per hour or more.

More rain – sometimes heavy – is expected on Tuesday, with rain also forecast on Wednesday before conditions are expected to clear into the weekend.

Monday's rainfall totals around Lake County were about half of what was reported on Sunday.

For the 24-hour period ending at 1:30 a.m. Tuesday, the National Weather Service's observation stations reported the following rainfall totals, in inches.

– Bear Canyon (Middletown): 2.54.
– Boggs Mountain: 1.54.
– Cache Creek (near Lower Lake): 0.47.
– Cobb: 1.75.
– Hidden Valley Lake: 1.22.
– High Glade Lookout (above Upper Lake): 0.94.
– Indian Valley Reservoir:  0.57.
– Jerusalem Grade (Middletown): 1.61.
– Kelseyville: 1.06.
– Putah Creek (Middletown): 2.27.
– Upper Lake: 0.90.
– Whispering Pines: 2.48.

The heavy rainfall has led to flooding on some area roadways. The Lake County Public Works Department said Seigler Canyon Road remained closed Highway 29 to Big Canyon Road due to flooding, with Perini Road closed at Seigler Canyon Road and Scotts Valley Road closed from Hendricks Road to Highway 20 due to flooding.

Clear Lake's depth also has risen by nearly 2 feet thanks to the weekend storms. By the end of the day Monday, the lake had reached about 5.50 feet Rumsey, nearly three times its depth on the same date in 2016, when it was 1.97 feet Rumsey, and well above its Jan. 9 average of 3.23 feet Rumsey, according to the Lake County Department of Water Resources.

Flow levels also were high in Cache Creek, which was so full that – despite the dam being open – the creek was running backwards into Clear Lake on Monday.

The records for the US Geological Survey's stream gauge on Cache Creek at Lower Lake showed that discharge on the Cache Creek Dam peaked over the weekend, jumping from less than 10 cubic feet per second to more than 1,000 cubic feet per second from 6 to 7:45 a.m. Sunday.

By 10:45 a.m. Sunday, Cache Creek's discharge from the recent round of storms peaked, discharging at 3,300 cubic feet per second, short by about 300 cubic feet of the maximum discharge for this time of year, recorded in 1965.

The dam's discharge was down to about 1,000 cubic feet per second early Tuesday, according to US Geological Survey records.

Cal Fire assists in winter storm response

010717calfirerescue2

LAKE COUNTY, Calif. – Cal Fire personnel have been a part of the effort to respond to the winter storms here in Lake County and in other parts of the state.

While responding to wildland fires is the department’s primary mission, its firefighters and inmate fire crews provide a valuable resource to local governments and the public during times such as the current winter storm and flood response.

The  Cal Fire Sonoma Lake Napa Unit utilizes its winter staff to prepare and respond to local storm-related emergencies.

In fact, the agency reported that more than 60 calls for service were met by Cal Fire personnel over this past weekend alone.

In addition to their regular service areas, Cal Fire responds to any local jurisdiction that requests help through the local Office of Emergency Services.

Cal Fire regularly responds to calls for wildland fires, medical aids, vehicle accidents and structure fires.

The recent storm added calls that ranged from hazardous trees in roadways to stranded residents in Hidden Valley Lake, where Cal Fire and South Lake Fire District’s water rescue trained personnel, in coordination with the Lake County Sheriff’s Office, performed evacuations to deliver residents to safe locations.

On standby during storms are Cal Fire’s inmate fire crews, an excellent workforce when communities face imminent flooding and a large quantity of sandbags must be moved quickly.

Two fifteen person crews were prepositioned in Sonoma County to assist if needed and two crews also provided sandbag work on Grizzly Island in Solano County Friday.

Cal Fire's Boggs Mountain helicopter in Cobb is available to perform search and rescue operations for storm victims when requested as well.

When local emergency operations centers are activated, Cal Fire staff participate remotely and in person to streamline communication and expedite needed responses.

Unit Chief Shana Jones assured the public that Cal Fire personnel will continue to be available as needs arise, and urges everyone to remain safe and use extreme caution when driving in any area where emergency responders are working on incidents.

American Life in Poetry: Love Poem

tedkooserbarn

I'm fond of poems in which we see people working together, helping one another. I've never folded a sail, nor seen anybody fold one, but here I get to watch it happen, and feel it happen, too.

Alan Feldman is from Massachusetts and his most recent book is “Immortality” (University of Wisconsin Press, 2015).

Love Poem

The sail is so vast when it's laid out on the driveway.
I stake it with a screwdriver through the shackle
at the tack to stretch it smooth,
pulling on the head and clew. Now it's smooth
as a night's worth of new snow.
My wife, my partner, has been torn from her busy day.
We face each other across the sail's foot
and with my right hand and her left hand
(I'm right handed, she's left handed)
we pull an arm's length of the sail
down over itself, then do this again,
keeping my left hand, and her right hand, towards the foot.
Each fold is easier since the sail grows narrower
near the top. Then we fold towards each other
and I wrap my arms around it, while she holds the bag's mouth open,
the gray bag that will cover it through the winter.
Then I thank her. And the driveway is visible again
as it is in spring, when all the snow has melted.
