United Christian Parish plans Holy Week events

LAKEPORT, Calif. – United Christian Parish will host a number of services, celebrations and concerts for the whole community during Holy Week, which begins on Palm Sunday, April 17, and ends with Easter on Sunday, April 24.

Palm Sunday: April 17

The church will host a contemporary service at 9 a.m., with Sunday school at 10 a.m. and a traditional service at 11 a.m.

Sing the hosannas, wave the palms, and join the church for a celebration of Jesus’ triumphant entry into Jerusalem. Come learn what the Jews of Jesus' day expected of the Messiah following the parade, versus what he really offered and what it means for Christians if they will listen for his voice today.

The church also will host its spring concert at 5 p.m. April 17.

When Jesus entered Jerusalem the Pharisees told him to keep his disciples quiet. Jesus responded by saying that if they were quiet, even the rocks would cry out. Through a variety of instruments and voices come hear what all the praise is about.

There will be music featuring the praise band Wing & A Prayer, Belles With Bells English Hand Bell Ensemble, the Chancel Choir and a special Women’s Chorus.

Passover: Tuesday, April 19

Why is this night different from any other?

Ever since Moses led the Israelites out Egypt God’s faithful have observed this day as different from all the others. Why? And is it only a Jewish holiday or is there special meaning for Christians as well?

Join the congregation in the sanctuary at 7 p.m. as a missionary from Jews for Jesus shares the meaning and symbolism behind the Passover Seder for Christians.

Good Friday: April 22

Join seven local churches at New Life Four Square Church for the 21st annual ecumenical Good Friday Service. New Life is located at 1125 Martin St., Lakeport. The service will be at noon.

At 5:30 p.m., United Christian Parish will host its “tenebrae” service.

The word “tenebrae” is Latin for shadows. The purpose of the tenebrae service is to recreate the emotional aspects of the passion story: the betrayal, abandonment and agony of what we now call “Good Friday.” This is easily one of the most hauntingly beautiful and compelling services of the church year.

Easter Sunday: April 24

Join the congregation at the gazebo in Lakeport’s Library Park at 6:30 a.m.

The gospel of Luke tells us that women went to the tomb “very early in the morning” that first Easter Sunday. They discovered a miracle, as did the disciples on the road to Emmaus.

Come and be a part of the miracle early this Easter morning as the church gathers at the gazebo of Library Park to witness the rising of the Son. All will be invited to a free breakfast after the celebration.

At 10 a.m. experience the miracle of Easter at the church's celebration.

John and the other gospels tell stories of Jesus restoring to life persons who had died. In each case, the one who died lived again, but still faced death. The resurrection celebrated at Easter is testimony to Jesus the Christ – who died, was raised, and will not die again.

United Christian Parish is located at 745 N. Brush St., in Lakeport.
