Unitarians plan Dec. 21 Christmas service

KELSEYVILLE, Calif. – The Christmas service at the Unitarian Universalist Community of Lake County will be presented by the Rev. Doctor Carrie Knowles.

The service, on Sunday, Dec. 21, begins at 11 a.m. at the church, located at the corner of First and Main streets in Kelseyville. All are welcome.

“Choose Something Like a Star,” is the title of the sermon.

“Not by chance, the year’s longest night that marks the Winter Solstice is folded into the story of Jesus’ birth and the challenge of the stars,” Rev. Knowles said. “The Solstice marks a time to acknowledge our burdens, yet let them fall away. The bells of Christmas invite us to new joys and hopes for peace.”

Christmas music, including a hymn sung by the choir, will be featured during the service.

Knowles was ordained last year. Her call to ministry followed a long career in psychology – including a private practice in Lake County for 25 years – and later in law.

She has served as chaplain to veterans on the board of the Interfaith Center at the Presidio. Recently she has been elected to the Interfaith Council of Contra Costa County where she will again conduct outreach to veterans.

Her poetry has been featured at gatherings sponsored by the Interfaith Council of Rossmoor. She writes plays and short stories, and she is at work on a book about “living longer.”
