REGIONAL: Humboldt County Sheriff’s deputies get bear out of locked vehicle

NORTH COAST, Calif. – On Monday a black bear that became locked in a car was rescued thanks to the ingenuity of Humboldt County Sheriff’s deputies.

Lt. Mike Fridley of the Humboldt County Sheriff’s Office reported that he and two other deputies responded to a residence on Greenwood Heights for a call of a bear locked in a vehicle.

Once on scene, Corp. Borges, Deputy Crotty and Lt. Fridley found a gray-faced adult black bear locked in a car, just as reported.

Fridley said the bear was very aggressive and snapped at the window anytime someone would get close to the vehicle.

With the help of owner the vehicle was unlocked. Fridley said the deputies then tied a length of rope to the door handle, wrapped it around a tree and fed it back to a patrol vehicle.

From a safe distance the rope was pulled, which opened the door and allowed the bear to exit the vehicle, Fridley said.

Fridley said the bear was unharmed and was last seen running into the brush.

It is unknown how the bear was able to get into the vehicle in the first place, Fridley said.
